I started studying classical piano at the age of 6 and continued through high school before going on to study with Robert Shannon at Oberlin Conservatory, where I majored in music history and theory (as well as English and creative writing - I've always had a lot of interests!). I also sang in choirs from a early age, including my high school's Madrigal Singers, the MMEA Northeast District Chorus, and the Oberlin College Choir, a select group which performs regularly with the Cleveland Orchestra. After graduation, I tried out a variety of musical activities, including singing with a semi-professional a Capella group, None of the Above, and appearing in local community theatre productions. But I finally realized that I'm most comfortable behind a piano, whether playing and conducting for musical theatre, coaching singers, writing music for
youth productions, or teaching the next generation of music lovers how to navigate the keys. And while I perform mostly Broadway-style music now, my classical training continues to serve me well; using good technique not only allows me to play more accurately and expressively, it also protects me from injuries that might otherwise arise from long rehearsals and a busy performance schedule.

I'm excited about where my musical journey has taken me, and I look forward to helping you start or continue yours.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm serious about making sure my students learn basic skills, like reading notes and rhythms and learning to interpret music artistically, that will serve them not only as developing pianists but in any future musical endeavors. To that end, I choose method books (such as the Faber Piano Adventures series) and supporting materials that build a strong foundation of musical knowledge, and I help each student construct a practice schedule that's appropriate to his or her level.

However, although I do maintain a certain amount of structure, I am very patient and relaxed in my approach to each individual student. I recognize that not everyone learns at the same speed or in the same way, so as long as I can tell you're putting in the effort, I will also try my hardest to find what works for you! And I know it's easiest to stay motivated when working on music you love, so I like to supplement the regular lesson materials with music of the student's choice, whether that means offering a selection of level-appropriate classical pieces, helping locate an arrangement of a favorite song, or coming up with our own arrangement if a good one doesn't already exist. And while my own background is strongest in classical and Broadway styles, I'm happy to have students work on music from any genre. One of the best parts of teaching is when I get to learn something new as well.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Malden studio: Dedicated studio with 88-key weighted keyboard, recording equipment, and large collection of sheet music. Parents can sit in on lessons or wait downstairs. Parking in driveway or on street. We have cats.

Bedford studio: Front room setup for lessons with upright piano and stereo. Laptop available to record lessons. Parents can sit in on lessons. Parking available in driveway and street.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would expect the student to provide a piano or suitable keyboard (88 keys, weighted keys or at least somewhat touch-sensitive, with a clear piano sound). For vocal students, it would be helpful for them to have a separate music stand as well.

*** Specialties ***
In terms of vocal music, I am definitely most comfortable with Broadway-style repertoire, but I have experience with some of the classical repertoire as well. As a pianist I have a solid classical background but am also very familiar with Broadway playing styles; I think I've done a little of everything at this point, so I could adapt to any interests my students might have. I am trained in the Taubman piano technique, which focuses on healthy, effective motions, so I try to incorporate some elements of that in my teaching, to the extent
that I think a particular student will benefit from it.

As for methods: for beginning and intermediate piano students I tend to use the Faber Piano Adventures series, supplemented by additional exercise books (Dozen a Day, for example), simple classical pieces (Bastien publishes a book that I like), or other materials depending on the student's interest and level of achievement (pop, Broadway, etc.). For advanced students I would use different exercise books (Hanon, Czerny, etc.) and focus more on repertoire than method, continuing to teach theory and technique as it comes up.

For vocal students I have mostly stuck to whatever materials/repertoire the student was most interested in, plus vocal exercises to support any problems or challenges they might be working on (e.g., range, vowel formation, learning a healthy mix/belt technique).

I am a "mature" student with no experience playing an instrument or learning music. I really enjoy taking lessons with Bethany-- she's calm and patient, and just as skilled a teacher of someone my age as she appears to be with younger students.

Bethany is a wonderful piano teacher! My 12-year-old son has been taking lessons with her for about 3 months now. This is his first time taking music lessons and he absolutely loves it! Bethany is patient and kind and works at his level, while challenging him every week. He feels accomplished and is really having fun. He looks forward to his lessons every week!

At Drake, I received a musical scholarship covering 80% of my tuition costs.
I was also honored to sit as Principal Flute in both the Drake Symphony Orchestra and the Drake Wind Symphony, the top performing groups at the University.

