I love teaching! I love connecting with people to find out what inspires them and I feel that I learn as much from my students as I teach them.

I have over 25 years of playing experience in a variety of styles and nearly 20 years of experience teaching the guitar to many hundreds students of all ages and backgrounds. I have taught in many different situations, including through schools, music stores and privately. I am primarily trained as a classical guitarist and I hold a Master of Music Degree in Guitar Performance from The Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University. I have been told by many of my students that I am patient, understanding, very approachable and fun.

Whatever our goals may be in learning to play a musical instrument, the experience and skills we gain in doing so can serve us in every area of our li

Roger was my first guitar teacher, and one of the best teachers that I've had the pleasure to work with. As a professional guitarist, I have had the chance to look back on when I was studying with Roger and compare my opinion now to the opinion I had while I was studying with him. My opinion now is the same as it was back then: Roger is an exceptionally capable and talented educator. He is very easy to work with and is always flexible in each lesson. Flexibility is important; an ideal teacher will have lesson plans with specific skills that he/she feels the student needs to learn, but they will also allow the student's current interests to guide the lessons. Roger was always happy to address any questions or concerns I had, but also made sure to guide my attention to critical skills that helped me grow as a musician. One such skill is proper technique, which is necessary for improving the student's ability to play and for preventing injury. With his background as a classical guitarist, Roger was able to teach me perfect left and right hand technique, which is something I still consider to be one of my strongest assets as a guitarist. His skills and interests extend far beyond classical guitar into genres like rock and jazz. In our lessons we would work on just about anything. We covered topics and styles like Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Wes Montgomery, improvisation, James Taylor's fingerstyle playing, music theory, and sight reading. Overall, I found Roger to be an ideal teacher for students at any skill level, from total beginners to those who are highly experienced.

Roger taught guitar lessons to my son Jeffery for 7 years (starting from age 7). Roger is very competent in teaching all ages and making sure the lessons were age appropriate and interesting.

Jeffery really looked forward to weekly lessons with Roger which were only discontinued because we relocated out of state. Roger was not only a teacher but also a mentor to Jeffery, allowing my son to explore all genres of music and methods.

Roger is classically trained and teaches his students to read music and is knowledgeable and offers up to date music lessons.

My son is now in college and taking a music major. I am truly convincined that Roger's influence and care helped grow Jeffery's natural interest in music. I would highly recommend Roger for music lessons. He is a gifted teacher.

I have been teaching private lessons for close to 10 years and have been an active performer for even longer, playing in all different types of groups, from rock bands and jazz groups to orchestras and brass bands. I studied music at Frostburg State University (Bachelors) and the Peabody Conservatory (Masters). I teach a 45 minute lesson but a 30 or 60 minute class is an option. In my experience, students 5 or 6 years of age, depending on their maturity level, do perform better with a 30 minute lesson. As they progress, they will move to the 45 minute lesson.

