Alexandra is everything you could ever want in a first-rate teacher: she is inspiring, devoted, nurturing, exciting, knowledgeable, a fierce advocate for her students - the list goes on and on. However, what makes Alexandra truly remarkable is her almost magical ability to instantly spark intrinsic motivation - and a love of music - in all of her students. If you are looking to learn from a truly life-changing teacher, look no further than Alexandra Perdew-Bhatt.

Alexandra has met all my expectations. She is very patient. I feel like we are moving along at a good pace. I had zero musical experience and after only 3 lessons can read basic sheet music and actually have music come out of the piano!! I am enjoying the whole process.

Great first lesson! Looking forward to next week.

Music theory is the basic foundation for every good composer and songwriter. There's a lot to learn and a lot that can be used in your own music. Even if you only want to play guitar and not write music, music theory can help you be a better improvisor, increase your harmonic knowledge, and play better in group settings.

About Jeremie

I'm a self taught guitarist who has been playing for 20 years. I have played professionally in numerous bands and ensembles ranging from jazz to folk to rock, and I've been writing music for the same length of time. I currently perform with one of my students from TakeLessons named Mackenzie O'Brien

Jeremie was calm and very supportive for this beginner. I have made progress over the first week. As with any instrument, practice is the key. He gave me the tools to do so.

As a harpsichordist and Baroque improviser, I am always thinking in the language of music theory. My knowledge of theory comes not only in my classically-rooted musical craft, but also from the fine collegiate education I received as an alumni of some of the nation's top conservatories. My lessons are conversational, engaging, and individually-tailored to suit each student's specific goals and reasons for leaning music theory. Subjects typically begin with reading staff notation and general understanding of keys, scales, interval, and harmony, and can end anywhere from four-part counterpoint, post-tonal theory, or the analysis of pop music. I am comfortable teaching all subjects in classical music theory, and dearly love doing so!

Note: I am not a part of the CM, RCM, or ABRSM organizations, but I am qualified in preparing students for the tests and have experience teaching the curriculum materials.

About Yunyi

Nice to meet you! My name is Yunyi and I am a classical pianist and harpsichordist. I have been playing piano for 18 years and teaching since 2012. I believe that the art of music is not simply a skill to be learned, but a pursuit that invokes curiosity, inspiration, perseverance, logic, and pass

We went with online piano lessons at the moment due to COVID, but I was nervous about the format as the lessons are for my five-year-old daughter, so I was concerned the additional technology would be an impediment. Dr. Merkel was wonderful. He was friendly and encouraging to my daughter, ensuring she knew she could ask any questions she might have at any point. He absolutely made the technology work for us, and my daughter learned more than I would have thought possible in 30 minutes. She is counting down to her next lesson!

David is a great tutor and teacher! He helped me to understand the basic fundamentals of music theory and how to develop the skills to be able to practice it at home. "I had the pleasure and honor of being one of his students in Mexico City while I was in music college. He's a very disciplined teacher (never missed a class) and he has complete dominion over the subjects he teaches. Roberto's not only an amazing guitarist but he has a unique way of teaching music theory and history that makes you quite familiar with the different approaches to music over the different ages. He also shows a legitimate interest over his students, he challenges then and even owns when he's pointed out mistakes by them. During my time as his student I also realized that he was quite respected by the other professors. Fair warning: he can be a little sarcastic but he means no offense whatsoever to his students and fellow musicians."

"Shon Morgan is absolutely the greatest most talented musician and music teacher I have ever had the privilege of learning from and playing music with. I am a drummer/guitarist/vocalist. We did some touring gigs together in our earlier years and he was already amazing back then. He sat down and taught me the circle of fifths off the top of his head in one conversation. I learned so much just playing along side him. So not only is he an amazing player, but he is also very well suited and experienced as a teacher. He is the most knowledgeable musically but patient and kind personally. He plays and teaches multiple instruments and vocals really well but he stands out tremendously on bass guitar! You can not go wrong having Shon Morgan as your teacher, period!"

Understanding Music Theory Through Colors

Struggling to understand a music theory concept? Sometimes, all it takes is a tweak to the way material is taught for a student to really grasp it. You listen, wipe their tears and tell them “Tomorrow is a new day,” and “I know you can do it!” But the next day he or she comes home upset about th …

Why You Should Learn (At Least a Little) Music Theory

One of the most common weaknesses for amateur musicians is a lack of music theory knowledge. Many people assume that learning theory is difficult (it isn’t) that it has no practical purpose (it does), or even that it will actively make them worse at making music (quite the opposite). I’m here to convince you that learning a little about how music works is one of the most important skills you can develop and should absolutely be part of your daily practice routine. Here are five reasons w …
