Private Blues Guitar Teacher

I can teach any student all the blues licks they need to have fun playing the blues. I also use this as a foundation for my begging students to learn how to improvise.

For intermediate/advanced students, we can move beyond the minor pentatonic scales and into all the different types of sound you can play on a blues.

Advanced: for advanced students, we look at how musicians in the past have played the blues. I can guide the student to more of the roots blues or the sophisticated jazz blues.

About Marvin

I help students make the guitar a part of their life, teaching them to play with individuality, creativity, and proper technique.

***for DC In-home students, minimum lesson time must be 60 minutes.***

Taught privately in the Washington DC area for 3 years before moving to NYC to earn my Bachelors of Fine Arts in Music majoring in Jazz Guitar. I have accumulated more than 10 years of experience teaching the guitar. I gigged regularly in the DMV and NYC areas and have been doing a lot of shows, private parties, receptions, weddings, and business events. i have made recordings in studios and I am very musically active. I am extremely passionate, and I live to play, learn, and of course teach the guitar.

*** Lesson Details and Teaching Philosophy ***
I love playing guitar and YOU will too!

The guitar is a fantastic instrument

and is so much fun to play. I incorporate musical fun into my lesson as much as I can because I want students to learn how to "play" music not "work" music. I have learned from many great musicians that music is driven by passion and should be enjoyable to the performer and this is felt by the audience. Teaching and learning are similar. I enjoy teaching so much and my students always have a smile on their face after the lesson.

Play the music YOU love!

I have learned in my experience that students show the most growth and progress while learning material that they are interested in. I have been trained to be able to play almost any tune I hear, so I can teach my students how to play their favorite tunes exactly how they hear them!

This means that lessons are customized and fine-tuned for every student!

Slow and steady WINS the race!

Learning music is not a race, but this lesson is true when learning music. I am able to work with students to help them improve by identifying and isolating problems in their playing. I can create simple exercises for the student to slowly and surely become closer to the guitarist they wish to be.

I am very flexible and prioritize the students need over everything else. But with everything I teach, I am able to relate back to theory. I show students how to practice effectively to build their chops. And I of course I can instruct the students how to read and write music, with proper technique. I also have an educated background with Theory and Ear Training, all of which I pass on to all my students.

I care very much about my students and love to see them excel!

*** Studio Equipment ***
music studio in basement; amps; guitars (acoustic & electric); cables, music stands, sheet music

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide with me sheet music paper, a music stand, and a small amplifier if necessary.

The student should have a private space suitable to take lessons in and a guitar to learn with.

*** Specialties ***
Modern Guitar
Rock, R&B, Funk, Acoustic, Pop, Jazz, and also Christian music

Private Blues Guitar Teacher

I can teach you theory and improvisation to make the most out of jamming with your friends and refine your chops

About Aleksis

My name is Aleksis B., but many of my students know me as Mr. B. I am a professional instructor and performing musician who combines a love of music with a desire to help others who want to achieve their highest musical potential. I try to make that passion show in everything I do.

My education includes classical voice training with Michele Howard Hansen, an opera singer that often performs at the Kennedy Center. I studied piano with Geoffrey Chappell, who writes for Jazz Times. I also received compositional training on multiple instruments from Stanley Cowell, who recorded and performed with legends like Miles Davis.

I have been performing professionally since 1992. I studied education in college and did my student teaching in a music class at Goshen Elementary School in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

I have been teaching music pr

ofessionally now for over twenty years. Some students want to take a few lessons to see if it is something they will enjoy, others have worked with me for over a decade. I have mentored several students who have gone on to professional careers. I have experienced a lot of success teaching young children and those with special needs. I have been blessed with a tremendous amount of patience and truly enjoy teaching anyone who wants to learn.

Whatever your goals or abilities, I look forward to working with you!

