Since high school, music theory has always interested me. For my students this means theory will almost always be included in a lesson, not just to know it, but to know why and how it influences the notes we play. Due to my college experience, most of my theory knowledge has a jazz tinge to it, so some terminology might vary between that and classical language. Regardless, if you're looking to learn how to use a Babbitonian Matrix, or where to apply a Hexatonic scale, or even just want to know what notes make up a chord, we can definitely discuss it and have a good time doing it.

About Tommy

My name is Tommy. I've been playing bass and guitar since I was 11 years old. When I was in high school, I won my school's Duke Ellington Jazz Performance Award my junior year. Around this time I began to work at my neighborhood's local lesson shop Let's Play Music! off of W Broad Street in Falls C

I am a current TA for Music Theory and can assist with AP Music Theory homework. I can also design a syllabus with assigned practice and readings. I can teach beginners the basic foundations such as intervals, major/minor keys, and the circle of fifths all the way up to more advanced musicians, who may need to work on principles of post-tonal theory, set theory, and Schenkerian analysis for homework and exams.

"I studied music theory with Adam because I needed extra help for college classes, and he was a huge help! There were so many concepts that I knew a little about, but Adam helped fill in the gaps of knowledge and familiarized me with the concepts so well, that I could teach them myself! He is patient, humorous, and a complete joy to take lessons from."

"Hi Ms Bethany, this is Sheenu(Gia & Dia's mom). I was just confused after the class coz I had signed them both for singing lessons not theory lessons. But as far as I know you gave a great class on the basics of theory, which was wonderful. Thank you so much for your excellent class. Please let me know if I need to do anything more to change it to singing lessons.
Thank you!!

Kind regards,
Sheenu."

"AMAZING!

I met Dave in my music theory class at Ex'pression college. He's the reason why I'm making music today. I went from not knowing a thing about music theory or a piano to creating chord progressions, understanding modes, intervals, modal interchange, and how to read sheet music. He's extremely patient, professional, and easy to get along with. His passion for music and teaching is infectious, I highly recommend!!!"

I'm taking music theory and composition lessons from Daniel to supplement what I already know from composing by ear. Why You Should Learn (At Least a Little) Music Theory

One of the most common weaknesses for amateur musicians is a lack of music theory knowledge. Many people assume that learning theory is difficult (it isn’t) that it has no practical purpose (it does), or even that it will actively make them worse at making music (quite the opposite). I’m here to convince you that learning a little about how music works is one of the most important skills you can develop and should absolutely be part of your daily practice routine. Here are five reasons w …

How to Change the Key of a Song With and Without a Computer

What Does it Mean to Change a Key? To change a song’s “key” means to shift the whole musical system to a higher or lower position. This process is called “transposition.” Performers often need transpose a song to better fit their voices. That way, a performer with a naturally lower singing voice (like myself) will be able to more comfortably sing a song that was originally written for someone with a naturally higher voice. Or vice versa.  For singers, transposition feels fairly …

Music Student Face-Off: Memorizers vs. Readers | Which is Better?

As you learn songs and work through your music books, do you memorize the notes? Or do you read along every time you play? In this post, music teacher Vanessa G. discusses the pros and cons to the approaches...   Imagine your teacher gives you a piece of music to study. What's your process? Do you listen to a recording, memorizing the melody and the stylistic aspects before you begin, and then as you play? Or would you sit down and sight read the notes, and perfect it from that star …
