My Specialties: My passion is classical music, however, I realize that the students' interests are diverse, so, I teach pieces they request which include easy fun Pop Music, Hymns, Boogie, Rock, Country and other contemporary pieces.
My Education: At an early age, I took a great interest in music, so my older sister who is four years older than I taught me what she learned in her piano lessons. She also taught me music theory. At the age of 12-14 my parents sent me to private piano lessons. My piano teacher at that time eventually told me that I needed to find a new teacher because she had taught me all she knew. After that, I approached a well known Julliard Master in town. He took me on as a student after he heard me play the Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata in C minor. I learned through Arthur Fiddler's comment made in the newspaper that Mr. Chang, my teacher, in his opinion was the best piano teacher in Hawaii. Under Mr. Changâs tutelage, I was exposed to a variety of classical pieces written by famous composers of the 15th to 18th centuries. At the age of 14, I made my first piano recital debut. My piano teacher was impressed with my talent and expressed his wish for me to pursue music and enter into Julliard. But, my parents being immigrants from Korea, did not think it was a good choice of career. So, I went into nursing instead, much to the consternation of my piano teacher. In 2001, I made a career change and found my passion for music revived again. I started teaching piano as well as taking Music Theory courses at a community college and taking lessons from a Julliard- Peabody master as well lessons from a Curtis Institute master. I continue taking piano lesson even now while I give piano lessons to beginner and intermediate students.
*** Lesson Details ***
In my piano studio, besides just learning to actually play the piano, students will engage in flashcard drills, writing work, and other activities to strengthen their overall knowledge of music. This will prepare them well for continued study in piano, for playing other instruments or singing, and for enjoying music in general. As an incentive to practice, our studio awards each week piano dollars for the time each student practices during the week. At the end of the year, we have an auction that the children could participate in using their piano dollars to purchase items.
In first the lesson the concepts stressed include:
1. Hand position and posture at the piano.
2. Right hand , left hand, and how the fingers are numbered.
3. Direction on the keyboard
4. The pattern of keys on the key board
In the first year of piano study, the concepts covered are:
1. Theory: identify steps, skips, and repeats; write and recognize 2nd -5ths intervals; sharp and flat signs; identify key signatures
2. Rhythms: whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, and dotted notes.
3. Technique: correct hand position; curved fingers, down âup wrist for phrasing, legato/staccato touch, penta scales; major chords and voicing (balance of hands) 5-finger melodies; single line melodies divided between hands; note-against-note playing, some melody/chord playing.
4. Repertoire: A Dozen A Day by Edna-Mae Burmae Books; Five-finger melodies by Faber Faber; Famous & Fun Pop Books by Carol Matz ; Boogie, Rock & Country Level 1 by James Bastien; Alfredâs Basic Adult Piano Course Lesson Book Level One for adult beginners.
In addition to lessons each student is required to participate in an annual piano recital to give them experience and confidence in performance.

As a teacher, I fully believe that you don't have to want to be a professional singer in order to want voice lessons. I love teaching students who simply love music and want to be better at it. E
*Note about my apartment: I teach lessons in my home, and I have a pet kitten. She's extremely friendly and would love nothing more than to bask in your attention, but if you'd prefer not to be around her or you are allergic, it's no problem at all. I'm happy to make sure she's kept in a different room during your lesson. All you have to do is let me know before your lesson that you'd prefer not to be around her, and you won't see her at all.

Went through a couple drummers then went our separate ways not even a year in. Since then, I’ve been playing as a solo musician but also playing in worship bands. I also have had opportunities to duet with people live sporadically. From 2011-2012, I recorded an album entitled “Wouldlawn, Couldlawn, Shouldlawn.” I named it that because I lived in an area called Woodlawn and my dad used to say the album’s title as a joke.

I graduated from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University with a Masters in Oboe Performance in 2016. I additionally hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance as well as a Teaching Certificate from the Peabody Conservatory. During my time at Peabody, I studied under Jane Marvine, English Horn of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
While studying at Peabody, my passion for music education was ignited and I really enjoyed exploring the development of my skills and resources both as a classroom and studio teacher. It is my personal mission to enrich students through music education while still having fun and learning to apply skills learned in music to other areas of life.
I am currently the Operations Manager with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Previously, I have held administrative positions with cultural organizations such as the Baltimore Choral Arts Society and the New York Philharmonic. I have been on both sides of the music industry and classroom, so I know what it takes to become a professional musician, and take a nuanced pedagogical approach to help each student achieve their goals in a way that suits them individually - no two students are the same! I believe each student should have a strong fundamental layer in technique and understanding of music theory, but should also focus on having fun while playing music, otherwise, what is the point?

The early 2000’s put me on an entirely new learning curve; I study recording, mixing, and mastering. By 2010 with the advances in digital recording technology musicians / bands began making demo recordings from small computer based home studios. Many small pro-recording studios closed during this time including my own.
In summer of 2010 I was looking over Pat Metheny’s website and noticed he named the top four guitarists in NYC, in his opinion. Subsequent to reviewing each guitarist’s website and music I found Rez Abbasi’s playing and music too interesting and enticing to forget. I emailed Rez about studying jazz composition with him and now in 2018 I’m still going up to NYC few times a year to study composition and guitar.
Being exposed to musicians at the level of Rez Abbasi, Sandole, and Giordano continues to nourish my musical life. I now know what it takes to master the guitar and be successful. It is this knowledge and love of creating music which has become my life's journey.
The opportunity to transform the piano into more than a box with black and white buttons, but rather, a device capable of communicating every human emotion in limitless ways, that is, if our physical bodies are up to the task.
Let me explain:
As a musician who takes great care of his health through a wide-range of physical activities and sound (pun intended) nutrition, I'm a firm believer that playing the piano requires tremendous physical control, dexterity, and poise.
This notion is constantly proven true again and again when I give lessons to children and adults who are engaged in sports or any other physical training outside of studying music. Because they are in good shape, they can demand much more from their bodies. This instantly heightens their overall musicianship and individua
My approach to piano lessons simply put is: How do we form as close a physical bond as possible between the instrument and student? In terms of piano, I acheive this goal by training the student's hands to move; in the best way; in the right way; in the most healthiest way; in an athletic way.
Now, you *do not* have to be an athlete to see results. My point is= I take an athletic position in terms of teaching piano.
I fully understand music theory, chords, scales and rhythm. So does every other teacher.
What other teachers *do not know* is: How to teach students of any age how best to move at the piano.
This specifically is what seperates me from 99 percent of piano teachers.
Overall point= If we did not have a body with which to move, we would not be able to make any music at all. So on a fundamental level, your body is the first thing that needs to be trained when learning a new instrument.
