I can teach students how to play along to their favorite acoustic guitar songs from artists like John Meyer, Taylor Swift, and so on.

For more Intermediate and advanced students. I can show special acoustic techniques such as chord voicings and introduce them to fingerstyle guitar.

For even more advanced students, I can breakdown the construction of solo acoustic guitar arrangements of songs and chord melodies.

About Marvin

I help students make the guitar a part of their life, teaching them to play with individuality, creativity, and proper technique.

***for DC In-home students, minimum lesson time must be 60 minutes.***

Taught privately in the Washington DC area for 3 years before moving to NYC to earn my Bachelors of Fine Arts in Music majoring in Jazz Guitar. I have accumulated more than 10 years of experience teaching the guitar. I gigged regularly in the DMV and NYC areas and have been doing a lot of shows, private parties, receptions, weddings, and business events. i have made recordings in studios and I am very musically active. I am extremely passionate, and I live to play, learn, and of course teach the guitar.

*** Lesson Details and Teaching Philosophy ***
I love playing guitar and YOU will too!

The guitar is a fantastic instrument

and is so much fun to play. I incorporate musical fun into my lesson as much as I can because I want students to learn how to "play" music not "work" music. I have learned from many great musicians that music is driven by passion and should be enjoyable to the performer and this is felt by the audience. Teaching and learning are similar. I enjoy teaching so much and my students always have a smile on their face after the lesson.

Play the music YOU love!

I have learned in my experience that students show the most growth and progress while learning material that they are interested in. I have been trained to be able to play almost any tune I hear, so I can teach my students how to play their favorite tunes exactly how they hear them!

This means that lessons are customized and fine-tuned for every student!

Slow and steady WINS the race!

Learning music is not a race, but this lesson is true when learning music. I am able to work with students to help them improve by identifying and isolating problems in their playing. I can create simple exercises for the student to slowly and surely become closer to the guitarist they wish to be.

I am very flexible and prioritize the students need over everything else. But with everything I teach, I am able to relate back to theory. I show students how to practice effectively to build their chops. And I of course I can instruct the students how to read and write music, with proper technique. I also have an educated background with Theory and Ear Training, all of which I pass on to all my students.

I care very much about my students and love to see them excel!

*** Studio Equipment ***
music studio in basement; amps; guitars (acoustic & electric); cables, music stands, sheet music

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide with me sheet music paper, a music stand, and a small amplifier if necessary.

The student should have a private space suitable to take lessons in and a guitar to learn with.

*** Specialties ***
Modern Guitar
Rock, R&B, Funk, Acoustic, Pop, Jazz, and also Christian music

I started taking lessons with Roger almost an year ago. I was completely clueless when I signed up for classes. He convinced me that I can play a musical instrument. He has guided me a lot throughout. From picking up a guitar, to teaching me my first song. He is very passionate about music and that shows from his work as a musician and as a teacher. Roger tries to make sure that his students love music the same way he does. As a teacher he is very patient and flexible. He tailors each class to his student's needs.
He is one of the greatest teacher I have worked with. I really look forward to my lesson every week.

Roger teaches our 8 year-old daughter introduction lessons for guitar. His casual approach and friendly demeanor are a perfect approach. Our daughter anticipates weekly interaction with Roger; she considers him a friend who plays guitar games and patiently listens to her stories while they play.

Roger is both a skilled musician and measured teacher focused on the long-game of loving music rather than immediate gains. We are very please with his work.