*** Lesson Details ***
Experience fun based lessons as my teaching approach is relaxed and inspirational. I enjoy working with all ages, adjusting my teaching methods to accommodate your learning style and abilities. Learn to play the music you love! You learn best when you enjoy what you are playing, I can help you play along with your favorites or even write your own songs. I always ask my students at the beginning of a lesson "What would you like to do today?" Then structure the lesson accordingly into a routine that the student can practice on their own. Generally the time is divided into warm ups, learning new material, then picking a fun song the student choses. Whether your interest is Classical, Jazz, Rock, Pop music, etc... I'm here help you reach your goals so let's make your dreams come true with music together!

*** Travel Equipment ***
Books, Guitar, music stand, metronome, picks, tuner, page clips, capo, media player, laptop, Keyboard (on request), and recording equipment (on request)

*** Specialties ***
With Voice I specialize in helping people prepare for auditions such as American Idol. I have students who simply want to be karaoke stars. I have several professional singers that hire me as a voice coach and producer for recording sessions. I have taught children as young as 2 and those that retired with a lifelong dream to sing. Though my training is classical, I can teach Jazz, Pop, Rock, Rap, R&B, etc...whatever is fun for the student. I highly recommend learning to read music but I do not push it unless parents want their child to.

With Piano I can teach traditionally from Alfred and Bastien Piano Courses depending if they are auditory or visual learners. For Kinesthetic learners I use Hanon scale exercises and Rothman Rhythm Exercises. For those that want to learn notation I introduce classical and Jazz composers unless there is a popular artist/band/movie theme etc...that they would like to learn. However I do not push students to read music unless their parents would prefer it. I tend to keep more students that want to learn to play by ear especially adults by using rhythm training and music theory exercises and then applying them to songs they love. For piano I haven't had much success with children younger than 3. I also have a lot experience working with special needs children.

For Guitar I teach Classical, Acoustic, and Electric all styles and genres. I encourage sight reading but don't mind using tabs. I use more exercises with these students, since the first month students have a hard time making a sound. I try to make the lessons fun by having students strum chords along with songs they chose. I teach lead and rhythm even songwriting and composition. Job satisfaction for me is seeing my students leave a lesson with a smile on their face so I make sure to be a fun based teacher that doesn't give the student a hard time about not practicing.

For Recording and Performance I use the knowledge I gained doing Pro Audio Sales for Guitar Center from 2000-2002 to help clients build their own home studio. I have lots of producers and engineers I work with on a regular basis to produce broadcast quality audio and video recordings and help my students use their lessons and pre-production for those opportunities. I can teach Garage Band or Pro Tools classes on navigating the software and utilizing all the commands. I can also teach room acoustics and using the right microphone and how to position them with the right equipment and the right acoustics to get the best possible tone that they are looking for. I can also teach editing, mixing, looping, sampling, midi, and mastering so that the student can eventually work on their own writing, performing, and recording their music.

Private Blues Guitar Teacher

Experienced teacher of 5 years, specializing in beginner/ intermediate guitar, voice and performance. All ages welcome. Whether you're looking to play the blues, serenade your crush, shred face-melting guitar solos, or any other smattering of skills, lessons will be catered to meet the individual goals of the student. Not to mention random bits of musical trivia, picked up from years of obsessive Wikipedia reading.

About Jake

I have been teaching guitar for over 7 years and recently graduated from Macalester College with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. My approach to teaching is student focused, emphasizing the individual goals of each student rather than adhering to more traditional, standardized notions of music education. As such, emphasis is placed on modern musical styles, repertoire, and technology. I have found that this helps to maintain students’ motivation, and improve retention and skill. After all, music should be a fun challenge, not a chore.

Additionally, I spent the last two years working as an audio engineer in concert halls and recording studios. As such, all students, regardless of instrument, will have the opportunity to learn recording techniques and make a high quality recording of their work, when/if they feel ready.

Thanks for your intere

st in lessons. I hope to hear from you soon!

