Learn from a pro in a friendly, focused environment. Jazz, classical, blues, latin, salsa, funk or get ready for band and auditions. All great musicians have great ears and great time feel (groove). That along with a study of the fundamentals of trombone technique will get us started. Then we'll add the kind of songs that you like to play, and other great trombone literature.
*Heads Up! I'll be on tour with Brian Setzer for November and December and will only be available for online lessons :)
1. All my students feel like rock stars! Each lesson is fun and enriching. 2. I provide a clear lesson plan complete with goals, achievement levels, and performances.
*Experienced teacher and professional musician. *Has performed with: The Brian Setzer Orchestra, Great Good Fine Ok, 10,000 Maniacs, Tori Roze & The Hot Mess, Gaslamp Quarter Jazz Orchestra. *Recorded on national tv ads including Coca-Cola, Dreyer's, KFC. *Over 7,000 private lessons taught to over 300 students. *More than five years of classroom teaching experience in San Diego and Miami-Dade public schools: K-5 general music, middle and high school band, under graduate music history, directing college jazz ensembles *Students have inclu
ded: ages 4-96, beginners with no experience, undergraduate music majors, scholarship award winners, members of the San Diego Youth Symphony program, many locals in San Diego, and online students from around the world.
My mission is to provide a positive musical experience for all students. For some this includes rigorous preparation for an audition of some kind, for others it may be an introduction to music fundamentals to foster better listening skills and greater artistic appreciation. All students will be challenged to improve their listening, timing, and technique. All students will learn to play songs that they love.
Students get a minimum of one lesson per week. I am not able to schedule lessons every other week.
Recommendations for best results: 1. Make a three-month commitment to weekly lessons. 2. Practice at least three times a week, for a minimum of 15 minutes each time. This formula virtually guarantees results. Bring your instrument, music books, and a binder with sheet protectors ☺
*Scheduling policies: No Cancellations. If the student is unable to attend a lesson as scheduled I will use the time to email a video lesson to the student. Other alternatives: online lesson, reschedule, add time to next lesson (based on availability). Students may put lessons on hold up to once per quarter with at least one week notice.
To continue weekly lessons, students must maintain at least 90% attendance or the time slot may be forfeited.
Jordan was born and raised in the El Centro, California where he began playing the alto sax in the elementary band program. At the age of 12, he began his study of guitar and drums, performing in several rock and ska bands around his home town and San Diego. At age 14, is where he found his love for brass instruments when he took up the trombone. While in high school he became a soloist with the Imperial Valley College Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of former Basie trumpeter Jimmy Cannon. That lead Jordan to accept the Constance Weldon Music Scholarship to attend the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL.
While performing in South Florida Jordan appeared with major acts including 10,000 Maniacs, and appeared on the Spanish television show "Calle Ocho." He also gained invaluable experience teaching in Miami public schools. His first teaching assignment was at Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School where he directed 3 beginning bands, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, and their highly decorated Jazz Band. Later Jordan moved into the elementary setting, teaching vocal and instrumental music for grades K-5 at Cypress Elementary.
In 2007, Jordan returned to California to pursue a music career in San Diego. He can be seen performing all over San Diego, Orange, and LA Counties in styles ranging from rock, jazz, funk, blues, hip-hop, Latin, and more. He performs primarily on trombone, piano, and guitar, but is known to pick up percussion, harmonica, and other wind instruments as well. In 2011, Tori Roze & The Hot Mess were nominated for a San Diego Music Award in the category of "Best Blues Artist" after the release of their first album "From The Hip." They released their second album "Turbulence" last December, and are heard regularly on local San Diego radio. This album has also been nominated for Best Pop album for the 2013 San Diego Music Awards. In 2013, Jordan completed his Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from San Diego State University.
On stage, Jordan is a talented and versatile performer. He is known for his trombone sound and improvisational ability, as well as his positive relationship with his fellow musicians. In lessons, Jordan is energetic and creative.
You can expect a laid back, yet focused environment. Most of all, you can look forward to progress! Hope to see you soon.
*** Specialties *** In home beginning music lessons.
Trombone was my first instrument and I have studied classical and jazz for over 15 yrs.
Michael has worked with kids for 10 years in schools and arts programs to find fun and their best self through performance. He has taught orchestra, chamber music, jazz band and music theory in the public schools, while performing in local ensembles in and around the city. He also has studied drama, voice and movement and believes all these skills help in expressing yourself--no matter what pieces you want to play!
In addition to working with students K-12, he also loves working with adults. I try to provide a nurturing atmosphere for someone trying revive or discover previously hidden musical interests!
*** Lesson Details *** We begin with what we love. The student usually chooses one of his or her favorite songs to interpret. Later, we add music, usually from the classical or jazz fields, that build our skills and help us f
eel successful. All technique is based on real music. Learning scales, keys and music theory become part of the music. By the end of 6 months, we will have a "repertoire" of several songs that express our best self!
I equally cover fundamentals, technique, tone production, classical, jazz and anything else the student might be interested in.
I have been teaching private lessons for close to 10 years and have been an active performer for even longer, playing in all different types of groups, from rock bands and jazz groups to orchestras and brass bands. I studied music at Frostburg State University (Bachelors) and the Peabody Conservatory (Masters). I can teach just about any age and skill level and cover anything you are interested in learning; whether its a certain style, genre, technique or song.
*** Lesson Details *** My lessons are laid back, with a focus on perfecting the basics. Most students work out of a method book appropriate to their skill level. Aside from that we'll also spend time learning songs and pieces of the students choice. With the right amount of effort, you'll know your way around your instrument in no time at all
*** Travel Equipment ***
Will provide sheet music and exercises. My students should have a working instrument as well as any method book or sheet music we are working on.
Very pleasant teacher. First lesson went well. Thank you

