Music theory is the basic foundation for every good composer and songwriter. There's a lot to learn and a lot that can be used in your own music. Even if you only want to play guitar and not write music, music theory can help you be a better improvisor, increase your harmonic knowledge, and play better in group settings.
About Jeremie
I'm a self taught guitarist who has been playing for 20 years. I have played professionally in numerous bands and ensembles ranging from jazz to folk to rock, and I've been writing music for the same length of time. I currently perform with one of my students from TakeLessons named Mackenzie O'Brien

As a harpsichordist and Baroque improviser, I am always thinking in the language of music theory. My knowledge of theory comes not only in my classically-rooted musical craft, but also from the fine collegiate education I received as an alumni of some of the nation's top conservatories. My lessons are conversational, engaging, and individually-tailored to suit each student's specific goals and reasons for leaning music theory. Subjects typically begin with reading staff notation and general understanding of keys, scales, interval, and harmony, and can end anywhere from four-part counterpoint, post-tonal theory, or the analysis of pop music. I am comfortable teaching all subjects in classical music theory, and dearly love doing so!
Note: I am not a part of the CM, RCM, or ABRSM organizations, but I am qualified in preparing students for the tests and have experience teaching the curriculum materials.

I’m here to convince you that learning a little about how music works is one of the most important skills you can develop and should absolutely be part of your daily practice routine. Here are five reasons w …
