Hi, I'm Heather. I’m from a small town in Harford County, MD, called Abingdon. It’s really close to Baltimore, MD which is about 15 minutes away from Abingdon. I live with my husband and two bunnies. I’m an R.N. with a bachelors degree in Nursing and 16 years of training in music by masters of Curtis Institute, Julliard, and Peabody Conservatory. I have been teaching piano for over 12 years. In 2001, I had a diversion of career from nursing and I absolutely fell in love with the idea of teaching piano and I started giving piano lessons. I love playing my Masan & Hamlin grand piano for personal pleasure, and I spend a lot of time practicing for different occasions. I h’ve played in over twenty piano recitals, and for numerous other occasions such as in Weddings , Funerals and in Choir accompaniments.

My Specialties: My passion is classical music, however, I realize that the students'€™ interests are diverse, so, I teach pieces they request which include easy fun Pop Music, Hymns, Boogie, Rock, Country and other contemporary pieces.
My Education: At an early age, I took a great interest in music, so my older sister who is four years older than I taught me what she learned in her piano lessons. She also taught me music theory. At the age of 12-14 my parents sent me to private piano lessons. My piano teacher at that time eventually told me that I needed to find a new teacher because she had taught me all she knew. After that, I approached a well known Julliard Master in town. He took me on as a student after he heard me play the Beethoven'€™s Pathetique Sonata in C minor. I learned through Arthur Fiddler'€™s comment made in the newspaper that Mr. Chang, my teacher, in his opinion was the best piano teacher in Hawaii. Under Mr. Chang’s tutelage, I was exposed to a variety of classical pieces written by famous composers of the 15th to 18th centuries. At the age of 14, I made my first piano recital debut. My piano teacher was impressed with my talent and expressed his wish for me to pursue music and enter into Julliard. But, my parents being immigrants from Korea, did not think it was a good choice of career. So, I went into nursing instead, much to the consternation of my piano teacher. In 2001, I made a career change and found my passion for music revived again. I started teaching piano as well as taking Music Theory courses at a community college and taking lessons from a Julliard- Peabody master as well lessons from a Curtis Institute master. I continue taking piano lesson even now while I give piano lessons to beginner and intermediate students.

*** Lesson Details ***
In my piano studio, besides just learning to actually play the piano, students will engage in flashcard drills, writing work, and other activities to strengthen their overall knowledge of music. This will prepare them well for continued study in piano, for playing other instruments or singing, and for enjoying music in general. As an incentive to practice, our studio awards each week piano dollars for the time each student practices during the week. At the end of the year, we have an auction that the children could participate in using their piano dollars to purchase items.

In first the lesson the concepts stressed include:
1. Hand position and posture at the piano.
2. Right hand , left hand, and how the fingers are numbered.
3. Direction on the keyboard
4. The pattern of keys on the key board

In the first year of piano study, the concepts covered are:
1. Theory: identify steps, skips, and repeats; write and recognize 2nd -5ths intervals; sharp and flat signs; identify key signatures
2. Rhythms: whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, and dotted notes.
3. Technique: correct hand position; curved fingers, down –up wrist for phrasing, legato/staccato touch, penta scales; major chords and voicing (balance of hands) 5-finger melodies; single line melodies divided between hands; note-against-note playing, some melody/chord playing.
4. Repertoire: A Dozen A Day by Edna-Mae Burmae Books; Five-finger melodies by Faber Faber; Famous & Fun Pop Books by Carol Matz ; Boogie, Rock & Country Level 1 by James Bastien; Alfred’s Basic Adult Piano Course Lesson Book Level One for adult beginners.

In addition to lessons each student is required to participate in an annual piano recital to give them experience and confidence in performance.

I am a conservatory trained classical singer who has been performing professionally for eight years and teaching privately for five. I'm very comfortable teaching a wide variety of genres and tailor my teaching style entirely to a student's level of experience, goals, voice type, age and musical interests. In addition to teaching vocal technique and repertoire, I am very comfortable teaching essential musical skills such as sight singing and music theory.
As a performer, I have appeared with such companies as Washington National Opera, Baltimore Concert Opera, Lyric Opera Baltimore, The Art Song Preservation Society and Peabody Opera Theater.

As a teacher, I fully believe that you don't have to want to be a professional singer in order to want voice lessons. I love teaching students who simply love music and want to be better at it. E
ven though I'm a professional singer myself, I believe that the point should always be to enjoy singing, and whether your goal is to make money as a singer or to feel more confident doing karaoke (both real things that have brought students to me!), I want you to have fun doing it. I also want to show you that singing is a skill, and anyone can learn to do it.

