My methods vary from student to student. I focus primarily on ear training, applications of chord construction to learning solo's, songs, and chords, and reading guitar tablature when a student is lost. I believe guitar is an especially creative instrument and do NOT focus on reading sheet music as a part of the student's learning experience. An emphasis is also placed on performance as well as proper technique to avoid injuries. Listening to music is an extra-curricular activity that should be done every day with a special emphasis on hearing what the 'greats' do with a magnificent piece of wood in their hands.

About Greg

I have been playing guitar for over 14 years, played in four different gigging bands ranging from country to jazz to improvisational funk. I taught music theory, guitar, and bass at M.E.A. Music in Lexington Park, Maryland for 3 years and currently teach and manage at the School of Rock in Arnold.

I've been playing guitar on and off (mostly off) for the past 15 years. I came to Daniel to learn music theory, improve my rhythm, and learn the skills I need to confidently show up to a jam session with other musicians. In just a few lessons, I've significantly improved in each of those areas at Daniel's instruction. He REALLY knows his stuff and quickly hones in on your strengths/weaknesses and has great advice for how to improve on your weaknesses.

If you are looking for a guy that can teach you the basics of how to play an instrument, or someone that can take you from just learning songs online to being able to create your own songs and jam with other musicians, Daniel is your guy.
Adam Z.
I started taking fiddle lessons with Daniel having basically zero experience with the instrument, and in just a handful of weeks, I can't believe how much I've learned! Daniel really excels at tailoring his teaching to my individual needs, interests, and pace of learning. Each week I leave feeling challenged and motivated, but never frustrated. I'm having a great time, and always look forward to my next lesson.
Michelle B.
Daniel is so patient and easy to work with ~ he makes learning the cello seem so easy and natural and has so many practical ways of explaining an instrument I have no prior knowledge of. I had never played a stringed instrument but always loved the cello, so I was a bit nervous to begin. His gentle nature and patience have made me even more enthusiastic to learn. I have been loving each lesson and look forward to the next each time I leave! I'm looking forward to next week already! :-)

Very professional during lessons, relaxed energy, specific with explaining concepts. Would recommend for anyone looking to improve musicianship.
James Feldman
Phil is a fantastic instructor. I am a beginner bass player, interested in learning rock and roll style music. Phil has been able to not only teach me all the classic songs that I love, but also improve my understanding of music theory in the process. In addition to this, Phil is very knowledgeable when it comes to recording music and playing in a live band, and he has shared many insights and personal experiences that have helped inspire me to keep pushing even when I am struggling with a simple bass part. I have seen major improvement in my playing ever since I started working with Phil. I would highly recommend Phil to students of all ages and levels: he is the ultimate professional, and on top of that a stand up guy!

7 Easy Bluegrass Songs on Guitar

Even beginners can start playing a little bluegrass guitar. Music teacher Matthew K. shares a selection of his favorite easy bluegrass guitar songs... When I first listened to bluegrass music, I knew I had to learn the guitar parts. They are very intricate and fun! The patterns weave in and out of each other, creating a sound that is unique to the genre. It can be a daunting sound for any beginner - and it may seem impossible at first - but remember, everyone has to start at the beginning …