Nathan is kind and encouraging. My son is enjoying the lessons and making progress towards playing tapas and reveille. He sounds good!! Online classes are convenient to add into a busy schedule.

This is the first lesson I got to listen to of my son working with Nathan. Usually I'm not home from work. I am really impressed with how much he was able to help my son improve so quickly. I wish we had started this much sooner.
Trombone is my primary focus. I have been playing for 15+ years and have spent my life figuring out how to teach myself to play it better every day.

*** Lesson Details *** My lessons are geared towards a set of goals that are created between the student's wants and my expectations for them to be successful at what the student wants to achieve. For each student, I use a different set of pedagogical tools designed to get them to the goals they want. The main goal I have for all my students is that their fundamentals on their instrument will be at the level that they can complete their goals with ease. Over their time with me, they will have the skills to coach themselves when they practice and tackle any music they come across.
*** Travel Equipment *** I expect them to provide and music stand and their music. These are both things that they need to have at their home for practice.
*** Specialties *** I teach and perform both jazz and classical music. Almost any style that uses a trombone or brass instruments, I have performed in and have a strong foundation in.
Very patient and methodical in his approach for our beginner

I am former music major and long time amateur trombonist and was looking for someone to help bring my playing (back) up to the next level. Bill has been amazing at being able to spot areas for improvement and clearly provide several suggestions and approaches to correct them. Very pleased and highly recommend!
May 23, 2017
Bill is a stand-up guy. My 11-yr-old beginner daughter is happy with her lessons so far and he interacts with me in a friendly and polite manner. He is respectful of our time and does what he says he's going to do. Can't ask for much more. We are looking forward to a summer of trombone lessons with him.
I will work with you to reach your goals in a way that suits your needs while having fun
I am a former instrumental music teacher in the Catholic school system. I have been teaching in some way, shape or form for the past 20 years. My methods of teaching vary depending on the student and what they need to succeed. I make myself available between lessons via text, phone and email for questions regarding the lesson. Please let me know if you have issues with animals, I can put them in another part of the house. I have both cats and a dog. All of which are friendly.
Muy Buena Maestra con buen metodo de ensenansa con ninos. Mantubo muy entretenida a la nena durante toda la hora de clase. Muchas Gracias. Quedamos encantados.

