I've been teaching in both group and individual violin lessons for the past 15 years. I have my Doctor of Music degree from Indiana University while I was teaching 10-12 college level students there for three years and taught at El Sistema program for kids, age between 7-17 for two years.
I started to learn violin at the age of 14 and as I struggled throuh the learning experience, I can understand and relate to each and every students' unique challenge. I have few retired music lovers starting to learn violin and they have shown me a fresh look to appreciation of music and violin playing. Here is one of my students’ review of my teaching!

“Just by listening to her I think I was already her student. She changed my “set up” to facilitate better technique and took me back to basics. She taught how to practice with specific goals, to keep a daily log of goals, to draw the bow with intention, to know what sounds I wanted before I made a sound, and to sing the music before I played it. ...

"The best music teacher!!

My 11-year-old son has been taking violin lessons with Travis for a couple months now and loves it! Travis always has a smile on his face, comes on time, and is professional. My son had zero experience with this instrument before; so it was important for me to find a teacher who is patient, and Travis definitely is. He has a good sense for when his students are ready for a little push or need some extra attention in some spots. I highly recommend him!"

"Mary is very knowledgeable and personable. She gives excellent instruction and gentle correction in a way that makes you want to do your best in every aspect of the learning process. Mary is also very attentive to your needs and your development as a student. She knows when to allow for the errors that a beginner like myself will make, and when to present challenges that will push you, and show you that your skill and talent are growing. She also gives homework assignments that will help you grow your talent when you're in between lessons, which I really appreciate. I absolutely recommend Mary to anyone wishing to take music lessons!"

"Yakov Dyman has all the qualities necessary for teaching children, piano and violin. He is a disciplined craftsman, has a love for music and teaching and, most important, is able to transfer a passion for music to his students. My daughter had some rudimentary knowledge of the violin when she began to study with Yakov just over a year ago. Today she has good tonality, she practices with enthusiasm everyday and impresses friends and family playing pieces unexpected considering the short time she has been studying. The same is true of her bother on piano.
We feel, through Yakov's artistry, he inspires the kids to approach their music as musicians, not just music students."

"I highly recommend Grace. When i was younger, I mastered a variety of musical instruments and played well into college. Learning the violin has always been elusive. I’ve had many teachers but now i’ve been progressing farther than before. I credit this to Grace. She has a well thought out lesson plan that challenges me while concentrating on the fundamentals and techniques. Some teachers are more forgiving on technique reasoning that it can be corrected at a later date. It’s best to learn it correctly at the beginning.
She is patient and communicates clearly. I enjoy her proper demonstrations. Her enthusiam is infectuous and her passion shines through.
She also teaches my 80 year old mother. It has always been somthing she’s always wanted to learn. It is not easy to teach anyone the violin, let alone an 80 year old. Her lesson plan and approach is quite different to mine but very effective. My mother is progressing well.
Among her teaching aids, she employs a traditional strings book, i find this comforting as it provides a familiar take and consistency. Before moving on, she checks and ensures proficiency and mastery of the previous lessons. Again, reinforcing the fundamentals and building on top of them.
Understandably, the price per lesson is a factor. I find Grace’s rates to be fair and of great value. If you really want to learn and have the violin be a part of your life, hire Grace because of her approach and skill and not based on pricing.
Without knowing much of what to look for in a teacher, i now know its; enthusiam, patience, undertanding, a well defined lesson plan, mastery of skills before moving forward, consistency, open communication and lastly, not taking excuses for sloppiness due to lack of practice. (She will encourage you to practice and you’ll get better which in-turn motivates you). She will not just let you get by but help you master the violin."