*Note about my apartment: I teach lessons in my home, and I have a pet kitten. She's extremely friendly and would love nothing more than to bask in your attention, but if you'd prefer not to be around her or you are allergic, it's no problem at all. I'm happy to make sure she's kept in a different room during your lesson. All you have to do is let me know before your lesson that you'd prefer not to be around her, and you won't see her at all.

Lane was an amazing instructor. She is easy to talk to, and listens to the student. I learned so much during my time with her. I was very disappointed when she had to leave the school. Lane is extremely knowledgable, and makes learning fun. I hope our singing paths cross again!

I started playing guitar and singing when I was 13 when I got a Christmas present from my father. Learning covers for a few years, I eventually started writing my own music around age 16. I also competed in talent shows and sang at church during high school. When I was 18, my friends and I started a jam band.

Went through a couple drummers then went our separate ways not even a year in. Since then, I’ve been playing as a solo musician but also playing in worship bands. I also have had opportunities to duet with people live sporadically. From 2011-2012, I recorded an album entitled “Wouldlawn, Couldlawn, Shouldlawn.” I named it that because I lived in an area called Woodlawn and my dad used to say the album’s title as a joke.

This was all in my spare time, I was a waitress since age 19. I didn’t start playing music full time until
late 2013. Playing mostly in small bars, coffeehouses, and private events/parties. And in August 2016, I started teaching guitar. Took a total break from playing music.

To get back into the groove of things, I started my own by doing online concerts. I also started recording music videos for and doing social media lives. I still love to record and working on finishing an album.

I have only had one lesson with Rachel so far but I can already tell I made the best decision in selecting her as my instructor. She is very organized and has a clear plan for progression, starting with a deep understanding of the basics - posture, hand position, reading music, and music theory - then goes deeper into topics as you progress. What I also like that Rachel provides clear practice goals and exercises. Rachel is a top notch instructor.

Got my headstrong 10 year old daughter to love learning the guitar and look forward to her lessons. Adapted to a crazy schedule that allowed my daughter to continue her lessons online all the way in Tennessee. Rachel is amazing.

I am a performer, administrator, and arts advocate with an aim to inspire audiences in unconventional ways. A Native of Miami, Florida, I started my musical studies at the age of 12 and has been an active member of the Miami and Baltimore music scenes ever since. Since coming to Baltimore to study at the Peabody Conservatory in 2011, I have had the opportunity to perform with nearly every large ensemble in the school and have also performed in Yale's Norfolk Summer Music Festival, as faculty at the New York Summer Music festival during my time studying in conservatory, and with the Occasional Symphony. I regularly perform in the Baltimore/DC metro area as a freelance oboist and member of the contemporary chamber orchestra, Mind on Fire. I also have performed with the Columbia Orchestra, Classical Revolution Baltimore, and many other estee
med local organizations. I have also been featured as a woodwind clinician in Baltimore County and Howard County public schools classrooms and have been the oboe adjudicator for the middle and high school division of the Howard County Solo & Ensembles for the past three years.

I graduated from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University with a Masters in Oboe Performance in 2016. I additionally hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance as well as a Teaching Certificate from the Peabody Conservatory. During my time at Peabody, I studied under Jane Marvine, English Horn of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

While studying at Peabody, my passion for music education was ignited and I really enjoyed exploring the development of my skills and resources both as a classroom and studio teacher. It is my personal mission to enrich students through music education while still having fun and learning to apply skills learned in music to other areas of life.

I am currently the Operations Manager with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Previously, I have held administrative positions with cultural organizations such as the Baltimore Choral Arts Society and the New York Philharmonic. I have been on both sides of the music industry and classroom, so I know what it takes to become a professional musician, and take a nuanced pedagogical approach to help each student achieve their goals in a way that suits them individually - no two students are the same! I believe each student should have a strong fundamental layer in technique and understanding of music theory, but should also focus on having fun while playing music, otherwise, what is the point?

Outside of oboe I enjoy hiking with my dog, painting, yoga, and Cuban food.

Guitar haa been a love of mine since I was 14, when I first saw someone entertaining people at a party.

I began lessons for myself, at the age of 16. First I learned the basics and rock style music, and then I played and sang in some local Baltimore garage bands and in talent shows.

I went on to major in music in college, at Towson State University, with classical guitar as my concentration.

I began playing out professionally in my 20's, includings bars and restaurants like the Westminster Inn and at Fells Point, festivals like the Owings Mills Festival, weddings and parties.

