Music Theory is structured very much like our everyday living in our environment. In piano lessons, we explore the comparisons and derive at understanding about musical structures

About Heather
Hi, I'm Heather. I’m from a small town in Harford County, MD, called Abingdon. It’s really close to Baltimore, MD which is about 15 minutes away from Abingdon. I live with my husband and two bunnies. I’m an R.N. with a bachelors degree in Nursing and 16 years of training in music by masters of Curtis Institute, Julliard, and Peabody Conservatory. I have been teaching piano for over 12 years. In 2001, I had a diversion of career from nursing and I absolutely fell in love with the idea of teaching piano and I started giving piano lessons. I love playing my Masan & Hamlin grand piano for personal pleasure, and I spend a lot of time practicing for different occasions. I h’ve played in over twenty piano recitals, and for numerous other occasions such as in Weddings , Funerals and in Choir accompaniments.
On a different not
e, did you know that children who study a musical instrument learn responsibility and discipline, they gain pride in their accomplishments which in turn makes them confident, they learn to think in a logical manner, and they will perform better in school. These are just a few of the benefits children could gain through music lessons

My Specialties: My passion is classical music, however, I realize that the students'€™ interests are diverse, so, I teach pieces they request which include easy fun Pop Music, Hymns, Boogie, Rock, Country and other contemporary pieces.
My Education: At an early age, I took a great interest in music, so my older sister who is four years older than I taught me what she learned in her piano lessons. She also taught me music theory. At the age of 12-14 my parents sent me to private piano lessons. My piano teacher at that time eventually told me that I needed to find a new teacher because she had taught me all she knew. After that, I approached a well known Julliard Master in town. He took me on as a student after he heard me play the Beethoven'€™s Pathetique Sonata in C minor. I learned through Arthur Fiddler'€™s comment made in the newspaper that Mr. Chang, my teacher, in his opinion was the best piano teacher in Hawaii. Under Mr. Chang’s tutelage, I was exposed to a variety of classical pieces written by famous composers of the 15th to 18th centuries. At the age of 14, I made my first piano recital debut. My piano teacher was impressed with my talent and expressed his wish for me to pursue music and enter into Julliard. But, my parents being immigrants from Korea, did not think it was a good choice of career. So, I went into nursing instead, much to the consternation of my piano teacher. In 2001, I made a career change and found my passion for music revived again. I started teaching piano as well as taking Music Theory courses at a community college and taking lessons from a Julliard- Peabody master as well lessons from a Curtis Institute master. I continue taking piano lesson even now while I give piano lessons to beginner and intermediate students.

*** Lesson Details ***
In my piano studio, besides just learning to actually play the piano, students will engage in flashcard drills, writing work, and other activities to strengthen their overall knowledge of music. This will prepare them well for continued study in piano, for playing other instruments or singing, and for enjoying music in general. As an incentive to practice, our studio awards each week piano dollars for the time each student practices during the week. At the end of the year, we have an auction that the children could participate in using their piano dollars to purchase items.

In first the lesson the concepts stressed include:
1. Hand position and posture at the piano.
2. Right hand , left hand, and how the fingers are numbered.
3. Direction on the keyboard
4. The pattern of keys on the key board

In the first year of piano study, the concepts covered are:
1. Theory: identify steps, skips, and repeats; write and recognize 2nd -5ths intervals; sharp and flat signs; identify key signatures
2. Rhythms: whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, and dotted notes.
3. Technique: correct hand position; curved fingers, down –up wrist for phrasing, legato/staccato touch, penta scales; major chords and voicing (balance of hands) 5-finger melodies; single line melodies divided between hands; note-against-note playing, some melody/chord playing.
4. Repertoire: A Dozen A Day by Edna-Mae Burmae Books; Five-finger melodies by Faber Faber; Famous & Fun Pop Books by Carol Matz ; Boogie, Rock & Country Level 1 by James Bastien; Alfred’s Basic Adult Piano Course Lesson Book Level One for adult beginners.

In addition to lessons each student is required to participate in an annual piano recital to give them experience and confidence in performance.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living Room: grand piano, couches and chairs, parents can sit in on lesson

*** Specialties ***

I can help students work through the fundamentals of music theory and history to help with college prep exams, auditions, interviews, or just for fun!

About Sarah
I maintain a home studio in Catonsville and my school-age students have consistently been successful in competitions and auditions. I teach all ages, beginner through adult, and would also be pleased to offer flute ensemble or sectionals as well.

I have over 12 years of professional performing experience. While serving with the U.S. Army Field Band, I participated in numerous educational outreach activities ranging from elementary school presentations introducing younger students to music, high school sectionals and individual lessons, Google Hangouts for distance learning, and college-level master classes for flute students and chamber music groups.

I completed a Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Maryland, College Park in 2010. My thesis covered modern works by Flutist-Composers. I can introduce you to the work of ext
ended techniques on the flute, while also providing a solid foundation in technique, tone production and interpretation.