Private Blues Guitar Teacher

My methods vary from student to student. I focus primarily on ear training, applications of chord construction to learning solo's, songs, and chords, and reading guitar tablature when a student is lost. I believe guitar is an especially creative instrument and do NOT focus on reading sheet music as a part of the student's learning experience. An emphasis is also placed on performance as well as proper technique to avoid injuries. Listening to music is an extra-curricular activity that should be done every day with a special emphasis on hearing what the 'greats' do with a magnificent piece of wood in their hands.

About Greg

I have been playing guitar for over 14 years, played in four different gigging bands ranging from country to jazz to improvisational funk. I taught music theory, guitar, and bass at M.E.A. Music in Lexington Park, Maryland for 3 years and currently teach and manage at the School of Rock in Arnold. I earned an Associates Degree in Music at Anne Arundel Community College and a Minor in Music at St. Mary's College of Maryland. I currently perform as an acoustic trio in the DMV area with some very talented musicians.

Greg is both knowledgeable and extremely patient. He taught me the fundamentals of guitar, and his lessons have stuck with me more than any others I’ve had. I have him to thank for getting me started, and I continue to improve with what he taught me in mind! If you’re looking for a teacher who will teach you while breaking down the technique, he’s definitely your guy!

Mr. Sylvester is one of the greatest. He is not just an amazing guitarist, but he is also very kind. He treats people with so much respect. He speaks to me and my mom so nicely. He is very patient. He has a deep knowledge of music and knows how to get the most out of even the least talented people (like me!). He doesn't ever get mad if you make a mistake or forget to bring your music notes. We were so lucky to find Mr. Sylvester.

Mark is a talented musician who plays and teaches multiple stringed instruments. His lessons are always informative and supportive. They are driven by the student’s interest, so anything you want o learn— styles of music, how to do a particular technique, music theory— you can bring to class. And every now and then he organizes a recital— terrifying but great practice!

FIND -YOUR- VOICE.
Take lessons from a professional
with a Master’s Degree in Music Performance.
In college, I focused on opera, but I have years of experience playing in bands and ensembles of classical, jazz, and rock styles.
I'm also an audio engineer who can help you find THAT sound you're looking for!

Learn the style YOU CHOOSE
with the foundations of Classical Training
and the MUSIC THEORY to match!

About Carl

Hello!

If you're reading this, it's because you like music and you are interested in taking lessons... and I think THAT'S GREAT!

Everyone has to begin somewhere. For me, my parents started me on lessons for the Violin when I was four years old. Later I played Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Concert (Upright) Bass, and discovered my chief instruments, the Voice and the Guitar. Because of that foundation, I have already had a life in music, and not just the classical music I was exposed to as a youngster.

I'm an opera singer, I'm a guitarist, and I'm an Audio Engineer. (For those of you who might not know, an Audio Engineer is someone who is trained in the art of recording and recording technology. We know about the SCIENCE of sound itself!) I've got a varied background in many different styles, and what it takes to PERFORM them, and that

's what I can bring to the table as YOUR music teacher. I've been on the opera stage with an orchestra, sung in a jazz band for swanky gala events, and played in dive bars with my rock band.

But please, before we begin, allow me to temper your expectations: Nobody, no matter how talented, reached their musical prime in a day, a week, or even a year. Musical training takes a great deal of discipline, focus, and perseverance.

I'm still working at it, too. =)

Together, we can work to realize YOUR musical goals, one day at a time.

"Jesse is an excellent guitarist who knows more tunes than you could ever imagine. He's knowledgeable, friendly, patient, and willing to adapt to many styl
es. He is rooted in jazz, but can teach to any preference. I highly recommend him for guitarists of any age/skill level in the market for a young teacher that is a quality veteran in his own right!"

"I'm an older self taught player that finally decided to take lessons. I have been working with William for a little over a month now. He began with cleani
ng up my playing position. This was really big for me as I have had issues that prevented me from playing as long as I would like due to back and hand pain.
William spent the time to figure out where I was and wanted to go. Im very pleased with the progress I'm making and am confident that taking lessons with William was a great choice. He has also been very giving of his time to help pick out instruments and gear to move my instruction along.
I see a lot of instructors here that are players trying to augment their gigging money by giving lessons. Williams education and background really show in his lesson presentation and effectiveness."

