Hey there – I am so glad that you want to study bass guitar! I would love to help you find and hone your unique personality as a bassist. Whether that is through developing good instincts for constructing parts and grooves, building healthy technique that works for your body and prevents injuries, or even working on your original music, I'm here to be your ally for all things bass. A little bit about me: I am a graduate of the world-renowned jazz program at the Jacobs School of Music and have been teaching for 8 years. I have experience with many styles and genres and have been fortunate to play with artists from over 20 countries. My work has been featured in NPR’s Jazz Critic’s Poll, Jazziz Magazine, and All About Jazz, and I was recently chosen to be a cultural ambassador for the U.S. State Department’s global music fellowship (OneBeat). In other words, we can work together on whatever music really lights you up, no matter the style! Hip-hop, metal, samba, punk...nothing is off the

Hannah is fantastic! She adeptly engages and teaches my two kiddos (7 and 10) and husband (40ish :)

Hannah has a rare ability to combine an incredible warmth with a wealth of exercises for improvement. The exercises were truly specifically directed toward the student. In my son’s case, he said this first lesson was also the first time he felt emotionally connected to the upright bass the same was he has in the past with piano and voice. He’s truly an emotionally connected person when it comes to music, yet he’s also a very quick thinker and Hannah could tell when he was able to hold multiple ideas at once. She also acknowledged his joy when it did come. There was a lot of technical knowledge he needed that were holes in instruction and Hannah sussed them out and somehow knew - even though the lesson was online - she knew his cues where it was time to move on or switch things up, or perhaps to add something. I cannot wait to hear the improved sound coming from my son’s right hand technique, now possessing depth and lovely tone that I knew he had in him, but knew also he needed the right instructor to draw out. We are so grateful Hannah is now in our lives in the role of a teacher and hopefully will become a mentor and another adult to look toward for balancing the discipline and enthusiasm music can bring to human beings.

At first I was skeptical about taking online lessons, but I love taking lessons with Hannah. I'm a classical bassist starting to learn jazz, and Hannah is providing exactly what I was hoping for in starting my jazz career. The first lesson we went over what my goals are, and she is providing me with exactly the tools that I need to progress. Every week she sends me a personalized document of what we went over in lessons, what I should focus on in the coming week, and music resources (exercises, jazz charts, etc) to utilize! She is patient, kind, knowledgeable in both technique and theory, and pushes me every lesson.

"Mark is a fantastic instructor, he is super patient and understanding with my complete lack of knowledge about anything guitar related. Would recommend Mark to anybody starting out, or anybody experienced. He has a wealth of knowledge about music, music history and guitars. He keeps the lessons interesting and fun, while also challenging."

"Mark is an amazing guitar teacher! He is really patient when it comes to teaching me but he is also an amazing guitarist and is always teaching me new stuff. I would definitely recommend him as a teacher. As a beginner, I was slightly hesitant to take up the guitar but I'm really glad I found him as a teacher because I see how much I'm improving each week - only because of his guidance and expertise!"

I teach electric bass in various styles and genres. I always start lessons with new students by getting to know what music they love to play and listen to, and I will develop subsequent lessons accordingly.

If you have experience with the bass, I will probably ask you to demonstrate your still level in our first lesson. If you are picking up bass for the first time, the first lessons will be devoted to learning correct posture and technique. You will also begin playing your first scales and stretching exercises. After a few lessons, you will begin to learn to your first melodies and repertoire.

After a few weeks, you will begin to learn how to create and improvise your own bass lines by playing root notes and outlining chords.

As you progress further, I will begin to incorporate music theory into our lessons. For my own study, I have always found it helpful to know how things work—how certain chords and melodies move and resonate with us and why others don’t. Therefore, ...

I've been a musician all of my life. I have a music education degree and have performed in professional ensembles. I've played bass guitar in a funk rock band, covering many Red Hot Chili Peppers songs, as well as others from the 90's.

I currently focus my energy on the acoustic guitar, however I feel very comfortable playing and teaching introductory and intermediate skills on the bass, including techniques in finger picking and slap bass techniques.

Curriculum will include technique, styles discussion, songs, and performance.

About Joshua

I am a tutor who earned a music teaching degree, substitute taught, and didn't become a school teacher. I held professional tech retail jobs and am supplementing my life with my passion - education. Whatever subject or instrument I teach, I celebrate students' successes; and I enjoy helping lear

"There are musicians who teach on the side, but Calvin is not only a talented musician, but has a real talent for teaching as well. He tailor-made the lessons towards the skills I wanted to develop. He knows how to direct the student to just the right practice method to improve on a particular skill. Calvin is patient, positive, and encouraging, and takes the time to explain anything the student does not understand. Overall, Calvin is a great music teacher who truly cares about his students learning their instrument. I wouldn't hesitate recommending Calvin to anyone."

"Collin was actually an employee of my music studio before he moved to Philadelphia. He is an extremely knowledgable and talented bass player, well versed in all aspects of contemporary music including blues and especially jazz. He is also a consummate music theory instructor and is able to teach voice, piano, guitar, and trombone very capably. With his calm, gentle demeanor, Collin is able to put any student of any age at ease and help them to do their musical best! He is well organized and tailors an individual program for every student, being sure to include their musical interests, and then helping them to expand their musical world, I highly recommend him as a teacher!"

"Dustin Newbold began teaching my son guitar lessons when my son was 10 years old and continued for the past 6 years. He taught him to play the electric guitar, the acoustic and then the bass guitar. Dustin taught him tabs, chords and reading music. He became affluent in each of them.

My daughter began taking violin lessons with Dustin and then took trumpet lessons. She progressed so much in such a short amount of time.

Dustin has a tremendous love for music and is such a talented musician. His love for music is apparent and quickly spread to both of my children. He chooses music that they like to play and that keeps their interest and causes them to practice without prompting. I have always been amazed at how quickly they advanced with their talent and knowledge and how much they enjoyed going to their lessons. My only regret is that he moved away from our area. I would highly recommend Dustin Newbold to anyone of any age seeking to begin learning a musical instrument or advancing in their own personal knowledge."