Background: Although I had played flute some years ago, I had not played for the last dozen years, and now with more time available, I was eager to get back to it. Having read Sarah's bio & watched her Army Field Band video, she seemed like the perfect teacher for me. Sarah met all my expectations. She listened carefully to my goals for the lessons. She truly is a professional, advising me on my concerns which were how to get a more beautiful tone, how to strengthen my embouchure, to find the best finger exercises to improve dexterity, and more.

_________________________________

Musicianship as a child was very exhilarating and stimulating so I like to put as much energ
y and excitement into each lesson as possible. Even if there are no signs of progress, the most important thing is to encourage the student because getting better at your instrument is exponential and will usually start off sluggish.

My first steps into getting to know the student better is to begin with having them choose a style of music that they like and play along with some of their favorite artists, in order for them to loosen up and get excited for learning. When I feel the student is fully comfortable and ready to begin our learning process, I will also have them play along with a style more complex, or out of their comfort zone, if you will. This establishes a sub conscious goal that they will want to reach every time they pick up their instrument which result in long-term commitment, respect and understanding of music.

*** Lesson Details ***
Before taking lessons with me, there are only 2 things you need to know:

.You are REQUIRED to express your creative side with 100% honesty, there will be no holding back in creativity in my classroom!

I teach some music theory as part of the ongoing lessons to almost all students but I encourage those who are interested to study the subject more thoroughly. I use the book 'GETTING MUSIC' which I co-authored (published in 2014) as the textbook for theory study as it provides a strong grounding and understanding of notation, scale construction, interval construction, chord construction and an overview of basic harmony principles and practices.

About Dennis
I have been teaching guitar for 25 years in the Washington DC metro area. I work with students 12 years of age and up, but I am especially experienced at teaching adult students regardless of whether they are beginners or have previous guitar experience. I have performed in acoustic Celtic, new age, funk, progressive rock, fusion and contemporary jazz groups and am currently performing regularly as a solo acoustic guitarist. I have composed over 40 works for solo guitar as well as numerous pieces for small jazz bands. I have played on numerous CDs including my most recent solo CD 'DARK MATTER'.

*** Lesson Details ***
I tailor the lesson materials to suit the interest of the student but I am dedicated to teaching students at any level to learn to better understand the fundamentals of the language of music. My teaching focuses on critic
al fundamentals of guitar technique including chords, scales and rhythm guitar playing as well as the art of improvisation. A significant amount of time in the lessons is spent actually playing with the students so that the technical concepts are put to use in real music situations. To further the student's understanding of music I frequently teach elements of music theory to those who are interested.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have guitars and amps available for student use although I prefer that the student bring their own instrument. I also have all the needed accessories, cables, stands etc.

*** Specialties ***
Adult students (and older teenagers ) whether beginners or experienced are a particular specialty of mine. Adult learners want to be treated as adults and often times benefit greatly from a more mentor oriented approach to teaching. I like to describe myself as both a teacher and a coach so as to emphasize that the student and I are on the same team sharing the goal of improving their guitar playing and musicianship. We are both on the same path of musical discovery. I am probably just farther along on that path with insights and knowledge that will hopefully help them along their way.

Dennis was my instructor and is a bit modest about his experience. He taught me on my mom's crappy nylon stringed spanish acoustic guitar back in the 80s. I hope he reads this and remembers the little studios at Fox's Music in Falls Church. He patiently taught me Rick Springfield songs, probably against his taste and better judgment. Anyway, he got me started in my teens and I'm still playing some of the tunes he taught me (plus a few hundred others) on a slightly nicer guitar these days, in my 40s. Keep rockin', Dennis, and thanks for helping spark a hobby I still enjoy decades later!

As a music major--with subsequent professional jazz, composition and songwriting experience--I feel confident to teach you music theory from any of a variety of angles, including: music reading basics (notation, rhythm and playing on piano), understanding chords/keys/scales (intermediate level) and writing/arranging/playing/improvising with this knowledge as your foundation (intermediate to advanced). I can help you prepare for exams (including Trinity, high school and college) as well.

About Jennifer
I am a professional singer-songwriter and have been teaching lessons fulltime for the last 12 years. I teach students of all ages and levels of experience. My current range of students include: kids with learning/developmental disabilities, teenagers who have starred in school musicals, and performing adult singer-songwriters. Whatever your background or desire, I can help you to cultivate your unique musical potential, and to strengthen your creative voice.

As a professional vocalist and pianist, I have worked freelance, in a variety of settings, over the years--including solo, in wedding bands, small jazz and rock/pop groups and with big bands. I have been singing with the Mood Swings Big Band for 6+ years. During that time, we have performed at the White House, the Chamber of Commerce and in Kennebunkport, Maine (at the Bush e
state).

I also have an extensive professional and personal background in meditation (10 years), astrology (5 years) and healing (particularly Reiki, 4 years). I am very interested in the intersection between a healing/mindfulness-awareness approach and singing/playing piano.

