I started studying classical piano at the age of 6 and continued through high school before going on to study with Robert Shannon at Oberlin Conservatory, where I majored in music history and theory (as well as English and creative writing - I've always had a lot of interests!). I also sang in choirs from a early age, including my high school's Madrigal Singers, the MMEA Northeast District Chorus, and the Oberlin College Choir, a select group which performs regularly with the Cleveland Orchestra. After graduation, I tried out a variety of musical activities, including singing with a semi-professional a Capella group, None of the Above, and appearing in local community theatre productions. But I finally realized that I'm most comfortable behind a piano, whether playing and conducting for musical theatre, coaching singers, writing music for
youth productions, or teaching the next generation of music lovers how to navigate the keys. And while I perform mostly Broadway-style music now, my classical training continues to serve me well; using good technique not only allows me to play more accurately and expressively, it also protects me from injuries that might otherwise arise from long rehearsals and a busy performance schedule.

I'm excited about where my musical journey has taken me, and I look forward to helping you start or continue yours.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm serious about making sure my students learn basic skills, like reading notes and rhythms and learning to interpret music artistically, that will serve them not only as developing pianists but in any future musical endeavors. To that end, I choose method books (such as the Faber Piano Adventures series) and supporting materials that build a strong foundation of musical knowledge, and I help each student construct a practice schedule that's appropriate to his or her level.

However, although I do maintain a certain amount of structure, I am very patient and relaxed in my approach to each individual student. I recognize that not everyone learns at the same speed or in the same way, so as long as I can tell you're putting in the effort, I will also try my hardest to find what works for you! And I know it's easiest to stay motivated when working on music you love, so I like to supplement the regular lesson materials with music of the student's choice, whether that means offering a selection of level-appropriate classical pieces, helping locate an arrangement of a favorite song, or coming up with our own arrangement if a good one doesn't already exist. And while my own background is strongest in classical and Broadway styles, I'm happy to have students work on music from any genre. One of the best parts of teaching is when I get to learn something new as well.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Malden studio: Dedicated studio with 88-key weighted keyboard, recording equipment, and large collection of sheet music. Parents can sit in on lessons or wait downstairs. Parking in driveway or on street. We have cats.

Bedford studio: Front room setup for lessons with upright piano and stereo. Laptop available to record lessons. Parents can sit in on lessons. Parking available in driveway and street.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would expect the student to provide a piano or suitable keyboard (88 keys, weighted keys or at least somewhat touch-sensitive, with a clear piano sound). For vocal students, it would be helpful for them to have a separate music stand as well.

*** Specialties ***
In terms of vocal music, I am definitely most comfortable with Broadway-style repertoire, but I have experience with some of the classical repertoire as well. As a pianist I have a solid classical background but am also very familiar with Broadway playing styles; I think I've done a little of everything at this point, so I could adapt to any interests my students might have. I am trained in the Taubman piano technique, which focuses on healthy, effective motions, so I try to incorporate some elements of that in my teaching, to the extent
that I think a particular student will benefit from it.

As for methods: for beginning and intermediate piano students I tend to use the Faber Piano Adventures series, supplemented by additional exercise books (Dozen a Day, for example), simple classical pieces (Bastien publishes a book that I like), or other materials depending on the student's interest and level of achievement (pop, Broadway, etc.). For advanced students I would use different exercise books (Hanon, Czerny, etc.) and focus more on repertoire than method, continuing to teach theory and technique as it comes up.

For vocal students I have mostly stuck to whatever materials/repertoire the student was most interested in, plus vocal exercises to support any problems or challenges they might be working on (e.g., range, vowel formation, learning a healthy mix/belt technique).

About Albino
Albino was born in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, a country in southern Africa known for its rich musical and cultural heritage. Fueled by the resourcefulness and determination that have always characterized Mozambicans, he built his first guitar at 16 from a 5-liter can of oil, scrap wood, and strings made out of electrical cords.

