Our son has been taking lessons from Phil for approximately three years (he’s 10 now) and has really enjoyed it. He really admires Phil. He has advanced along in his playing steadily. Phil has been teaching our son how to chart drum parts and also learn songs for band performances with two other boys his age. He’s not only learned drumming methods, but is also learning to listen to what other musicians are doing to serve a role and be part of a team. We highly recommend Phil… he’s a great teacher and great with kids!

I have been bringing my son to Phil for a little over a year now. He is fantastic and has been wonderful to have working with my son. My son was 7 at the time and has since turned 8, he is doing so well that he is ready to play in a kids band. Phil has done a very good job teaching my son the ups and downs of playing music and also has done a very good job of making it fun for him so he hasn't lost interest. I would highly recommend taking lessons from Phil.

Great Teaching

Phil was my teacher starting from 7th grade all the way through high school and I had a blast. He prepared me for playing the full drumset in my school's jazz band. I can proudly say that I became one of the most prepared and technically advanced drummers in my class because of him and still remember most of the techniques I learned 10 years later. He also made drumming engaging and fun and truly helped instill in me a desire to drum the rest of my life, even though its not actually my career.
Additionally, when I got good enough, Phil helped me join a rock band with three student guitarists at the School of Rock, which was fantastic because then I was able to actually apply what I learned and diversify my drumming. Overall, I look back on Phil's teaching as being an incredibly rewarding experience for me and if I had kids who wanted to play drums, I would totally have him teach them. Thanks again Phil.
Andrew L. Maple Valley, WA

About Andrew

I am a flexible, kind teacher who bases lessons on what the student wants to learn. Learning needs to be fun and I do my best to make it that way. I am a recent graduate from Northwest University in Kirkland, Washington. I earned my degree in Contemporary Music Industry and studied music theory, composition, and recording techniques for 4 years while at the school. I have played guitar for over 10 years and have taught guitar for the last 5 years. *** Lesson Details *** I am a pretty laid back person and am negotiable on what curriculum and books to use. A typical lesson for me goes like this: Warm-up song (something they are familiar ...

He adjusted his lessons to the music and techniques I wanted to learn and it was a great overall experience. I'd highly recommend him!

he is the only piano teacher i have had. i was teaching myself piano and was given some lessons as a gift, and i chose him somewhat randomly from the teachers listed on takelessons dot com. i had several lessons from him and he gave me lots of good ideas. i would have continued with him, but for circumstances out of my control. i would recommend him as a teacher. he has lots of experience and can tailor his teaching depending on what you want to do

Rian is patient which is what I needed. He makes you feel comfortable and has a low key way of pointing out areas for improvement without offending.Would recommend him to others who want to play piano, regardless of how old you are.

Will is a highly knowledgeable and relatable instructor

With Will’s patience and easy instruction I am slowly learning the instrument that I love. Will is always prepared for our session with hand outs and a lesson plan. I appreciate that he is willing to take our lesson in a different direction then originally planned depending on my progression. His style is very laid back while still having expectations of your development which is nice because this pushes me to do the work. I highly recommend Will as your instructor.

How Often Should You Tune a Piano?

Just as you go to the doctor for check-ups from time to time, your piano needs maintenance and care throughout its life. You may notice, especially if you have a keen ear or a tendency to sing along with your practice, that your piano drops in pitch, particularly during the summer and winter months. This is because your piano is mostly made of wood, and your wooden soundboard will contract when the weather is drier -- or the heating is on! -- and cause the pitch of the strings to drop.
