David enjoys teaching ukulele to beginner and intermediate students. Whether you are just starting out or you've been playing for a while, he is happy to teach you! Over all, he is fairly laid back, as long as you practice. He teaches chord formations and strum patterns, along with learning specific songs the student would like to learn.

David is also very pro music theory. He usually incorporates music theory into the curriculum in conjunction with the material already being discussed. He is also very knowledgeable about composition/songwriting, and if the student is interested in learning more about this area, he is happy to share what he knows!

About David

David is a successful singer/songwriter/guitarist out of Fairfax, VA. He has a bachelor's degree in Music with a concentration in composition from Salisbury University, where he also studied jazz and classical guitar . In the 25 years he has been performing (20 of those professionally) and playin

This class is intended for those who have never played a `ukulele, a beginner or continuing student. Yao will learn how to hold, tune, and play the `ukulele for sing-alongs. Basic theory such as rhythmic values (whole, half, quarter, eighth notes), time signatures, etc. will be introduced. You should be able to play several different basic strumming styles, read and understand `ukulele chord charts, transpose songs into other keys, and play along to a large selection of songs, or play at least one song all the way through!

For intermediate students, you will work on more advanced arrangements of songs, strumming styles, increase your chord vocabulary and generally gain a greater knowledge of the `ukulele. You will also learn how to read tablature to play simple melody lines. It will help if you are familiar with the following music theory concepts: key signature (especially the keys of C, F, and G), time signature (3/4, 4/4 and 6/8), and rhythmic values including whole, half, ...

So far so good. Very patient as mistakes after mistake was made. Corrected quite a few mistakes I was making so that my habits would be good habits from the start. Let me talk to myself as I messed up and complimented me when I was on the right track.

I find ukulele to often work better than guitar for many young students (typically years 10 and younger). When appropriate, the student can transition to guitar having increased hand strength and learned many of the concepts needed to excel. Of course, ukulele makes for a fun (and ultra-portable) instrument in its own right!

I studied classical guitar and composition at Asbury College and later more in depth guitar studies rock, jazz, and classical at the Atlanta Institute of Music. "Where to start about Kat??? She is simply incredible, kind, patient, caring, encouraging, creative, and did I mention she’s patient πŸ˜‰
I’ve wanted to learn to play an instrument since I was a kid (I’m 45 now) and I was always too busy to do it, but at 44 life decided it was time to put everything aside and battle leukemia. The chemotherapy, unfortunately caused neuropathy issues in my hands and feet and my sweet husband trying to find ways to strengthen my hands and fingers, gifted me a set of Ukulele lessons with Kat, and he couldn’t have chosen anyone better. Kat recorded the sweetest birthday message for me, which my husband shared when he gave me my gift 😍. I was so touched and emotional. Knowing that I had lots of restrictions to go out of my house, Kat automatically offered to come to my house to do my lessons. She is amazing!!! Thank you KatπŸ™πŸ½"

Kamaka Vs. Martin Ukulele: Pros & Cons for Uke Students

When you enter the market to buy yourself a new (or used) ukulele there are many factors to take into account: size of the uke, the type of woods used, the level of craftsmanship, and most importantly the price you’ll pay to get your hands on it. In doing your research, the most important thing to start off with is your price cap. Are you looking for the cheapest uke you can find, which would be anywhere from $20-40?
