Piano has so many challenges for beginners so I emphasize the basics early. A student wants to be able to continue advancing independently and needs to have a proper foundation of theory in order to do that.
Students may have talents in playing by ear and may have interest in making their own compositions, I am a teacher who will encourage these ambitions. Not forgetting, again, to continue pressing the study of theory.
Knowing how to hone in on a student's learning style has helped me keep individuals moving forward and keep the instruction exciting!
I love music and just want others to get to express themselves and find the joy in it that I do.

About Sharon

Music has been a central pulse to my entire life. I started taking piano lessons at age 5 and picked up the clarinet in elementary school. By the end of middle school I was writing songs on the piano and guitar and trying to get anyone I knew to play in a band with me. In High School I finally did

Hey there – I am so glad that you want to study piano! A little bit about me: I am a graduate of the world-renowned jazz program at the Jacobs School of Music and have been teaching for 8 years. I have experience with many styles and genres and have been fortunate to play with artists from over 20 countries. My work has been featured in NPR’s Jazz Critic’s Poll, Jazziz Magazine, and All About Jazz, and I was recently chosen to be a cultural ambassador for the U.S. State Department’s global music fellowship (OneBeat). A little bit about my piano methods: For beginner piano students, I start with exploring the "anatomy" of the keyboard so we can delve right away into learning simple arrangements of your favorite songs. Pick any song you like, and I'll work with you to learn it by ear! Over time, I will teach you more technical exercises, scales, and ways to start reading music. I can also be an ally for intermediate students who wish to delve into learning harder pieces by ear or by ...

Hannah has a rare ability to combine an incredible warmth with a wealth of exercises for improvement. The exercises were truly specifically directed toward the student. In my son’s case, he said this first lesson was also the first time he felt emotionally connected to the upright bass the same was he has in the past with piano and voice. He’s truly an emotionally connected person when it comes to music, yet he’s also a very quick thinker and Hannah could tell when he was able to hold multiple ideas at once. She also acknowledged his joy when it did come. There was a lot of technical knowledge he needed that were holes in instruction and Hannah sussed them out and somehow knew - even though the lesson was online - she knew his cues where it was time to move on or switch things up, or perhaps to add something. I cannot wait to hear the improved sound coming from my son’s right hand technique, now possessing depth and lovely tone that I knew he had in him, but knew also he needed the right instructor to draw out. We are so grateful Hannah is now in our lives in the role of a teacher and hopefully will become a mentor and another adult to look toward for balancing the discipline and enthusiasm music can bring to human beings.

At first I was skeptical about taking online lessons, but I love taking lessons with Hannah. I'm a classical bassist starting to learn jazz, and Hannah is providing exactly what I was hoping for in starting my jazz career. The first lesson we went over what my goals are, and she is providing me with exactly the tools that I need to progress. Every week she sends me a personalized document of what we went over in lessons, what I should focus on in the coming week, and music resources (exercises, jazz charts, etc) to utilize! She is patient, kind, knowledgeable in both technique and theory, and pushes me every lesson.

Chris was very patient with me. I had special challenges due to be an older student that started later in life. We communicated very well--asking and answering questions. Chris knew how to help me as I am challenged with intonation. He did not let me slide which is an excellent quality in an instructor.

When I had questions or problems that we were not able to figure out between the two of us he went to his instructor to ask. He was not afraid to admit that he didn't know. He respected me as a scientist who had challenging questions.

Overall, I highly recommend Chris as an instructor for viola.

Chris is super knowledgeable, flexible to make lessons work over Skype, and attentive to make sure the lessons are tailored to what I am trying to learn as a growing pianist. I’ve had a great experience, grown a lot, and look forward to more lessons!

"I developed a desire later in life to learn how to play jazz and blues piano. I was very fortunate to start learning from Mike. He started me out with basic blues and over time I progressed into many of the jazz standards. Because he is also an accomplished guitar player, at all his lessons, he would accompany me while I played the new piece of music I was learning. He also does this if you are learning the guitar. This was very helpful in giving me a more complete musical experience, as I also learned to hear and play with other musicians. He is an extremely patient and upbeat instructor, constantly giving me positive reinforcement. I would get a new tune to practice as I became more proficient with the previous one. Each new tune became progressively more challenging. Having taken lessons from Mike for many years, I also witnessed his teaching and developing of younger kids. He really works with them in a positive way giving them as much time as they need to turn the corner on each tune and progress forward. They seem to enjoy it and he has developed some great musicians. As part of his instruction, he gives all his students an opportunity to participate in a Jazz Band he puts together. In this Jazz Band he leads all the players in working together though a jam session. Other players may include guitarists, brass players and keyboardists, young and older. Frankly I am forever grateful to Mike for helping me create the foundation to play jazz and blues piano both alone and with a group of other musicians."

"Steve is a rare find - an accomplished musician, a great teacher, and a genuinely nice guy. My 10 year old and I have been taking lessons with him for the past year, and our progress/improvement has been significant and noticeable. Particularly with my son, Steve is patient, supportive, and very encouraging, and he teaches at just the right level. He always makes sure that we cover music theory along with learning our favorite songs in order to get the most out of our training. My enjoyment of piano has increased significantly since starting lessons with Steve, and each time we leave a lesson he says: "Have fun with it!" I highly recommend Steve as a teacher."

Fun and dedicated to the piano with the enthusiasm anyone would want in a teach. Must be great with children given I am like a first grader when it comes to piano and I feel affirmed and supported."