"I started taking weekly electric guitar lessons with Mr. Soukis at his Times Square studio, after watching many videos of him rockin' the blues at various
venues in New York City. He is one of those rare teachers who is not only knowledgeable, but also able to share the knowledge with his students in a comfortable and relaxing manner. I have always been afraid of the guitar but the man has cured my guitar phobia. He has made learning the guitar approachable and fun!!"

"I am a 64 year old woman who wanted to learn to play electric guitar blues lead. I have worked with musicians who teach and have been very disappointed. A
s soon as I read Chris' profile, I knew he would be a good teacher. I am a professional tutor and I could tell by the way Chris wrote about teaching that he would be skilled. I was absolutely accurate. Chris knows a lot about music and guitar playing, and he is also thoughtful and very present to the student. He is flexible and can move with a student who needs that. He also can work from a theory based place if the student needs that. To help me, he has written tab guitar licks for me, recorded Mp3 examples, and chord diagrams. I cannot speak highly enough about Chris as a teacher and highly recommend him."

"Frank is a thorough and detailed teacher. He is always prepared for each lesson and will cater each week based on your needs and interests. He is skil
led at teaching theory and technique through practice and real life musical examples. In other words you will learn to play a lot of music while simultaneously becoming a more knowledgeable musician. As a musician he is like a human jukebox And has experience playing in many different styles. I purchased his books, published by Alfred‘s music from Amazon and I have used those as reference points for my learning as well. Without a doubt I recommend Frank as a teacher and for any age group or level of interest. I give him five stars he’s fantastic!"

Arty
"To be honest, I wouldn't know exactly where to begin to write this review so I am going to just speak from the heart - and a little bit of experience. I
started with Christian about a month ago. I held off leaving a review because a good teacher of anything shows they are good by also showing how they build off what what they are teaching and how the student reacts to what he/she is being taught.

I can honestly say that Christian has exceeded my expectations, but it might be for the non-musical aspect that he has. As far as ability goes, just watch his videos and you will see he knows much more than necessary to teach anyone else how to play. However, what makes Christian so great at teaching is that he doesn't translate that ability into unreasonable expectations for his students. He realizes the personal nature of music and will help the student achieve their own personal goals and even more, if the student wishes to do so and puts in the practice and effort of learning.

He has been very good at building on what he has previously taught. Christian has also given much attention to where I seem to connect with music, which is personal only to me. I don't connect to music the same as he does. He knows that and makes an effort to see music from the way I am seeing it, at least he does that during our time in the studio together. This helps each student be the best that THEY can be. This is what a good teacher does. A great teacher also, with time, slowly makes himself obsolete. He teaches the student to figure out how to teach themselves. Christian does this as well. It is not his intention to lose students. But he absolutely wants me to see WHY I am doing what I am doing so I can apply that theory to other aspects of the guitar ON MY OWN.

So, I am not saying he is the best teacher out there. "Best" is a funny word anyway. What I am saying is: Christian will help you be as good as you can possibly be within the realm that you want to be in, as long as you want to actually learn the instrument fully by putting in the work -- work is always necessary.

So I should also mention that I am a song writer and a piano player, and have been for over 20 years. That is why I can say I am speaking from experience. I have had instructors before. I know what it is like and I know what to look for. You can't go wrong with Christian, if you are really looking to learn how to play the guitar and get the most out of your dedication to the instrument."

Blues Guitar Basics: How to Play a Blues Shuffle

By Megan L.

Ready to learn to play blues guitar? This lesson from guitar teacher James W. is the perfect place to start... What is a shuffle, anyway? A shuffle is a rhythm of 8th notes played in triplets, essentially playing 3/4 time over a 4/4 beat to make the music swing. Blues, pop, jazz, and rock musicians all use the shuffle. The blues shuffle is a fun pattern that is simple to absorb into your playing across many genres of music. Think of pop, rock, big band, and blues as being a part of the s …