I am one of those individuals for whom teaching is just something that I have to do. I started giving music lessons sometime in the 80's and have loved working with all levels of skill and experience. My students say that I am patient, adaptive and encouraging, committed to making music fun.

I have a Masters of Music from New England Conservatory in Jazz Piano and am comfortable and fluent in a number of musical styles, including pop, rock, gospel, traditional hymnody, jazz, and R&B. Although I love and study classical music, it is not something I teach at this point.

In addition to private lessons and performing, I do music transcription, workshops, and all forms of vocal and instrumental arranging. Bil Mooney-McCoy is a life-long Boston resident who has been playing music all his life. Having served as a church musician for more
than 30 years, I am currently the Director of Worship for the chapel at Gordon College, a small Christian school north of Boston. I'm often involved in city-wide music events in Boston’s faith-based community and in demand as a featured musician for church services, parties, concerts and other events.

My priority as a teacher is to make the learning process fun, life-giving, and productive. I teach with patience and humor, at a challenging but not frustrating pace.

There are at least two ways that might set me apart from other teachers.

Firstly, I have honed and developed "people skills". I am an ordained minister and have held positions where I was formally and informally in a mentoring/pastoring role. I bring that sensitivity to my music lessons, understanding that personal and emotional issues can be triggered by the engagement with the music and skills being worked on.

Secondly, I've had a remarkable broad base of experience. My coursework has exposed me to a wide breadth of ideas and tools; my work life has been long and varied; I have had extensive experience in many different cultural contexts, both musically and otherwise; and I work well with many age groups and skill levels.

Regarding my teaching approach:
For beginners, I have a fairly consistent set of topics and skill sets to cover. Generally, in a few months, piano students (particularly those in middle school through adulthood) should know how to play major, minor and seventh chords, how to read simple chord charts and some very basic accompanying skills. Guitar students should know a dozen open chords and have been introduced to barre chords, and to have learned several styles of finger picking as well as strumming. Bass students should know how to find notes on the board and will have begun to learn how to fill out a song with an expressive but non-obtrusive bass line.

For intermediate students, the pace, direction and focus on lessons depends upon the goals and passions of the student along with the amount of time he or she has to practice. My goals for students at this level and beyond is to learn how to learn. I will use outstanding recorded examples of particular skills or stylistic idioms to help my students understand and master each new concept. I often will check in with my student to make sure that we are on track with what they are hoping for.

For advanced students, we will generally target very specific objectives. I also try to add elements of theory, history, culture, and even life lessons to apply to the topics we address. Because of my background in pastoral ministry, I can serve as a mentor addressing the emotional and relational issues of playing music as well as its technical aspects.

Music Theory often scares beginning guitarists but it really shouldn't. When teaching theory, I always relate it to what the student is working on and make a point to demonstrate how to build upon it in a inspiring way. Words can't express the how everything starts to connect for the student when they learn how to conceptualize what is happening in the the music that moves them. Once these building blocks are learned, the student starts to identify the same exciting aspects in other music regardless of genre. In addition, I always make a point to connect every topic to the students ear so that they know when they hear it. This way, they can improvise, react with other musicians, and compose music effortlessly.

Although I'm not technically a student of Phil's, I learn a lot from him every time I play and teach with him. We perform regularly at Berklee, where I'm a professor, and we give concerts and masterclasses all over the Northeast together (most recent was at Cornell). In addition to being the most talented guitarist and musician I have ever had the opportunity to play with, Phil is an astoundingly good teacher. Born in Minneapolis, MN, Victor Mooney began playing cello at the age of 7. While in Minneapolis he studied with Tom Austin, former member of the Minnesota Opera. Victor completed a Bachelor of Music Performance degree from Iowa State University, where he studied with George Work. Upon graduation he was awarded the Outstanding Senior in Music award, the highest honor the Music Department at Iowa State gives. While in undergrad he also received a scholarship for excellence in performance. In the fall of 2015, Victor pursued a Master's of Music degree in Cello Performance at The Boston Conservatory, where he studied with Andrew Mark. He has participated in master classes with Anthony Ross, Tanya Remenikova, Narek Hakhnazaryan, Hong Wang, Bruce Uchimura, Wes Baldwin, Theodore Buckholz, and Joshua Koestenbaum. From 2013 to 2015 he played regularly with the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra. While at Iowa State University he had the opportunity to sit Principle Cello in both the Iowa State University Symphony Orchestra and the Iowa State University Chamber Orchestra. Along with teaching privately in his Boston Studio, Victor also teaches for the Brookline Adult and Community Education Center. Outside of music, Victor enjoys reading, cooking, watching hockey and soccer, and visiting with family and friends in Minnesota.

