Here's how I help teach songwriters:

-Chords/Progressions: I help instrumentalists get out of ruts they're stuck in and find new chord progressions. OR if you're new, I'll show you what's out there. I will also show you commonly used progressions so you know what's used. We will analyze successful songs to see what the writer did and then attempt to emulate those ideas in writing exercises
-Melodies: We'll learn what makes a good melody, and we'll write melodies that are good hooks.
-Lyrics: We'll talk about what makes good lyrics and learn to write good lyrics by modeling lyrics after other songs and writing and rewriting your own lyrics.
-Music Business: If you're interested as well we can learn how the music business works for songwriters.

Jaxon the Guitarist: I am a Doctoral Guitar Major at USC studying classical guitar. I have been playing the guitar for over 20 years and teaching for 15. My main style is classical, and due to the technical training I have had since I was very young, it has been very easy for me to learn and master other styles such as Flamenco, Rock, Jazz, Blues, Pop, Country. I have a passion for performing and have played hundreds of solo and ensemble concerts. As a classical performer I have won prizes in numerous competitions, including the Pacific Guitar Competition, San Francisco Guitar Competition, Sierra Nevada Competition, and the OSAA Oregon State Competition. I have played concerts all over the United States as well as in Spain and Mexico. As a performer of other styles I have played in many orig
inal and cover bands and have won high school and University level battle of the bands competitions. I was a Northwest regional finalist in Guitar Center's "King of the Blues" competition as well. I recently won a Fulbright Scholarship to study Spanish and Flamenco Guitar in Seville, Spain for 2015 and 16.

Jaxon the Teacher: I really love spreading the knowledge I've learned over the years about the guitar, bass guitar, songwriting, music theory, and everything music related to my students. I find a huge sense of fulfillment in seeing my students understand and enjoy learning and making beautiful music. I have a high level of knowledge and skills that I am very willing to use to teach students from the most beginner to the most advanced. Former students of mine have achieved lofty goals ranging from making it into a music program at the college level to winning their school's talent show to being accepted into their school's jazz band.

Kevin T. is a music professor at MUM, Vice president of the San Diego Songwriters guild, and CEO of Songwriting Planet. My background includes ten years of classical voice training with Maestro Julio Berrocal, as well as vocal training through the Feldenkrais approach with Marcy Lindhiemer. Voice
I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the student's individual process of learning. My singing lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal technique exercises come next. When the student is fully warmed up, we will begin to work on songs. It is important that students be a part of the process of picking material since the more personally they respond to the material the more apt they are to become engaged in their lessons. After three to six months beginning students will have gained an understanding of the fundamentals of breathing, relaxation, and basic performance skills. With more advanced students the focus will be on range extension and the on-going development of vocal style through song interpretation and performance related exercises.
Acting
As an acting teacher and coach, I tailor my classes to the needs of each student. I utilize improvisatory and sensory techniques to help unleash spontaneity. I also encourage the students to use their personal experiences as a way to access a full range of emotions. I enjoy working with the student on script analysis, so as to discover the underlying motivations of the character the student is working on.
Creative and Lyric Writing
I use prompts as a way to get the student writing. Often, I will ask the student to write for stretches of time without editing themselves. It is important to unleash imagination before beginning the process of editing. Many times it is the unexpected that is the most compelling.

I have been teaching this subject for over 16 years. There is no specific curriculum as each student will come to lessons with their own unique skills, needs, and goals. Lessons are tailored to those specifics. It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons. Many young composers have great ideas but can only hear them in their heads or play them on an instrument. Lessons will allow you to obtain the skills to write them down with greater speed, accuracy, and clarity. More advance students will also include exploring a wider range of harmonic languages, advanced notation, instrumentation, orchestration, and aural skills. Students should come to the first lesson with examples of their work, either notated or recorded in a digital format. They should be prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study. Lessons are a minimum of 60 minutes once per week.

About Troy
Composer Troy W. graduated from the New England Conservatory, earning his Bachelors, Masters (cum laude) and Graduate Diploma while studying with mentor Malcolm Peyton. After spending a year studying with Lukas Foss in Boston, Mr. W. moved to Houston in 2001 where he continued graduate studies at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music.

During his time as a teacher with the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, Troy taught classes in music fundamentals and music theory for pre-college students. He has also served on the faculty of the Summer Institute for Piano teaching courses in Form & Analysis for pre-college students.

Troy also has maintained a private studio, tutoring and teaching private lessons in composition, ear training, voice, piano, literature, and history for over ten
years. Students who have studied with him come from a wide range of backgrounds with different goals. Those who have continued with musical studies in college have consistently placed out of at least the first two semesters of music theory and achieved advanced placement in their chosen fields of study. Those who chose a different path continue to benefit from the education and training they received from taking music lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
There is no "standard formula" to lessons. Each student has their own unique background, needs, and goals. Lessons tend to be somewhat casual but are structured in such a way as to meet the unique requirements of the student.