Jean is a wonderful teacher. She's dedicated and patient with her students. With a great music background, Jean has given our kids (two of her students) great music & piano techniques/methodology and a way to approach music that is by far superior to that of any of the previous piano teachers. I have studied with Wanchi Huang at James Madison University for six years. At JMU, I earned a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music, both in violin performance. I am currently working on a doctoral degree at Catholic University of America, studying with Jody Gatwood. When I was a student at JMU, I taught several students privately. The students ranged from retirees to JMU faculty and students to adolescents. I am now teaching at Baltimore Talent Education Center, where I teach violin in small groups and individual lessons. The students at BTEC range from pre- kindergarden through high school. I also have festival experience. I have been a student at Brevard Music Center, Heifetz International Music Institute, BayView Music Festival, and I was a Teaching Fellow at Interlochen Arts Camp. Through my experiences both as a student
and as a teacher, I understand that every student is a little bit different. Every student has different strengths and weaknesses. Every student has a different learning style. Every student has a different way of understanding things, a different way of processing information, and a different personality all together. It will be my job as a teacher to get to know each student individually and use my teaching methods to teach the student how to play the violin and help him or her to reach his or her goals.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid-back person. I am easy-going, enthusiastic about violin playing and about teaching and learning music, and I am very patient with my students as well. However, I am also very demanding. I explain and demonstrate objectives in a very precise way, and I demand a lot of detailed work from my students, inside and outside the lesson. I explain specifically what I want the student to do. By the end of every lesson, the student will have specific things to work on for next time. I expect each student to make practicing a habit, and practice regularly what has been discussed in the lesson. I try to make the lessons as pleasant and as laid-back as possible. But I become more firm, serious, and strict when a student either is not making an effort or does not practice enough outside the lesson.
I start students off with the Suzuki method. We work on techniques to hold the violin properly, hold the bow properly, and get a decent sound out of the violin, without too much physical tension. A student begins by learning to play by ear. After he or she is comfortable playing by ear, we associate the notes that the student hears and plays on the violin with written notes on a page.
We also work with the Paul Roland methods so that the student can learn the violin in a basic, rudimentary way. It involves a lot of repetitive patterns, back and forth motions that are slow and round, and avoiding excessive tension. This will give the student the tools that he or she needs to learn how to play the violin in a short period of time.
In three to six months, a student who is a beginner will be able to hold the violin and bow comfortably, create a decent sound on the violin, and play the Twinkle Variations, and maybe a few other songs.
If the student has played violin before, then in three to six months, he or she will have had some rehabilitation to get rid of tension and force, overcome some bad habits he or she may have developed, and review the fundamentals of violin playing. I will improve the student's approach to the violin, and by the end of the three to six months, he or she will have a better idea on how to practice and play the violin.

I will expect the student to have a violin, rosin, and a pencil.

*** Specialties ***
Suzuki Method- a starting point, particularly for kids, but for people of all ages. It is a good way to begin learning the violin by playing by ear, developing a strong, clear tone, and bringing out one's individuality through his/her musical development and his/her ability to be expressive.

In a matter of time, I want the student to get used to reading music, in addition to playing by ear. This can be done through the pieces in the Suzuki method or through other music.

Eventually, I take the student off of the Suzuki method and work with him or her on classical repertoire.

At the conclusion of 5 lessons I learned and grew more than expected from Jonathan. After not having picked up a violin in over 20 years, I am very pleased with his teaching style and attention to proper technique, especially breaking bad playing habits I picked up in adolescence. I will be purchasing more lessons from him soon to continue to grow. I highly recommend him.

Jonathan has been great with attention to teaching proper technique front the beginning before forming bad playing habits. In week 3 I have already felt an extreme difference. The lessons have been very straight foreword and not overwhelming at all. I look forward to learning to play the instrument well with good form.

When our daughter said she wanted to take piano lessons, we checked out several instructors in various teaching settings. We feel very fortunate to have found Justin for our 10yr young daughter's first piano lessons! His approach with her has invited her to want to learn and do well. He selected just the right books for her lessons and is also helping her learn a song she wants to play from one of her favorite bands. This keeps her engaged with other aspects of skill building and music reading! He also wrote out a clear description of what she is to include in home practice sessions. I've been studying music theory for six years, and I've been a music theory tutor for three years. I currently study music theory pedagogy at the Peabody Institute, and I am a graduate assistant for the music theory department.
Music theory is a mathematical approach to music, and can successfully be taught to every type of learner. I have experience teaching student just beginning, studying musical form, counterpoint, atonality, and ear training. Madeline combines her terrific knowledge of singing, anatomy, music theory and songs and shares it in a wonderfully accessible, patient, passionate and age-appropriate way. My daughter has her lesson scheduled for Fridays after her long school week is finally done and no matter how tired and sometimes grumpy she might be as she heads into her lesson, she is always smiling and cheery when she finishes.
