About Jonathan
I have studied with Wanchi Huang at James Madison University for six years. At JMU, I earned a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music, both in violin performance. I received my D.M.A. at Catholic University of America, studying with Jody Gatwood. When I was a student at JMU, I taught several students privately. The students ranged from retirees to JMU faculty and students to adolescents. I am now teaching at Baltimore Talent Education Center, where I teach violin in small groups and individual lessons. The students at BTEC range from pre- kindergarden through high school. I also have festival experience. I have been a student at Brevard Music Center, Heifetz International Music Institute, BayView Music Festival, and I was a Teaching Fellow at Interlochen Arts Camp. Through my experiences both as a student and as a teacher, I un
derstand that every student is a little bit different. Every student has different strengths and weaknesses. Every student has a different learning style. Every student has a different way of understanding things, a different way of processing information, and a different personality all together. It will be my job as a teacher to get to know each student individually and use my teaching methods to teach the student how to play the violin and help him or her to reach his or her goals.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid-back person. I am easy-going, enthusiastic about violin playing and about teaching and learning music, and I am very patient with my students as well. However, I am also very demanding. I explain and demonstrate objectives in a very precise way, and I demand a lot of detailed work from my students, inside and outside the lesson. I explain specifically what I want the student to do. By the end of every lesson, the student will have specific things to work on for next time. I expect each student to make practicing a habit, and practice regularly what has been discussed in the lesson. I try to make the lessons as pleasant and as laid-back as possible. But I become more firm, serious, and strict when a student either is not making an effort or does not practice enough outside the lesson.
I start students off with the Suzuki method. We work on techniques to hold the violin properly, hold the bow properly, and get a decent sound out of the violin, without too much physical tension. A student begins by learning to play by ear. After he or she is comfortable playing by ear, we associate the notes that the student hears and plays on the violin with written notes on a page.
We also work with the Paul Roland methods so that the student can learn the violin in a basic, rudimentary way. It involves a lot of repetitive patterns, back and forth motions that are slow and round, and avoiding excessive tension. This will give the student the tools that he or she needs to learn how to play the violin in a short period of time.
In three to six months, a student who is a beginner will be able to hold the violin and bow comfortably, create a decent sound on the violin, and play the Twinkle Variations, and maybe a few other songs.
If the student has played violin before, then in three to six months, he or she will have had some rehabilitation to get rid of tension and force, overcome some bad habits he or she may have developed, and review the fundamentals of violin playing. I will improve the student's approach to the violin, and by the end of the three to six months, he or she will have a better idea on how to practice and play the violin.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide a stand.
I will expect the student to have a violin, rosin, and a pencil.

*** Specialties ***
Suzuki Method- a starting point, particularly for kids, but for people of all ages. It is a good way to begin learning the violin by playing by ear, developing a strong, clear tone, and bringing out one's individuality through his/her musical development and his/her ability to be expressive.

In a matter of time, I want the student to get used to reading music, in addition to playing by ear. This can be done through the pieces in the Suzuki method or through other music.

Eventually, I take the student off of the Suzuki method and work with him or her on classical repertoire.

I recently start to learn Violin with Jonathan and learn a lot more than what I was expected! I was a little bit disappointed because I heard it's late to start violin in my age but since I start with Jonathan, he always been helpful and encourage me.

He's very knowledgeable and perfectly patient. He has the ability to listen and understand where I am in my learning curve and adjust his lessons to my skill level which I love about him.
Not only he knows his stuff and makes his teaching personal to your needs, but he also has a way to make you feel successful even when you are struggling. I always feel better about my playing when I leave his class.
What I like about his teaching style most; he hands you a key to learning more rapidly. I think this is the best kind of teach that you can find.

For these reasons I highly recommend him and I truly appreciate his time, patient, and knowledge.

I wish one day come to I play like him; clean, easy and professional :-) !

I’ve been delighted with my lessons with Semyon from day one. I had studied classical piano as a child but took a hiatus of several decades, and was somewhat nervous about starting up again. Semyon has put me at ease, and is so enthusiastic and encouraging, it’s contagious. He also has a focus on technique that I was looking for (scales and Hanon so far, which I know I need!). He knows his stuff but doesn’t overwhelm me with too much too soon. As an adult student, I couldn’t be more pleased with my choice and highly recommend him.

As a retiree who has recently returned to piano after a decades-long hiatus, I knew I’d need a teacher with experience teaching adults. Semyon is proving to be excellent. He is a skilled musician and teacher whose approach combines enjoyable piano pieces, exercises for agility and the fundamentals of scales and theory. He is patient and responsive to what I want to accomplish. I have learned in each lesson, seen improvement each week, and enjoy the diversity of assignments. In short, i’m having a grand time and highly recommend him.

I began playing at 4 years old. I loved classical music and taught myself by listening till I was 6 and started formal lessons. I continued lessons throughout high school with a Julliard graduate. During my senior year of high school, I had the amazing experience of playing in Weill Hall, located in the famous Carnege Hall, as part of the young artist showcase.
While attending Vassar College, I continued to take private lessons with another Julliard graduate, as well as taking classes in theory.
I also just finished my second B.A in music from George Mason.

About Alexandra
Hello! My name is Alex Rhoads and I have been teaching piano and guitar for over 12 years. I graduated from George Mason University with a Master's in Education, and have taught special education in the classroom for 5 years. I recently made the decision to pursue my passion--music--as a full time profession.

In addition to teaching, I play both solo and with a band at many local festivals, restaurants and coffeehouses, and am a regular musician at my church. I am an award winning songwriter and recording artist and have released two original albums in 2007 and 2016, one of which can be found on iTunes.

My lessons combine theory concepts with a variety of music genres such as rock, pop, and classical that will make your child want to practice. My main goal in teaching is to share my love of music with students and inspire them t
o be as excited about music as I am.

I am currently taking beginner and intermediate students ages 5-18 for piano and 7-18 for guitar. I look forward to getting to know you and your child and beginning our musical journey together!

I also have an extensive professional and personal background in meditation (10 years), astrology (5 years) and healing (particularly Reiki, 4 years). I am very interested in the intersection between a healing/mindfulness-awareness approach and singing/playing piano.

I read previous reviews which assisted me in selecting Jen. After connecting with her I realized she had the perfect location (less than 10 mins from my house in Catonsville) and professional patience with my twin 14 yr old sons. They had a little experience before the lessons with Jen, but after only a few lessons, their piano/keyboard playing was much sharper than before. She has a beautiful voice and the boys always felt really positive after each lesson. They were more eager to practice at home to demonstrate the skills she taught them previously. Also, Jen hand writes lessons for the boys, which helped them better understand sheet music. She's a Gem. Well worth the investment!

Jennifer teaches my 6 yr old daughter piano lessons. Jennifer is very knowledgeable. She is very patient with my daughter and helps her learn by visualizing the keys and their notes as well as giving her visual notes in a notebook that she can take home to work on. I recommend Jennifer as a knowledgeable and courteous teacher.

I can't say enough good things about Earl's instruction. He's extremely knowledgeable and talented and yet responsive, inspiring, and kind. Rather than applying a narrow and rigid approach to teaching, lessons are built around my abilities and interests and he has taught me new ways of looking at music and playing guitar. I feel very fortunate to be one of his students.
