My methods vary from student to student. I focus primarily on ear training, applications of chord construction to learning solo's, songs, and chords, and reading guitar tablature when a student is lost. I believe guitar is an especially creative instrument and do NOT focus on reading sheet music as a part of the student's learning experience. An emphasis is also placed on performance as well as proper technique to avoid injuries. Listening to music is an extra-curricular activity that should be done every day with a special emphasis on hearing what the 'greats' do with a magnificent piece of wood in their hands.

About Greg

I have been playing guitar for over 14 years, played in four different gigging bands ranging from country to jazz to improvisational funk. I taught music theory, guitar, and bass at M.E.A. Music in Lexington Park, Maryland for 3 years and currently teach and manage at the School of Rock in Arnold.

I play and teach nylon-string guitar and steel-string acoustic guitar. I specialize in finger-style classical guitar, jazz, and folk, but I also have a background in rock, bluegrass, blues, soul, pop, Hawaiian, Celtic music and more. I always start lessons with new students by getting to know what music they love to play and listen to, and I will develop my lessons accordingly.

If you have experience with guitar, I will probably ask you to demonstrate your skill level by playing a song you know. If you are picking up guitar for the first time, the first lessons will be devoted to learning correct posture and technique, and you will begin playing your first scales, exercises, and open chords.
After a few lessons, you will begin to learn your first melodies and repertoire.

After a few weeks, our lessons will likely take several different, but parallel trajectories. You will learn to play the lead melodies to songs as well as play the rhythmic accompaniment. This will involve ...

"I’ve been trying to teach myself guitar from online videos and just started taking lessons with Nick. It’s making a huge difference. He’s worked on my posture, left and right hand positions, started me on basic ear training, sight reading and understanding of rhythm. He’s given me exercises to help with chord changes I’ve been struggling with. Nick’s a great musician who loves to play but also loves to teach, so a beginner with no music training can gain from his knowledge. He’s a kind, patient teacher and an enjoyable person to spend time with. My guitar playing sounds better already."

"Why would anyone defame such a wonderful teacher? He is so dedicated and follows through with his lessons by consistently sending links all through the week that helps with understanding all you need to know about musical sounds. Its been an intriguing experience for me. Pay no attention to anonymous critics; they choose to remain anonymous not to help you, but to help themselves. I would recommend James to anyone seriously interested in honing their skills in the acoustic guitar. Cheers!"

"I have been taking lessons with Remi for a few months now. I was initially impressed with how he tailored the lessons just for me and my particular skill level and background (I had just started learning guitar but am an experienced musician). Now that I'm a few months in, I'm even happier with his approach and the results it helps me achieve. He is patient, and always gives the impression that he is there to help me do what I want to do. His choices of material for each lesson build on the preceding ones, and because of what he's given me to learn, I've been able to learn a couple of dozen other songs outside of what I'm learning within the structure of the lessons. I highly recommend Remi for anyone learning guitar. If you put in the time, his guidance will provide that extra edge you need so move forward and play well."
