Playing a brass instrument is a physically demanding, high concentration activity that can lead to immense joy and fulfillment when approached correctly. I offer all my students practical and musical ways to master the tuba that will lead to life long enjoyment. I will equip you with fundamentals for healthy practicing and can offer lessons in several styles, including jazz, classical, and salsa. Additionally, I have helped students prepare for school, district, and regional auditions.
MUSIC LESSONS: Whether I am playing salsa, solo classical piano, in a jazz ensemble, or a concert band, I am ALWAYS having fun doing what I love, and I want you to have the same experience. After moving to Philadelphia ten years ago to study at Temple University, where I received my Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance, I have had many great opportunities to play all types of music with all types of people. While my passions are in jazz music, composing, and arranging, my varied experience helps me pass on the fundamentals necessary to becoming a great musician while also adapting to your goals, needs, and musical preferences.
*** Lesson Details *** I aim for students to leave each lesson eager to practice and explore, and to come back with questions and stories of their progress. To that end, I work hard to tailor lessons to every
individuals interests and goals. Sometimes this means arranging, transcribing a recording, or even composing something new for my students. Additionally, in each lesson, I balance technical skills, ear training, and music theory to assure that each student walks away a complete musician, all structured around your musical goals.
*** Travel Equipment *** The student must provide their own instrument and assigned method books. I will provide a music stand if necessary, and other useful instructional tools (metronome, tuner, etc.)
*** Home Studio *** I offer lessons in my home located within walking distance of Broad Street in South Philadelphia, near the Tasker-Morris subway stop. I am equipped with a well-playing upright piano and plenty of space for musical activities. There is ample street parking in the area during the afternoon and early evening, and our living room is available to parents while students take their lesson. Students who travel to me for lessons gain all the benefits of performing on a piano, rather than an electric keyboard, and have access to many more resources that I am able to offer from my home, such as recordings and method books.
*** Specialties *** I specialize teaching "late starters" (teens and adults new to piano) fundamentals in music in a fun and exciting way that will have you playing the music you love quickly.
For brass instruments, I am able to help brand new beginners build up their sound and facility through simple exercises that will have them astounded by their progress.
MATH: I use my years of classroom teaching and Master's degree in math education as experience to help guide you to the success you are seeking. I am able to tailor sessions to your specific needs with a few key points in mind:
- helping you catch-up, while also preparing you for what is ahead - balancing practice with conceptual knowledge and application - using research-based techniques to maximize your learning
I am a patient teacher, and well-equipped to explain tough topics in multiple ways. I like to use visuals and objects with simple examples to help my students really understand a concept before we try harder material. Total understanding and confidence is my goal for you.
My personal interests in mathematics are problem solving, puzzles, and combinatorics (think "How many different outfits can I make with all the clothes in my closet?"). If you're looking for an addicting puzzle to try, I suggest KenKen to all my students.

My name is John Lincourt and I spend most of my professional life playing trombone and leading an array of ensembles, ranging from solo performances to large scale wind ensembles and orchestras. I've been studying music and performing for 19 years. I received my Master's Degree in Instrumental Conducting from Mercer University and my Bachelor's in Trombone Performance from Catawba College. I am currently trombonist for Princess Cruises and have been offered contracts to play on ships that sail to Central and South America, Japan, British Columbia, Canada, Hawaii, Southeast Asia, and Alaska. I also compete in conducting workshops, one of which I was a winner.
I am the type of teacher that prefers to expand the students creativity by approaching music from a variety of perspectives. My goal is to use music as a way of opening

I am a professional orchestral trombonist and I have been an active brass teacher for almost twenty years. I have played in orchestras across the USA and Europe, including the Cincinnati Symphony, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and many more.
I aim to give my students a solid understanding of the technical skills required to play a brass instrument, and to share with them the musical knowledge I have gained from studying with some of the best brass teachers in the world.
I'm an experienced brass teacher with almost twenty years teaching and performing experience. I perform frequently with orchestras such as the Cincinnati Symphony, Columbus Symphony, the Charleston Symphony and I am a member of both the Carmel Symphony Orchestra and Des Moines Metro Opera.