Hello! My name is Zachary (or Zac for short) and I am a Baltimore-based brass performer and teacher. I have been playing euphonium and other brass instruments for 14 years. Currently, I am in my final year as a music education student at Towson University, where I study euphonium with US Navy musician James Hicks. In addition to euphonium, I am quite proficient on both trombone and tuba, and have taught trumpet and horn as well.

Currently, I play euphonium in the Towson University Symphonic Band and Towson University Tuba Euphonium Ensemble, trombone in a folk-rock style band, and am an avid solo artist. I also have two years of experience as a nationally touring member of the Troopers Drum & Bugle Corps. In addition to these experiences, I have performed with the Cadets2 Drum & Bugle Corps, the Baltimore Ravens Marching Band, and th

Zac taught me how to properly perform an aria in front of a whole lot of important people that I was stressed about. He gave me some excellent pointers on how to work with a pianist. His knowledge of music and his experience in performance has certainly shaped the way I perceive my own performances ever since that lesson.

As a musician, Zac is above and beyond talented. Because of his proficiency and excellence, he offers great insight and helpful hints on how to play properly and with support, two extremely important parts of being a musician. Lastly, it is quite obvious what music means to him. His passion is inspiring, and makes me want to continue to pursue and practice my instrument. His lessons helped me develop from a second part to a first part, enabling me to play higher and more challenging parts for my band. Knowing that I was able to leave better than I started makes myself feel lucky and appreciative that I was able to take lessons with a person like Zac. Overall, one of the best music instructors I have had the pleasure of working with.

I first studied guitar from Chuck Anderson a previous student of renown teacher Dennis Sandole. After two years with Anderson I began music studies with Sandole which lasted five years. I had no traditional schooling from a university in music, but instead believe private study with the best teacher was the path for me. I continued to gig, play all genres of music while maintaining my music studies. I decided in the late 1989 that moving to New York, although a desire, would never happen. And, with the decline of jazz-fusion and lack of jazz venues in my geographic area I knew my dream of making a living from jazz music was all but over. But this did not diminish my passion for playing and composing avant garde jazz-fusion music.

In the mid-nineties I met jazz guitarist and composer Steve Giordano. Steve had a completely different a
pproach to teaching and learning guitar then any of my previous teachers. This began three years of music study and friendship with Steve. After my time with Giordano I built a 1000 sq. ft. recording studio in the basement of my home and opened Genesis Recording Studio in 2001.

The early 2000’s put me on an entirely new learning curve; I study recording, mixing, and mastering. By 2010 with the advances in digital recording technology musicians / bands began making demo recordings from small computer based home studios. Many small pro-recording studios closed during this time including my own.

In summer of 2010 I was looking over Pat Metheny’s website and noticed he named the top four guitarists in NYC, in his opinion. Subsequent to reviewing each guitarist’s website and music I found Rez Abbasi’s playing and music too interesting and enticing to forget. I emailed Rez about studying jazz composition with him and now in 2018 I’m still going up to NYC few times a year to study composition and guitar.

Being exposed to musicians at the level of Rez Abbasi, Sandole, and Giordano continues to nourish my musical life. I now know what it takes to master the guitar and be successful. It is this knowledge and love of creating music which has become my life's journey.

What I enjoy most about teaching piano:

The opportunity to transform the piano into more than a box with black and white buttons, but rather, a device capable of communicating every human emotion in limitless ways, that is, if our physical bodies are up to the task.

Let me explain:

As a musician who takes great care of his health through a wide-range of physical activities and sound (pun intended) nutrition, I'm a firm believer that playing the piano requires tremendous physical control, dexterity, and poise.

This notion is constantly proven true again and again when I give lessons to children and adults who are engaged in sports or any other physical training outside of studying music. Because they are in good shape, they can demand much more from their bodies. This instantly heightens their overall musicianship and individua
l artistic expression.

My approach to piano lessons simply put is: How do we form as close a physical bond as possible between the instrument and student? In terms of piano, I acheive this goal by training the student's hands to move; in the best way; in the right way; in the most healthiest way; in an athletic way.

Now, you *do not* have to be an athlete to see results. My point is= I take an athletic position in terms of teaching piano.

I fully understand music theory, chords, scales and rhythm. So does every other teacher.

What other teachers *do not know* is: How to teach students of any age how best to move at the piano.

This specifically is what seperates me from 99 percent of piano teachers.

Overall point= If we did not have a body with which to move, we would not be able to make any music at all. So on a fundamental level, your body is the first thing that needs to be trained when learning a new instrument.
