I am born and have grown up Deaf. I regularly communicate in American Sign Language (ASL).

During my time at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), I weekly met a few students and helped them with their ASL courses. I signed words and sentences to these students when they asked me questions.

After I have graduated from RIT, I have worked at two federal agencies for three years. At one of these federal agencies, I have participated in ASL courses by one-on-one signing words and sentences to tutees and by having these tutees copy these words and sentences in ASL.

I can provide ASL lessons in the alphabet, common signs, visual description, classifiers, sentence structure, facial expression, body language, specialized signs, and ethical or professional relationships with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing people. In addition these le
ssons, I can explain how signs and sentence structure form.

My son, Dade has been taking piano lessons with SooJi for four years now and unfortunately we have to stop as she moved to a new city. She is an absolutely gifted and exceptionally talented pianist and teacher. As a parent, I am engaged in every lesson, observing what my son is learning. Even if when he is tired, not fully prepared, SooJi never stops being kind to him. She always gives helpful tips for effective practice and progress. My son never stops smiling and laughing. Sometimes I join the lesson and also learn stuff and both my and my son just learn tons of new stuff from her lesson. Under SooJi's coaching, my son already finished two solo recitals, 40 minutes each. It is a REAL progress and I was really proud of my son, as he didn't know anything about music before meeting SooJi, and now he is able to play simple songs for people without getting nervous!
I also teach so I know this for sure. Teaching is a natural gift. Someone can be really good at something but might not be good at teaching. SooJi is a total gifted teacher. She knows what to teach, how to teach, what to use, how to deal with students and conflicts, and she is able to solve problems that my son had during practice. Whenever she says something, my son is like " now I got it!" and he is so happy learning from her.
She is an exceptional talent in performing piano as well. I asked her to play in my and my wife's wedding few weeks ago and she played few songs and it was absolutely gorgeous. I am just really sad and disappointed that she is not able to teach him anymore and I can not have fun with them again. But I know she will be literally the best piano teacher ever in whatever years from now. When you see her, you will clearly feel this: she is very professional, yet kind and super funny and silly. She is super talented, yet so humble. She is really good with any kinds of students, she just knows how to treat them differently.
I can see SooJi has a natural gift of teaching, and I do hope she comes back and teach my son again later. Thanks for the four years of teaching SooJi! We love you dear!

She was an outstanding teacher with an exceptional talent in piano performance and teaching. She is very knowledgeable. She stayed focused and she is passionate about the pieces and demonstrated a lot on the pieces. I can also tell she is a very good pianist because she was able to illustrate everything I had to know in such a short amount of time. Another thing I really appreciated was how quickly and fully she was able to communicate with me about the lesson times and any questions I had for playing. I am so thankful for her encouragement, smile, jokes, and all the tips she gave me in the lesson. She is a fantastic teacher for sure, and I definitely recommend her. She surely has a gift of teaching.

Dear SooJi,

You asked for my thoughts on you as a teacher, but I don't think I'll be able to explain those very easily. Your impact on my life is more than I can explain or show. Of all the things I've learned from you, I consider Korean to be of a lesser importance than the life lessons, friendship, and communication skills you've taught me, whether on purpose or not. I'm thankful for everything you've done for me. I'll never forget how understanding and compassionate you are, and I can only hope to grow up and be half the person you are now. In all honesty, you're the best teacher I've ever had, and now I can understand what people mean when they say "This teacher shaped who I am today" and I'll never forget on stop being thankful to them.
Thank you for being you<3 Thank you for being the best Korean/Life teacher <3 Thank you for being the most passionate, true, and honest teacher <3

About Patricia
Background & Experience:
I was born in Taiwan, my first language was Mandarin, then I learned English from my father at age 5. I've spent several years traveling back and forth between countries. I stayed mostly in the U.S. from 5th grade on until graduation, going back every two years to visit my grandmother. After I received my massage therapy certification, I decided to pursue an educational route because I come from a family of teachers. I went back to Taiwan to a boarding school. For class credit, I volunteered to be the English tutor, and to make extra money I tutored my professor who was the head of the technology
department. My most recent hire was translating for a 9 year old boy from China for a family in Chevy Chase.