Zach joined The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” Ceremonial Band in August, 2016. His primary duties include supporting funerals at Arlington National Cemetery as well as wreath laying ceremonies by heads of state and other foreign dignitaries at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, monthly retirement parades, special reviews, and arrival and departure honors for foreign dignitaries at the White House and Pentagon.
Zach received his bachelor’s degree from Baylor University where he studied with Dr. Kent Eshelman. He received his master’s degree from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, where he studied with David Kirk, Principal Tuba of the Houston Symphony.
Prior to joining “Pershing’s Own,” Zach performed with the Houston Ballet, East Texas Symphony and the Waco Symphony, as well as the festival orchestras of Lake Geor
ge, Brevard Music Center, National Music Festival, Texas Music Festival, and the Sewanee Music Festival.
In addition, Zach has performed in several solo competitions including the Artist Tuba solo competition at the 2014 International Tuba Euphonium Conference in Bloomington, Indiana, where he was a semi-finalist. He was also named winner of the 2011 Young Artist Tuba division at the International Leonard Falcone solo competition.
In his free time, he enjoys swing dancing with his wife Rebekah and playing with their cat, Lafayette.

My name is Chris, and I have been playing trumpet for over twenty years. I grew up in the TX public schools and was a two time TMEA All-State Musician. I hold three degrees in music from accredited universities: DMA at UGA, MM at UT-Austin, BM at NDSU. I enjoy teaching and helping others, and have a patient, kind approach to working with people. I am a Bass Trombonist, but teach all brass instruments. I have been teaching for 20 years. I help my students build their Tone, Technique and Articulation by teaching a simple Warm-Up routine. I have written an 8-page eBook entitled "Optimal Brass Playing" that describes ten areas of best practices in Brass playing. Each of my students receives one of these. I also heavily emphasize instruction on Sight Reading. In fact, I have recently written a book on the subject that I will soon publish entitled "Page to Performance". As a Composer, I have also written Duet parts to all 65 Introductory Melodious Etudes that were fist compiled by Alan Raph. I use these Duets in lessons to help my students strengthen their Listening Awareness skills.
Mr. Scott really is a nice person to meet. For my first voice lessons, He helped me identify what range I was comfortable with and introduced a few of his works that opened my perspective on reading music. He knows how to teach his material if you specify what exactly you want to accomplish.

Scott is someone who expertly emphasizes both the fundamentals of trombone playing and musicianship. I have had the opportunity to read his melodious etudes arrangements with him and his arrangements are expertly crafted to force the performers to work on listening, phrasing, intonation and sound quality all in one fell swoop. Scott's attitude is very warm and not condescending in the slightest. He is very positive while always encouraging the player to grow. If you are a low brass player who wants a deeper understanding on the intricacies of low brass performance and overall musicianship, you should absolutely give Scott a try.
I have over ten years of experience teaching brass instruments. I have taught brass at the collegiate level for six years and the K-12 level for five years. I received my Doctorate in Musical Arts degree in Trombone in 2018. I have a passion for playing and teaching all brass instruments. I am a professional trombonist. I have been Professor of Trombone and Euphonium at Muskingum University since 2013. I have also taught collegiality at Ohio State University and Ohio Wesleyan University, where I taught trombone, euphonium, and tuba. In addition to teaching at the college level, I have five years of public school experience. I am comfortable teaching beginnings, intermediate, and advanced students. I also have experience teaching special needs students.
As a performer, I have played with many top orchestras in the US, including the Buffalo Philharmonic, Columbus Symphony, Wheeling Symphony, Mobile Symphony, and many more. I have also performed at the International Trombone Festival as a soloist and chamber musician.

When I first met Lucas, I had been referred to him by my first instructor who had taken a job in Texas. I was 75 years old and, after not playing the trombone for 50+ years, had stated playing the trombone again two years after retiring. Lucas was in his final two years of his PhD training at OSU.
Lucas is a very accomplished trombonist whom I heard at several recitals. However, he was always patient and kind with me but also expected me to appreciate the importance of tone, slide position, rhythm, tempo, dynamics,etc.
Lucas helped me feel comfortable playing in a local community band but also willing to try more challenging pieces of music.
In the spring of last year, OSU would not let Lucas teach any non-OSU student, so I had to terminate my time with him. A sad time for me.

Lucas is a fantastic instructor and even more importantly a fantastic performer. He brings a great personality and well-paced instruction to his lessons. It is often difficult to find someone who can teach both tenor and bass trombone at a high level. However, with his unique background on both instruments, Lucas is well equipped in the instruction of both. He is great at listening to your playing and pinpointing exercises that can help you grow in the weaker areas of your performance. This paired with his extensive career as a performer gives each student the opportunity to gain skills from every angle of trombone performance.
