Students hate writing because they’ve been disenfranchised. They are told to write about things that are of no interest to them. Or they are continually drowned in a flood of suggestions and critique. I helped students who think they hate to write by helping them see that writing is an extension of their interests. I use what a student loves to break through and help them see that writing can be meaningful to them, not just an assignment from the teacher.
I understand that skills taught does not equal skills learned and that every person needs his or her own personalized approach to learning.
