About Thomas

I have been playing drums for over 47 years. For 16 years I played and performed professionally with my band Black Widow USA. We toured the US several times in support of our two internationally released CDs. For about 30 years of my time behind a drum set I had given drum lessons on and off. But b

This is our first Drum instructor and we are thrilled with Thomas. He is patient, kind, and enthusiastic about teaching. His approach is positive in nature, meeting the student where they are at, takes their interest as the lead, and starts teaching there. My 11 year old son really likes him too! We go to our 4th lesson this afternoon.

These lessons were great. Regarding drums, I was an absolute beginner, and Tommy's lessons turned out to be an excellent jump-start. I used to play keyboards and guitars before, and I enjoy picking up by ear rather than reading notation, so I really liked informal and 'non-notational' way the lessons went. There was no hard notation drill, and yet Tommy had covered most rudiments, basic techniques, and patterns needed to rock in about 10 lessons. I'd recommend this for anyone who doesn't know how to hold sticks but want to get introduced into rock drumming.

As an educator, I strive to provide my students with the tools that they will need to explore the direction that they want to take with their instrument. This can include from enjoying drumming as a hobby, performing in small jazz ensembles, recording electronic and acoustic drums in major recording studios, to performing with a full orchestra! There is literally no limit to what you can do.

My focus is to get hobbyists to enjoy performing drums in the comfort of their own home or with friends, and to have my professionally-minded students go out into the world of performing and recording music. All of these environments are where the ultimate joy of playing an instrument can be expressed.

As a gigging and studio musicians, I understand what it takes to get to the stage or studio, apply oneself in that environment, and come away with a satisfying experience that you can then build upon for the rest of your life.

Jim has been a fantastic teacher to our son. He explains everything patiently and approaches his lessons very systematically. He selects songs that incorporate essential drumming skills (e.g. songs that include doubles, paradiddles, accented notes, etc.). This way, the the student is able to develop an understanding of how theory fits practice.

I took around 15 lessons for bass guitar with James and really enjoyed it. James was able to tailor the experience for what I wanted, which was heavy on music theory, but still made sure we applied the theory to the instrument. I had prior experience with some music theory and playing, but hadn't touched my bass in almost 10 years. James was able to figure out exactly where to pick up, provided great materials, and kept me engaged. James is very knowledgeable, a great player, and a cool cat.

James is a highly qualified instructor and was very thoughtful in answering my questions. I was impressed with the amount of resources he had on hand, such as worksheets, method books, sheet music, etc. I would definitely recommend James for anyone curious about learning music theory and/or the many instruments he plays.

"My son (6) and I have both been taking drum lessons with Bobby for close to two years and it's been an awesome experience. My son, of course, started from scratch, and I had some basic chops before starting, but with seemingly endless patience and dedication, Bobby has gotten both of us to sound great. We quickly progressed from basic 4/4 rhythms into the cooler world of paradiddles and ghost notes, learning techniques like dynamic drumming that go a long way towards making us both sound like legitimate drummers.

Knowing basically nothing about the technical aspects of drumming when we started, we needed Bobby's help to set up our kit. He showed us how to tune our drums, position the toms and ride/crash cymbals, and all around just get the best sound possible out of our basic TAMA drum kit. When Bobby gets grooving on our drum set, it becomes obvious that it’s not the size or cost of the kit that matters.

When we talked about what styles of music we were into and the kind of music we wanted to play, Bobby found perfect selections for us to play along to and he seems to have the sheet music to every song out there! One time I filmed a street musician drumming the funkiest of beats and after I showed it to Bobby, he broke it down for me so that I could play it too.

Bobby has been the perfect instructor for us and I strongly recommend anyone at any level to become a student of his."

"Excellent quality of instruction!

I'm a 37-year-old drum student and I find this class very well organized. Mike comes to class very well prepared for each lesson and I don't feel that he goes too fast or too slow. The speed of the lesson is just perfect! I like being challenged and he does just that. At our 7th lesson, we started learning a song from my fave band, Guns n' Roses, and we're having so much fun!

I like very much that he has his own lessons printed for me to take home and practice. He is very good at writing down the "homework" for the week, which is pretty much what he feels I should practice on from what we have learned during the lesson. Everything he teaches prepares me for the next lesson.

In addition, one great thing about his studio is that I get to play on actual drums while he sits at another drum set in front of me, and via microphone and headsets, he teaches me the patterns. He is very enthusiastic about each lesson and I go home wanting to go straight to my drums and practice! No matter how tired I may be after a long day of work.

In every single aspect, the quality of instruction is excellent! I'm very glad to have found Mike on TakeLessons.com."

"I was lucky to randomly sign-up for a drum course & meet Alexa!! She's been 1 of two favorite teaches in life & will forever remain a friend. She respects a student's musical interests while teaching from a place of support & serious devotion to her work. She encouraged my learning by letting me freely explore what I was musically curious about and had the depth of expertise to encourage my direction. From first lessons, through suggesting I find a band, attending my live performances, encouraging special summer workshops, and inviting me to her performances, Alexa is devotion supported me through years of maturing into a credible drummer. She's not only a supportive expert in her field, but a guide to what it means to become a drummer from encouraging action/performance as an integral part of learning this instrument. I am off to college in the fall, majoring in music, focused on drums and guitar. Thank you Alexa!!!"

He is so encouraging and is always giving you positive feedback on how your doing and it makes you feel good about yourself and how you play. I am always learning new things about my instrument and how important my roll as a musician is no matter who I am playing with or for. With Jimmy the lessons might be once a week but he is always there no matter what day or time to help you out with any questions you may have. He is the best there is no one else like him!!! Every lesson is fun and I look forward to going every week!!"

"Michael has been teaching drums to my 6-year-old son for the past 5 months. He has been really great to work with. My son loves going to his lessons, where he always has fun. Michael's demeanor is perfect for my son, keeping the lesson light and breezy in tone, but making sure he is always learning proper technique and advancing his skills.

Michael is very flexible, always working with us to adjust the schedule when needed. We rented drums at first (which we were able to do through Michael - I asked, he provided; no pressure sales), but when we were ready to purchase, he helped us find the right set. Michael even helped us get a reduced price through a local music store.

I can't say enough good things about our experience with Michael. The best testimony that I can give is that my son loves to practice his drums every day, without having to be asked!"