Classically trained vocalist, working church pianist and guitarist, Berklee College of Music graduate.

About Detrece
DeTrece "Dee" Lavender is a native of Miami, Florida. When her family moved to Sarasota, she was afforded the opportunity to study music and the performing arts as a student of the Westcoast School/Henry L. Porter School of Music. It was then that Dee began to understand the power of the creative arts as an effective form of emotional expression and release. By middle school, DeTrece began fine tuning her natural talents by studying classical voice which earned her several starring roles in the Sarasota Youth Opera, The Aslo Theater and the Players Theater. She is also a proud former member of the Westcoast Black Theater Troop in Sarasota, FL. Under the caring leadership of these opportunities, she was able to combine musical and life experiences in order to offer a more well rounded educational and musical experience for her students.

She was awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where she received a dual Bachelor of Music degree in Music Therapy and Vocal Performance (Class of 2003). It was through her service as a music therapist, Millieu (residential) counselor and music teacher in the Boston City Public Schools/Greater Boston Metropolitan Area, that she began to feel the call toward a greater understanding of the gravity and role of the socio-emotional needs of students (and their families/villages) in urban settings. This call brought her to Baltimore, MD where she enrolled in the Pastoral Counseling Masters of Science program at Loyola University. In addition to her studies, she currently teaches Elementary and Middle School choir/ Musicianship teacher in the Baltimore City Public Schools through the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's OrchKids Program. She also serves as Minister Of Music and Arts at two local churches.

All musicians should have a grasp of music theory! This is how musicians can hear a song and play it…

There are only seven notes in music… I will de-mystify the study of music theory wherein you will no longer be a slave to sheet music.

You will express your feelings effortlessly on the piano, Just remember, "Good Musicians See What They Hear, and Hear What They See!"

Learn to Play ANY Style of Music… Rock, Pop, Blues or Jazz through your knowledge of Music Theory!

About Ron
I began my formal study of piano at the age of five. I also studied violin, viola and tap dance during my youth. A very close friend and I founded the Young Senators, a R&B dance band which played throughout the Washington DC Metropolitan are. The group eventually became the “back up” group for Motown’s Eddie Kendricks, of Temptations fame. Throughout my career, I've performed with some celebrated music and movie stars; Cab Calloway, Esther Rolle, Brock Peters and Cecily Tyson, to name a few.

In the late 90s, worked for Jordan Kitts Music, providing (group and private) piano instruction for 3 year old up to adult seniors. My lessons were designed to build cumulative sequences of musical experiences that fostered continuous growth in musical understanding, skills, and knowledge with a focus towards contemporary and traditional ke
yboard harmonies.
In 2000, I worked for the Jewish Primary Day School (Grades K – 6), where I introduced the conceptual structure of music, focusing on melody, rhythm, and harmony and their expressive and stylistic organization. Program objectives included: 1) ability to listen with discrimination, 2) ability to sing on pitch within a limited range, 3) ability to play simple rhythm and melodic instruments, 4) ability to interpret music through body movements, impersonations, and dramatizations, and 5) ability to associate symbols of musical notation with musical concepts.

Today, I perform professionally and provide private online and offline piano instruction for children and adults.

I was referred to Jeremy by a former music teacher at Anne Arundel Community College. I was able to set up a weekly time with him at his house. He has a very clean and professional setting. I have been taking lessons under Jeremy's tutelage for a few months now. I have to say I am surprised at my own progress. My technical skills are blossoming but it's the music theory that is the real gift that Jeremy has given me. I always shrugged theory off thinking if I can hear it, I can play it. But now I am beginning to see the doors that music theory can open. Music is a vast universe and I have to give him credit for opening my ears, eyes, and mind to the possibilities of soooouuunds.

I've been studying music theory for six years, and I've been a music theory tutor for three years. I currently study music theory pedagogy at the Peabody Institute, and I am a graduate assistant for the music theory department.
Music theory is a mathematical approach to music, and can successfully be taught to every type of learner. I have experience teaching student just beginning, studying musical form, counterpoint, atonality, and ear training. Music theory can be abstract, but it improves the understanding and appreciation of music to a listener, composer, and performer.

About Madeline
Hello! I'm Madeline, and I'm a vocal performance and music theory pedagogy major at Peabody Institute. I've been a music theory tutor since Fall 2014, and teaching private voice lessons since January 2015. I love introducing students to new repertoire, showing them a different way of looking at concepts, and helping students realize how smart and talented they are. I want my students to feel prepared for where their love of music takes them, and we are absolutely going to have fun while learning. I'm excited that you are interested in learning, too, and I cannot wait to hear from you.

I am very shy but she manages to get me out of my shell. I have definitely felt that my confidence has improved tremendously since I started my lessons. Madeline is also extremely talented, patient, flexible, and helpful. She can very easily explain a concept or a technique by creating an image in your head, which I find immensely useful.