My grandson said it was a great lesson. And he told his dad he had fun. I now know that I will either buy a keyboard or a piano so that he can continue his lessons and practice. Thanks for invoking this type of enthusiasm into my little guy. I hope this is the beginning of more to come.
The student will be instructed on the basics of proper playing techniques, music theory, and musicianship. They will learn to read music and also play by ear which will make them a well rounded player.
About Luther A.
Luther unique talents as educator, instrumentalist, conductor, vocal coach, cinematographer, composer and arranger make him a sought-after teacher. Currently, Luther is working with the Bridgeport Board of Education at Roosevelt Elementary School for President Obama's Arts and Humanities Turn-Around Arts Initiative he is the Executive Director and Program Director of Blackwell's School of Music and Film and Minister of Music Director for New Hope Missionary Baptist Youth Singers.
Luther stays where I’m at and then helps me go the next step. That is useful for consistent gradual progress without the frustrations of moving either too slow or too fast (I am a beginning tenor saxophone player). Nice interpersonal style, patient and easy going, while methodical.

I think Luther is great. He works with my 10-year old son on piano, singing and even trumpet and violin as needed. My son has to work hard to progress, and Luther customizes the lesson plan for him and seems to understand him well. I'm really excited about them working together.
I hold a Masters Degree in Brass Performance, am a certified North Carolina Teacher, and have 20 years of playing experience and 10 years of teaching experience on brass instruments. I would love to be able to sit down and help you achieve your goals and find your own musical voice!

He is a member of the National Association for Music Educators, the International Trumpet Guild, as well as the American String Teachers Association.
Jonathan is an amazing teacher. He is teaching both of my kids, one is learning guitar and the other one Violin. He adapts his teaching method to the way that he knows will work with each one of them. They have learned so much, and we enjoy our time in the studio. He is a great musician.

Jonathan is a great teacher! I had my very first violin lesson with him, and he made me feel like I can actually learn how to play this instrument.
My focus as a teacher begins with the fundamentals of sound production. It is my belief and experience that, given strong fundamentals, one can learn to do anything else they need to on the horn. We will spend time breathing and developing beautiful tone, as well as practical application of these skills with actual music. We'll start with whatever music you are working on currently and will probably expand to other etude books and solo repertoire.
My name is Randall Smith, and I am excited to work with you! Music is my first love and playing trombone is what gets me out of bed every day. I am currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in trombone performance at Brigham Young University-Idaho. While my main emphasis is classical performance, I also study and play jazz. I have been principal/section leader or second chair in every auditioned ensemble on campus, including Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Band, Sound Alliance Big Band, and Chamber Brass. I also study music theory and composition in both classical and jazz idioms. My hope with this endeavor is to reach students who may not have an opportunity to take lessons otherwise, since I was unable to study privately through middle school and most of high school. I hope you'll invite me to join you in taking the next steps of your musical
"Jeremy really enjoyed his lesson with Bill. Bill is great with kids and I highly recommend him. If he played guitar I might take lessons from him!"
"As an adult student and only 3 weeks in--so far so good! Alba is definitely an accomplished musician and a very good teacher. Her teaching style is very p
ositive and right to the point, which works well for me."
"Rachel is a fantastic teacher and tutor. Her expansive knowledge of music theory and ear training contributes to her vast musical ability. Not only is she
a great performer, but she is able to break down the music and explain it in a variety of ways in order to effectively teach students at any level. Most importantly, Rachel is an advocate for students expressing their own musical voice. She will not tell a student exactly how to play a given piece, but rather she will teach them the necessary tools for the student to play well, and allow them to explore their own musical interpretation from there.
Outside of music, Rachel is a genuine and kind-hearted person. She is understanding and empathetic, and this carries over into her teaching as well. That being said, Rachel holds herself and her students to high standards. Students will hear improvement in their tone, technique, and musicality as they work with Rachel. I give her my highest recommendation for all subjects."
"Best instructor ever"
"My son has taken a few lessons with Alexis and we will continue. She is never late. She gets straight to the lesson and sends practice information to my s
on via email. This allows him a week to prepare/practice with for the following lesson."
"Great Trombone Teacher!
We needed a Trombone teacher for my 7th grader this past summer and Jessie was available. He has since then proven to be a lovely
teacher - very knowledgable, supportive, easy to understand and professional. I would definitely recommend him to other parents."
"He really knows his stuff, and my son plays noticeably better with each lesson."
"Paul is a very gifted musician and a great teacher. He is passionate about music, and very patient with students. My son loves his trambone lessons. I hi
ghly recommend Paul."
"Jordan is great. He fixed up my kiddo's school trombone, and taught him the basics of how to use it. We look forward to more lessons with him."