Roger was my first guitar teacher, and one of the best teachers that I've had the pleasure to work with. As a professional guitarist, I have had the chance to look back on when I was studying with Roger and compare my opinion now to the opinion I had while I was studying with him. My opinion now is the same as it was back then: Roger is an exceptionally capable and talented educator. He is very easy to work with and is always flexible in each lesson. Flexibility is important; an ideal teacher will have lesson plans with specific skills that he/she feels the student needs to learn, but they will also allow the student's current interests to guide the lessons. Roger was always happy to address any questions or concerns I had, but also made sure to guide my attention to critical skills that helped me grow as a musician. One such skill is proper technique, which is necessary for improving the student's ability to play and for preventing injury. With his background as a classical guitarist, Roger was able to teach me perfect left and right hand technique, which is something I still consider to be one of my strongest assets as a guitarist. His skills and interests extend far beyond classical guitar into genres like rock and jazz. In our lessons we would work on just about anything. We covered topics and styles like Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Wes Montgomery, improvisation, James Taylor's fingerstyle playing, music theory, and sight reading. Overall, I found Roger to be an ideal teacher for students at any skill level, from total beginners to those who are highly experienced.

Modern guitar music is often filled with heavy effects that mask the natural tone of the instrument.
A well played acoustic guitar can blend into any musical environment. Bluegrass, Folk, Jazz, Blues, Funk, Rock, and Metal, or any cutural/ world musc. And yet, it's an instrument which needs no accompaniment.
Make your guitar sing by learning good technique, creative rhythmic picking and strumming, and unique chord voicings. Develop sight reading, improvisation, and composition. Within just a few lessons, you can expect results in learning a song of your choice, and understanding the songwriting choices made by your favorite artists.

Jason tailors the course to a student's individual learning pace and needs. There is also a good combination between theory and learning cords to play a song. Technique is emphasized to build good habits and a foundation for future growth.

Private Acoustic Guitar Teacher

My methods vary from student to student. I focus primarily on ear training, applications of chord construction to learning solo's, songs, and chords, and reading guitar tablature when a student is lost. I believe guitar is an especially creative instrument and do NOT focus on reading sheet music as a part of the student's learning experience. An emphasis is also placed on performance as well as proper technique to avoid injuries. Listening to music is an extra-curricular activity that should be done every day with a special emphasis on hearing what the 'greats' do with a magnificent piece of wood in their hands.

About Greg

I have been playing guitar for over 14 years, played in four different gigging bands ranging from country to jazz to improvisational funk. I taught music theory, guitar, and bass at M.E.A. Music in Lexington Park, Maryland for 3 years and currently teach and manage at the School of Rock in Arnold. I earned an Associates Degree in Music at Anne Arundel Community College and a Minor in Music at St. Mary's College of Maryland. I currently perform as an acoustic trio in the DMV area with some very talented musicians.

"I took lessons with Mr. Dustin Newbold for 4 years, starting my Freshman year in high school. I had him all four years during high school and in that tim
e I learned more than any other teacher could possibly teach. I learned how to read Treble and Bass music, how to play Acoustic, Electric, and Bass guitar, and even a little drums in his marching band. He also taught me the history of how music really came to be. He is very knowledgeable in music and I wouldn't choose any other teacher. His style of teaching is by far the best, he will interact 100% with his students and listen to what they want to learn and he will make sure they learn what they want. I went in wanting to know more about classic rock, blues, and more current rock, and he did just that. He would make sure I understood everything I wanted to know before we moved on, he taught me some of the history that went behind the music I wanted to learn, and he helped me explore more in those areas of music. I also took his music appreciation class and music theory classes and he didn't leave a single detail out. Highly recommend him to any student because he can teach everything there is to learn and he is very patient. Very proud of what I have accomplished as one of his students!"

"I met Jordan while he worked at a local cafe and he was always very kind to me and my 2 sons as they were growing up from a very young age. During one of
our many conversations, Jordan mentioned he was a music instructor. He is not the only person in the cafe who played instruments but Jordan's guidance related to music was always VERY genuine. You could easily tell he knew what he was talking about while others just gave answers on a whim.
Both of my kids showed some interest in guitar and we began lessons with Jordan a few months ago. I could not be happier. I have also joined in and we quickly learned how to play songs. His lessons are great and it is amazing how he keeps my 8 and 10 year old so focused. I have been learning too. I would give more stars if I could. Jordan is a very talented musician, a great person and an excellent educator. I would highly recommend him to anyone wanting to seriously learn guitar."
