I love sharing my passion for music through teaching. To me, music should be a conduit of self-expression—it is not merely something we do, but rather who we are. While there are many great players who have perfected the technical elements of their craft, it is the greatest musicians who find a way to speak through their art. I strongly believe that we all have the potential to speak through our music, and that the right teacher can inspire that in a student. I hope I can be that teacher for you.

I work with students on both the craft and creative side of music in an enthusiastic and nurturing environment. This approach is aimed at awakening a student's drive to explore their own musical path both inside and outside the lesson. Within a lesson, we will work on (1) instrumental technique and basic music theory, very important aspects to us as players, and (2) improvisation/composition and having creative musical discussions, which are invaluable to us as creatives. From my experience,

My daughter has expressed a love for music and singing from a very early age. As a parent, I thought she had a beautiful voice and that was confirmed by a good friend of mine who recommended me to Steven. I started Olivia with Steven when she was 9 years old. Through his instruction and guidance her voice has grown tremendously. She was awarded a major role as a 5th grader in her school play and then went on to be the lead as a 6th and 7th grader. She was the youngest student in the history of the school to earn a lead role.

Olivia also auditioned for the Paper Mill Playhouse Summer Conservatory and was accepted for their August Intensive program. I have no doubt that it was Steven's teaching that helped her with her audition that gained her acceptance.

Olivia is now 12 and as a young person, needs to learn how to interpret a song so that she can perform it well. Steven takes the time to teach the MEANING of the words and explains the story that is trying to be told. This was very important for Olivia to learn.

I highly recommend working with Steven. He is a fabulous teacher with a lot of knowledge and insight.

I am adept as a composer in both the notated world (written sheet music) and the recorded world (digital audio workstations). I recently received a Master's Degree in Music Composition from Wayne State University. I have composed nearly every kind of music under the sun: wind ensembles, string duos, live improvised film scores, experimental nature recordings, theatrical productions, J Dilla hip-hop beats, etc. Our lessons will be centered around your music (notated or recorded) and how we can take it to the next level using music theory and insight from listening to other composers.

About Andy

My name is Andy and I am a musician, educator, and composer in the metro-Detroit area. After picking up the trumpet 20 years ago in 5th grade band class, I became enthralled with the way music spurs our sense of community and creativity. I have taught as a Michigan public school music teacher for

"Victoria has an awesome sense of connecting the body and the voice. She’s affable, hard-working, and cares about her students. Victoria’s experience teaching children translated beautifully into adult vocal classes: all of the information was accessible and presented to us in a fun way. One on one, Victoria is both personal and professional. I’ve been taking voice for about 10 years and still managed to feel like I was learning the entire class."

"Great arrangement for us

I had been looking for a new piano teacher for my son, even though he was less enthusiastic about starting up lessons again. After his first lesson with Mary, he was looking forward to playing more. She's taking him back to the basics in a totally different teaching philosophy that he's really responding to. She works in music theory and because he's strong in math, he's responding better than with teachers in the past. He enjoys playing now and it shows when I hear him practice. We love this arrangement and I look forward to his progress with Mary."

"Initially my son was reluctant to take lessons. He would conveniently forget the time and day of his lesson. But after three lessons the conversation changed, he reminded me of the time and day. Over the last four lessons Richard and my son have recorded a song. I recommend Richard to any Parent with children that are interested in music as the subject matter. He is accomplished, gracious, demanding but patient."