Individual Lessons:
Each Lesson will be catered to the student. I specialize in simple conversational M
andarin and have the resources in finance, arts, entertainment, science, medicine, and political circles. Specialization in English translating and tutoring from Chinese to English also includes conversational in categories of finance, arts, entertainment, science, medicine, and politics.

Special Needs:
Working with special needs individuals requires patience and understanding of the spectrum of diverse needs. I have been working with IEP's for the last 2.5 years, and have hands on training with my now 5 year old daughter and 3 year old son with speech delay.

I'm an artist, educator, and scholar who uses a methodological, student-centered approach to help you achieve your goals. I teach music lessons and provide reading and writing tutoring to beginning and intermediate students. Here's some more specific info on each one of my services:
___________________________________________________________________________
Music Lessons:
After completing my undergraduate education at Santa Clara University, where I majored in flute and vocal performance, I freelanced as a music professional in the San Francisco Bay Area for three years. I then relocated to the University of Notre Dame, where I received a Master of Sacred Music degree in voice and directed a children's choir in the Notre Dame Children's Choir. I also taught percussion and competed as a marching percussionist for six years, winning the
award of "Best Percussionist" with the Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets and leading my groups to successful competitions during the fall marching season and the winter indoor percussion season. I'm currently a freelancing vocal professional in Baltimore.

If you're looking for voice instruction, flute instruction, or you'd simply like to learn and hone music skills (like sight reading, rhythms, ear-training) from a high-level musician with a broad range of experience, please contact me!
____________________________________________________________________________
Reading and Writing Tutoring:
I have successfully tutored undergraduate and graduate students in reading and writing for over eight years. At Santa Clara University, where I received a B.A. in English, I was vice-president of the English Honor Society and tutored undergraduate students for first-year composition courses. At San Francisco State University I earned my M.A. degree in English Composition, a degree which focuses on the teaching of college-level reading and writing. There I served as a tutor for the English Tutoring Center and the Student Success Program.

If you're a beginning student looking for reading and writing tutoring where I teach you writing skills (like brainstorming, drafting, and editing) or an intermediate student who simply needs an extra pair of eyes to bring your writing to the next level, please contact me!

I look forward to hearing how I can help you reach your goals.

About Isabela
I'm an enthusiastic learner even after 19 years of formal education (two Masters, one Bachelor) earned on two continents continued by US military education in various forms, and formally tested student who needed to document skills that were not formally captured on paper (like the foreign languages I know).

I love interacting with people and pass on my knowledge from five visited continents, instill love for learning and continuous curiosity for any subject out there. Nothing is impossible when you set your mind to it. Failing once doesn't mean that you'll never win (proof in my athletic years and life ever since); determination, hard work, self-motivation and a good supporting system can bring to reality even the most insignificant dreams that we believe may not come true, and especially those in which we passionately trust.

I believ
e in breaking down a goal into objectives, assigning tasks to each one of them, and then sticking to achieve them.

I'm a Certified Instructor with the Department of Homeland Security. My hobbies include practicing foreign languages by speaking them, learning about cultures and slangs, etymology, watching foreign movies, traveling internationally, taking photos, reading (a lot), carefully planning with room for error and impulsive decisions (to take the boredom out of things), meeting with life long friends, drawing, painting, and spending time outdoors for inspiration.

I'm elated at the opportunity of brainstorming with you and giving you tools to be an independent learner.

15 Fun-to-Say Japanese Onomatopoeias (With Audio)
What Are Japanese Onomatopoeias? An onomatopoeia is a word where meaning is derived from a sound, or when a word sounds like how it looks. In English, we have onomatopoeias like "cock-a-doodle-doo" for the sound a rooster makes, or "crunch" for the act of crushing things. Onomatopoeias are quite common in many, if not all languages. We tend to notice them most in comics as sound effects: zippers "zip" and light switches "click." They're fun to say and they certainly aren't hard to learn.
