I am a Japanese teacher specializing in teaching intermediate and advanced levels. Although all levels are welcome, usually my students are highly motivated college students or adults who wish to study or work in Japan. Typically students are already able to read and write hiragana and katakana before taking my lessons. I look forward to working with you!

[Academic Japanese, Business Japanese, Conversational Japanese, Japanese Writing, JLPT preparation]

About Erika
Minasan konnichiwa! My name is Erika. I was born and grew up in Saitama Pref., Japan. For those of you who don’t know where it is, Saitama is Tokyo’s neighbor to the north. The movie “Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro)” directed by Hayao Miyazaki is actually based on hills in my hometown!

I moved to San Diego, CA in 2013 after I received my first MA in Literature. I went to San Diego State University and earned my second MA in Applied Linguistics in 2015. I also earned Advanced Certificate in TESL/TEFL from SDSU, which helped me reassess my perspectives on teaching and learning. I have been teaching Japanese both in Japan and the US for almost 10 years, and have teaching experience at San Diego State University, Grossmont College, and University of California San Diego Extension besides private lessons as well as business/medical tr
anslating. I always enjoy teaching and love helping my students learn new culture!

***Lesson Details***

All levels are welcome, though many of my students are intermediate-advanced levels and usually students are already able to read and write hiragana and katakana before they start taking lessons. I assess your proficiency level based on my experience as a teacher and a linguist. According to your learning goals, I tailor a teaching plan so it meets your needs and objectives of studying Japanese. What would you like to learn, the language itself or the culture as well? Here are the main lessons I offer to students:

- Conversational Japanese (business, academic)
- Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) preparation
- Writing support (business, academic, or personal)

Conversational Japanese lessons are aimed at improving your listening and speaking skills while working on increasing your vocabulary. We also review grammar points if necessary. This will help you pick up cultural and social cues in everyday conversation. The JLPT preparation and writing support courses are mainly for advanced students, who wish to achieve higher goals. The test is taken not only by students who want to study in Japan but also by people who want to measure their progress in Japanese. It’s very useful for you to set a learning goal, so you have direction in your studies, motivation to continue, and measurable results that you can check to review your progress.

For all lessons, I choose teaching materials that students would be interested such as Japanese News websites or short videos depending on their learning goals. If you've been working on and are going to learn with me regularly using the book you have and if I don't have it, textbook fee will be charged.

***PLEASE READ!!***
- 48 hours notice for cancellations and reschedule.
- If you would like to have a lesson outside of the listed hours, please let me know. I will try to accommodate your schedule.
- If you would like to use a textbook that I don't have, additional fee will be charged.

I grew up speaking both Japanese and English at home and understand the difficulty of trying to juggle both languages! Whether you want to learn a new language, or simply want to brush up on your Japanese skills, I am always happy to be of help! Lessons will include reading, writing, listening, and speaking (both formal and colloquial styles). I typically use the Genki and Tobira books and also like to introduce students to classic and modern Japanese literature as a way to enhance the students’ cultural knowledge. I welcome beginning and intermediate Japanese students!

About Mona
I'm an active flutist and Japanese enthusiast living in Boston! I recently graduated from the University of Washington with a flute performance degree and Japanese minor and am now pursuing graduate studies at the New England Conservatory. I believe that learning music should be fun and inspiring, but that 95% of artistry is simply hard work! I, therefore, create a positive and encouraging environment for all of my students, while still setting challenging goals. Additionally, I tailor my teaching to fit each student’s needs so that learning potential can be maximized. Stylistic choices in musical expression/phrasing are encouraged through the incorporation of music theory, music history, and ear training skills into lessons. I also believe that body awareness is important, and will include stretches and practice methods into each lesson,
so students can practice efficiently and prevent injuries!

I grew up speaking both Japanese and English and welcome beginning Japanese students!

I am a native Japanese speaker with a Japanese teaching credential. All ages and levels are welcomed! Lessons are customized and catered to the needs/goals of each student. I am also qualified to tutor graduate students (Master’s and PhD) doing their thesis.
I believe when we learn other languages, it is important to learn their culture, history, etc. for better understanding. I’ve learned Japanese drums, how to wear Kimono, Tea and flower ceremonies so that we can explore Japanese culture more than just learning the language!

Bio:
I have been in love with language my whole life. This led to learning and studying English for the past 30 years. In learning English I rediscovered my love of Japanese language as well. I would like to share my enthusiasm for Japanese language with you.

I grew up in a family in which everyone was a t
eacher including my grandmothers, grandfather, aunts, uncle, and my parents. My family inspired me to become an educator as well where I would have the chance to make a difference in students' educational, social, and emotional well-being. I earned my teaching credential from Kochi Women's University in Japan and a Master's in Intercultural communication from Kobe University, Japan.

During graduate school days, I worked as a tutor for international Master's and PhD students to assist them on their theses in Japanese. After I moved to Los Angeles, I started my career in the corporate world, and have worked in the US, Canada and Japan for last 15 years. In Canada, I taught Classic Japanese and Chinese Poetry at Toronto Japanese School as a high school teacher.

About Naoko
Hello! My name is Naoko, a native Japanese.
I moved to New York state in 2010 and have been teaching Japanese as a private tutor.
I really enjoy my work and the interaction with people from all over the world.
Japan has so many interesting little cultural quirks that foreign visitors tend to bombard their hosts with questions, like 'Why do you have to take your slippers off before entering a tatami room?' ' Why can't the Japanese say 'no' directly?' 'Why do people fill glass each other?'
The reason I became a Japanese teacher is to answer the all 'why' questions, to teach correct Japanese language and to spread real Japanese culture.
I am a friendly and enthusiastic teacher (a bit strict for correction though ) and teach local students everyday.
There are some Japanese children who try to catch up with Japanese school curriculum,
there are some college students taking Japanese class at school, and there are business person who work with Japanese.
Now I am studying for the license of Japanese Traditional Culture and a Leader to acquire the qualification.
I make lesson plans for each student according to their needs, such as business conversation, practice for job interview, travel preparation, Keigo, JLPT exercise and intensive Japanese etc.
My lesson is full of originality according to your needs.
If you
・Need help with assignments or making resume or job interview
・Are having trouble with grammar or unknown idiomatic expression
・Have unknown Japanese expressions and proverbs
・Would like help improving your pronunciation
・Want to practice speaking Japanese fluently
・Want me to correct your Japanese strictly

Naoko-san has been a great teacher. In my experience, she is very devoted to helping her students. She is very helpful with answering questions about Japanese language and culture. She covers grammar, penmanship, pronunciation, conversation, culture, and more and truly seems to enjoy teaching. She is always happy to help me with anything I need instruction with regarding Japanese. Her lessons do a good job of introducing grammar and vocabulary, and she is very patient and helpful when her students have trouble with pronunciation or grammar.
