I specialize in contemporary music theory and also have an intermediate knowledge of classical theory. Students will learn the basics such as roman numerals for chords, all the way to advanced concepts such as chord scales, modulation and chord substitution. Unless otherwise requested, all lessons will be taught using music notation.

When I contacted the company they were very nice about it but I had to challenge their vetting process of teachers.

I am a composer in addition to a violinist and have written transcriptions for orchestral works and composed pieces for different chamber group types, string and symphonic orchestra, and solo violin and piano. I've also written some electronic music as well. I love composing and I use my theory knowledge often when writing and analyzing music for my violin practice and use theory all the time in my practices. I've started learning music theory and ear training since I was very young, for 10+ years now I've been learning and using it. I try my best to find ways to make the theory fun and connect it to real music you are familiar with to keep it relevant and not simply a pursuit of knowledge. I've helped students who are just starting or who think they have no talent or way of understanding written music to students who are well versed and are looking to hone their skills and knowledge to advance further.

Understanding Music Theory has many benefits. When performing music, understanding the theory behind a piece can help you to effectively improvise, make it easier to memorize and allow you to understand what is happening or about to happen.
It allows you to analyze compositions that you like and understand why they sound so cool. It could be that it is using a tried and true technique that has been around or "breaking the rules." In memorable composition, there is usually a surprise.
My area of specialty is commercial music which incorporates popular music and jazz.
The content of study would depend on what your current level of knowledge and what you want to accomplish.

Throughout my time at Berklee, NEC, and now Juilliard, I have studied with many great teachers and musicians from Wynton Marsalis, Eddie Henderson, Kenny Barron, Tiger Okoshi, John McNeil, and Laurie Frink to Jerry Bergonzi, and Miguel Zenon. The diverse subjects we went over in lessons and classes gives me a unique knowledge of certain styles and musical ideas. I try to be as personal and individual as I can when it comes to teaching students. That was the thing that stood out amongst my favorite teachers.

What Does it Mean to Change a Key? To change a song’s “key” means to shift the whole musical system to a higher or lower position. This process is called “transposition.” Performers often need transpose a song to better fit their voices. That way, a performer with a naturally lower singing voice (like myself) will be able to more comfortably sing a song that was originally written for someone with a naturally higher voice. Or vice versa. For singers, transposition feels fairly …
