About Dennis

I have been teaching guitar for 25 years in the Washington DC metro area. I work with students 12 years of age and up, but I am especially experienced at teaching adult students regardless of whether they are beginners or have previous guitar experience. This was my first ever guitar lesson and I thought it was a blast. The instructor took the time to explain best practices and why they were so important. I also really enjoyed seeing the instructor's passion for the guitar and that passion made the whole experience even better!

Dennis is a fabulous teacher! I took lessons for 2 (?) years from him in high school, entering with decent knowledge of music from other instruments but only beginner-intermediate guitar skills from self-teaching and guitar class in school (what a joke). From the very start he adjusted to my level, asking me to play something I knew and identifying the chords that I had (unknowingly) played, and creating an exercise for me to practice new chords at home. Lessons were nothing but fun and informative; Dennis is a great conversationalist and incredibly knowledgeable about music theory. His lessons are full of variety: scales (different positions and modes), progressions (written on the spot by Dennis), improvisation (with live accompaniment), transcriptions (of your favorite songs), and learning from the book. Looking back, I progressed immensely under Dennis’s tutelage, from barely playing barre chords to writing my own music in different modes! It certainly doesn’t hurt that Dennis treats his students as equals, and that his home is always welcoming. He’s invested, not the type of teacher to chase you off once your “time’s up.” If I hadn’t gone off to college, I’d still be taking lessons from him for sure! Highly recommend to anyone who is looking for enjoyable, enriching guitar lessons.

Dennis has a great comprehensive approach to teaching guitar. He helps you understand the nuances of the instrument, and provides specific instruction based on your individual needs. He has a wealth of experience and knowledge, and shares anecdotes about those experiences to help better understand topics relevant to your own personal pursuit of improved playing.

Even if you aren't sure exactly what you want to get out of lessons, Dennis is quick to provide material that will help you improve your skills. They are laid out in a clear way and act as a great resource to add to your collection of practice material.

I'm happy I took lessons with Dennis, and others should definitely work with him if looking for a laid back atmosphere and a steady pace of improvement and understanding.

As a singer-songwriter with well over 300 live shows across the country - I know performance. I've played in all kinds of venues from coffee shops, colleges, house shows, rock clubs and historic theaters.

Up-level your craft by getting a lesson with me on what to expect when you're about to play a show. What to do and what NOT to do. The right frame of mind, etc! I've learned through so much experience, trial and error. Every show (and every practice, really) is an experience to learn from.

I can help take your songs from the bedroom to the next-level with some live performance guidance and strategy from my decades of experience.

Just wow. 60 minutes in and Richard already showed me how to easily play the scale of every key, and half of all of the types of chords (from diminished to ma6 chords). Amazing and insightful compositional techniques were just casually included. I'm blown away and couldn't recommend him more.

"Awesome teacher

I'm a violinist and teacher myself; Cecilia has helped me a lot with my playing and teaching skills, improving my technique and showing me new tricks. She has a natural flair to help you have fun with what you're doing, and classes are even better with her. She keeps you motivated and knows how to keep a clear view of the objective you want to reach, and how to reach them with clear and simple concepts. Cecilia’s helped me a lot with my posture and playing tension free, which has improved immensely the sound of my music. You shouldn’t miss out on this opportunity of having classes with her. Strongly recommended."

"Quite Simply The Best.

With all of the music teachers in LA and the world, it is difficult to choose the best. With Fawn, I believe 100% that I have found the best. She is well educated, well rounded and versed in all the musical styles, up on the latest musical trends, yet knows the composers, songwriters and vocalists of yesteryears. She is passionate, fun, compassionate, patient, loving, kind and has a college degree from the 2 top music schools in the world. She has a thorough understanding of music theory, performance, voice, piano and the many ins and outs of the music industry. She is able to teach her students the theory behind the songs they are learning to play, sing, write and record. She is great at sharing the musical journey with her students, guiding them with honesty, tender care and knowledge. My daughter has grown leaps and bounds with Fawn and absolutely loves her. She’s helped change her voice into her authentic voice, taught her how to get over stage fright, how to turn her poems into song lyrics and how to produce her own vocals in the recording studio. She is quite simply, the best."

"Melanie A. is an extraordinary teacher!

Of the many music teachers out there, I would have to say that Melanie is one with a unique ability to get students from any background to really understand what it is they need to and learn. To begin, Melanie's upbeat and bright, but professional personality is one that easily clicks with all types of students, making it easy to learn. She is so patient and kind, but just strict enough to get us to do what we need to do. I have seen her sing several times and her great vocal talents and stage performances allow her to give honest, professional, and needed pointers that help students improve (but never in a harsh way). I personally observed this from our band sessions where she is able to teach and give performance advice to a group of students that has greatly improved our ability to be able to be on stage. As a guitar player, she has given me pointers that slightly pushes me out of my comfort zone, but as bettered my stage performance.Just as she capable of teaching groups, she is an excellent one-on-one teacher. It is never hard to ask her for extra help or assistance as her genuine love for singing and music is what fuels to want others to have the same love for it as well. She is always encouraging and constantly reminds you of your abilities to make sure you are never feeling discouraged. Having her as a mentor will never fail to improve your skills in music (whether it be singing or performing on stage) and build your confidence."

"Excellent teacher

I took music performance lessons with Cecilia. I am a professional recorder player and in the lessons I learned and discovered many things about how my body works and how this influences my way of playing. It has been wonderful to learn to play connected with my body and tension free! My sound and technique have improved and I can express my musicianship easier.
The lessons with her have been a very enriching experience for me as a musician. I also learned to detect the important issues I need to work in each piece and to find an effective solution. This experience has been wonderful!"