To accomplish your goals, there are a few requirements and basic expectations that the student and parent must meet.
The first is practice. Students are expected to practice daily for at least the length of their lesson time. This, above all else, is essential to progress. It is also expected that a parent will attend lessons for students who are too young to drive themselves here. It's important for a parent to guide the student's practice time (particularly for younger students) to ensure that the most is gained from it. This is why I ask that a parent observe lessons.
Each student or parent should bring to each lesson a notebook, pencils (with erasers). The notebook will be used to record notes about each lesson, homework, practice advice, etc. Pencils (not pens...nobody's perfect!) are used by composers to record their creations and performers to mark their music. Both of these essential practices are subject to changing thought and must be open to change. So no ink, please!

Performers: It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons and will be a large focus for all non-readers. Lessons are not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Concerning repertoire, it will be selected based on the student's learning needs but also with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.
Note: Voice students must be at least 16 years of age.

Composers: Just as with performers, it is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons. Many young composers have great ideas but can only hear them in their heads or play them on an instrument. Lessons will allow you to obtain the skills to write them down with greater speed, accuracy, and clarity. More advance students will also include exploring a wider range of harmonic languages, advanced notation, instrumentation, orchestration, and aural skills. Students should come to the first lesson with examples of their work, either written, notated, or recorded in a digital format. IMPORTANT NOTES:
• To reschedule a lesson, more than one day notice is required.

• Make up lessons must be scheduled before the next regular lesson.

• A make up lesson cannot be scheduled in place of a regular lesson.

• If, for any reason, two 30-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 30-minute lessons, not one 60 minute lesson which is a different rate.

• If, for any reason, two 45-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 45-minute lessons, not one 90 minute lesson which is a different rate.

About Ryan
Ryan is a musician from Jefferson Park who plays a plethora of different instruments. He specializes in guitar, banjo, mandolin and ukulele, but also dabbles in accordion, piano, drums, harmonica and several others. Learning to play instruments is one of the true pleasures in his life and he hopes he can make it one of yours, too.

As a teacher Ryan's goals are fairly simple. First and foremost he wants to make his lessons comfortable, interesting and fun. A close second is to build a strong foundation on the basics, so as we learn more advanced techniques we have a solid base of technique to build upon. And third, an understanding of the theory and history behind the music is a great way to engage in the music beyond just the rote learning of technique.

After a brief foray in physics, Ryan settle into a degree in music at the Univer
sity of Illinois, specializing in Ethnomusicology (the study of music of different cultures). This education gave him a strong background in music theory and history in the Western tradition, but also opened him up to a vast experience of a diverse cross section of music from around the world. His insatiable love for learning new instruments started here, where he studied music from West Africa to Bali.

Currently Ryan is a co-lead singer, songwriter and stringed instrument player for the local band Distant Brothers, a folk rock band based out of Chicago. They play venues throughout the Midwest, with some of the notable venues being House of Blues, Metro and Cubby Bear in Chicago. Another highlight of his time with the band has been a collaboration with Oistrakh Symphony Orchestra, where he not only was able to play in collaboration with the orchestra, but joined in the arranging and conceptualization of some of the pieces played.

Vic is a great teacher....doesn't hold back! You'll know how the lessons are going. Vic actually taught me basic banjo technique as well and I played drums in a band he mentored for a few years. It turned out to be a terrific experience and he taught me an awful lot about dynamics on drums in spite of that NOT being his instrument. He's a great teacher! And ARTIST. If you have the chance to take lessons from Vic, do it!!

Writing songs is the essence of modern-day music. So, as a singer myself, I learn every facet for creating songs. I joined a music magnet school to learn music theory/technology, Jazz studies, Piano and Symphonic Band which has helped me significantly. I then started to learn the art of music production/recording and now run my own studio where I normally have sessions of artists coming in to finish projects or just vibe out. I also have a certificate from Berklee College of Music for a Songwriting Course. I write songs of all genres including Pop, Hip-Hop, R&B, Soul, Rock, Blues, Jazz, Alternative, you name it. I just like to have fun and as an artist who is working on an EP right now, i would love to teach the skill of Songwriting which can be very fun to anyone who has curiosity in that art.

I am more than happy to help a student on their journey towards authentic self-expression! Sessions are tailored to the student's individual goals and may include instrument instruction if needed (Guitar, Bass, Ukulele, Accordion and/or Voice).

About Brittany
My name is Britt. I am a singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and visual artist. I love music with all my heart, and I want you to love it too! I have been playing and writing for seventeen years and have lots of experience performing solo and with bands as a singer, guitarist and writer. I want my students to have fun with music, express themselves, pursue their individual goals and become competent musicians.

I have completed extensive coursework in music theory, history and performance and also have a dual bachelor's degree in studio art and cultural anthropology. I am a life long learner, currently studying guitar theory and guitarmaking. I sing in a women's a cappella quartet. In my own music making, I do not shy away from melting expressive platforms together.
