Transcend the instrument and be able to play with anything. Learn your favorite tunes by ear and on the guitar. That is what I focus on. From beginning rudiments all the way through completely breaking down and conceptualizing the fretboard.

I've been playing for 20 years and have studied jazz at Peabody Conservatory and Berklee College of Music. However, I have played in bluegrass, rock, funk, hip hop and klezmer bands, as well.

I try to create an individual approach for each student because every person learns uniquely. I work with people on skills that apply to music at large, as well as the guitar 🎸. My goal is to help a student learn how to learn on their own, and provide the tools to do so.

Munro is the best ! The best teacher I have ever had. Very knowledgeable about music theory which enables the student to learn improvisation. He simplifies theory making it very easy to understand. He also understands that every student has his/her own learning curve and is never intimidating.
Anna
After studying with Munro for 5 years, I can say without a doubt, I would not be at the level I am now without him. From the first lesson, he had me playing a song. Munro is patient, kind, and extremely knowledgeable. I could not recommend Munro enough for future students!
Ed
I consider myself extremely lucky to have Munro as my instructor. I am in my 50's and only decided to learn to play piano several years ago. Munro can teach the most advanced techniques, music theory and composition, yet still has the patience for someone like myself, who is a casual learner that just wants to play for enjoyment and doesn't always have much time to practice. He is never frustrated by my slow progress, always supportive, and has a knack for finding music that will challenge but not overwhelm me. And while my competency at playing still has a long way to go, my understanding of music, and appreciation for composition are something I would not have received from most any other instructor.
I have no reservations endorsing Munro, regardless of your ambition, skill level or goals.

"With a patient and intuitive approach, Juan tailors each lesson to fit not only the student’s skill level, but also desire for depth of understanding. When I first began taking lessons, I was only able to plunk a few chords and play along with a few basic songs. However, over the course of a year and a half with Juan, I gained a foundational knowledge of the classical guitar, as well as the confidence to site read and play a range of other styles of guitar music. He seamlessly integrated music theory concepts into song studies, helping me learn major/minor scales and chord shapes, and then apply this knowledge to better understand song structures and composition. It has been such a great experience learning from Juan, especially because he is both an exemplary teacher and guitar player!"

"I couldn't have asked for a better teacher!

Blake Clifford goes beyond the 'call of duty' & really takes the time to make sure that his students receive exactly what they need. The teaching environment is comfortable & relaxed with all of the professional resources you would expect & more.

With Blake Clifford you get real professional training - he knows what he's talking about, & he gets straight to the point. In just the little time that I've been taking classical guitar with Blake, I've learned so much. He teaches skills that you can actually apply - it's not just a bunch of theory, and that helps me out a lot by getting to the real 'meat' of the training fast.

I highly recommend Blake Clifford to anyone who is absolutely serious about improving their musicianship & getting over stubborn plateaus."

Should Classical Violinists Learn to Improvise?

A few weeks ago the Washington Post published an article about musician Hannah Hanh and her struggles with improvisation.  As a classical violinist, she hadn't had much training for spontaneity, naturally. The article points out improvisation as a technique that has fallen by the wayside for many performers these days. And it asks an interesting question: Can (and should) classical musicians learn to improvise? We've talked a lot about improvising on the guitar and drums, but where do classi …

Learning Classical Guitar: Can I Use Tabs or Should I Read Music?

Whether you're brand new to guitar, or just new to classical guitar, you might be wondering, "what's the deal with tabs and sheet music?" Let guitar teacher Raymond L. clear up the fog and put you on the right path to classical guitar success... To get started, let's be sure to clearly distinguish standard musical notation from what we call nowadays "tab" notation. What is Tab? The name tab, or guitar tab, is derived from tablature, a form of musical notation indicating fingering an …