As a 40 year old beginner I was a little nervous about the whole online experience as well as starting a new instrument. Victor makes the online teaching experience seamless. Victor is calm, thoughtful and patient. He always finds a way to explain something in a way that relates to me specifically. To do this someone must be able to listen as well as teach. This is quality I have not found in all of my teachers/instructors/coaches throught the years. Victor is also easily the most flexible of any teacher I have had. He always finds a way to accommodate my schedule and works around any issues that arise. I have really enjoyed my learning experience thus far and look forward to each lesson. I would not hesitate to recommend Victor to anyone looking to learn the cello.

I was a pianist and oboist in my early life, and now in my 40s decided that I'd love to learn to play the cello. Victor is a really wonderful teacher. He's very patient, very calm, and very responsive. Whenever I would message him, he'd respond within a few hours, and often he'd respond right away. He was very flexible when schedules changed. Whenever I would run into problems or issues with a new technique, he would find resources, such as videos, to help describe it more fully. I've had many music teachers over the years and Victor is absolutely one of the best.

Excellent teacher! She starts with the basics of how to care for your violin, handling and same day we were playng. Each lesson has a beief review of the last and she provides tools (free apps) to help tune your violin and another for playing/ training.

Matt Stubbs is the most uniquely talented young individual on clarinet, and one of the most creative+technically facilitated improvisors of his generation. He has a deep understanding of the woodwind family as he doubles on all the saxes as well as bass clarinet. He is extremely knowledgeable in woodwind technique, improvisation, composition, and arranging. The dedication he shows towards the craft is impressive in and of itself. Whether you are a beginner, an intermediate, or an advanced student, you will quickly discover that he has more to offer than you could ever imagine. I highly recommend taking his lessons. This is coupled with real world professional experience including his time playing with main stage entertainment, accompanying broadway style singers, and performing nightly solo lounge piano throughout Alaska, Canada, and the Caribbean. His curriculum nurtures the dialectic between love, passion, and excitement being the forefront of musical studies, and a stern understanding of the practical necessities required if a student wishes to take the pursuit to a conservatory and/or professional level. This includes studies in technique relevant to their specific discipline, music theory, ear training, and most importantly listening assignments that broaden the student’s musical palate. All ages and levels welcome.

About Jeff
Boston-based composer and jazz pianist Jeffrey earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he studied with Frank Carlberg, Anthony Coleman, Kati Agocs, Bert van Herck, and John Malia. An experienced and devoted teacher of piano and composition, he has a particular interest in training students in the skills of improvisation, composition, and music theory.

At NEC, Jeff wrote a number of original compositions, all performed by the NEC Jazz Composers’ Workshop Orchestra under Jeff’s direction. After three years at NEC, he took a leave of absence in order to research different tuning systems and gain a better conceptual understanding of harmony. During this time, he worked as a showband pianist with Norwegian Cruise Lines and traveled throughout the East Caribbean, West Caribbean, the Ca
nadian Maritimes, and Alaska, playing jazz sets and accompanying cabaret singers and other guest entertainers on the mainstage. While aboard ship, Jeff devoted his free time to his own musical development and composition, culminating in the work All the Anthills, an etude for solo violin in 5-limit extended just intonation. (This piece was later premiered by violinist Isabella Costanza and was the subject of Jeff’s Capstone project for his Theory Minor at NEC.)

Jeff’s teaching career began coaching musical theater students at the Theater Arts Workshop in his native Westchester County, New York. While still in his early teens, Jeff maintained a busy performing schedule, participating in and having works performed by ensembles such as the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Jazz Big Band and Small Jazz Ensemble and the InterSchool Orchestras of New York Symphony. He was concurrently selected to conduct a six week internship directing the school bands in his own elementary and middle schools. During the summers, he worked as a counselor at summer music festivals such as the New York State Summer Music Festival and French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts. During his time at NEC, Jeff completed another semester-long teaching internship, which included mentoring a college student at Emmanuel College in music reading skills, piano, and music theory. Since his recent graduation from NEC in May 2018, he has kickstarted a private music teaching studio in a pursuit to give back to the musical community from which he has learned so much.