Drawn to the sounds of neighborhood street musicians in Maputo, Albino began to play in a number of local bands. As with his home-made guitar, Albino wanted to combine styles and incorporate diverse elements in his music. For his talents to grow, he knew he needed experience new places, cultures, and sounds.

While studying music education and Performance at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Mozambique, he heard about the Berklee School of Music in Boston, USA, where he could expand his musical horizons
. Soon after, he was one of the first students to receive a full scholarship to Berklee through the African Scholars program. In 2009, he settled in Boston, Massachusetts.

At Berklee, he was exposed to a variety of influences, but wanted to go deeper into the roots of jazz and expand his knowledge of music. He auditioned and was selected to participate in the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, which is directed by Danilo Perez and the residency teachers, including Joe Lovano John Patitucci, and Terri Lyne Carrington. The Institute emphasizes an artist's original vision in jazz, and has helped Albino find his own unique voice in the art form.

Albino still felt the absence of his own Mozambican traditions in his music. With the help of his mentors, Richard Bona and Lionel Loueke, two of the most prominent African musicians in the United States of America today, he began to bridge that gap.

Today, Albino's music succeeds in combining many disparate parts into an organic whole. It incorporates his musical experiences from Mozambique, the U.S., and many other places around the world, combining rhythmic patterns and musical concepts to create a unique Moz-Jazz sound. He will always continue to combine and capture the energies of different musical traditions to create a unified and original musical style.

Albino's original composition “Mozambique Dance” was recorded by Jazz Revelation Records, a student-run record label at the Berklee College of Music, for the 8th annual album released in 2011. He also recorded “Awusiwana,” his own composition, for the Berklee 2012 summer album. His debut album, also called Mozambique Dance, is to be released in Spring 2013.

Albino is an active musician, and has performed in several countries including Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Italy, the U.S., and Mexico. He has also produced and recorded various projects in Mozambique and in the United States. In 2012, he will graduate from Berklee College with a degree in Music Production & Engineering and Performance, and a minor in Acoustics and Electronics.

The lesson will be divided into two sections; warming up and practicing songs. The warm ups will include breathing exercises and various scales and arpeggios. The aim of these exercises is to create a continuity of sound through practicing legato (sustained, connected singing) and portamento (sliding seamlessly between pitches). A focus will also be placed on pitch accuracy and intonation. The songs will serve as an extension of the exercises with an additional focus on diction and rhythm.

I have been teaching since 2013 as a music instructor. Currently I teach at 3 music schools; EKS in Quincy, Bach to Rock in Wellesley, and Piano Playtime in Milton and Arlington. I also currently work as a section leader or ringer for First Parish Church in Lexington. I also frequently perform in private residences with a small chamber group I call "Sole Durato" or setting sun in Italian. We also perform at various retirement homes and music festivals such as Newbury Nights and the Caspian Music Mondays series in Vermont. In the past I have also worked as a pop and jazz singer at various restaurants playing anywhere from 4-6 times per week.

Heather has been fantastic for my 10 yr old! It is clear Heather's knowledge is extensive but she makes the lessons fun and is so engaging with my daughter. My kid doesn't realize how much she is learning and just loves going to her lessons every week! As a bonus, her singing actually improved as well! I was impressed! Heather is superb and all you could hope for in a teacher.

Heather may be the youngest voice coach in Boston at the moment, but her wealth of knowledge in singing technique reaches far beyond her years. I come from family of musicians, and I have started exploring music since the age of 5. In addition to my classical studies in Russia, I won the only full tuition scholarship to study in famous Berklee College of Music in the competition that took place during Berklee Asia Scholarship Tour in 2010.

In Berklee I was deeply influenced and moved by Eastern European and Middle Eastern music, which lead to experimentations in fusing those genres with modal jazz and then later rock.

As an adult student transitioning to a new instrument, I can wholeheartedly endorse Inna as a fantastic teacher. She's patient, calm, knowledgeable and encouraging. Her lessons are fun with useful drills and advice to increase your skill but also spends time each lesson on pieces that are more fun to keep it interesting. My speed, confidence and technique have all noticeably improved in only a short time thanks to her tutelage. I hope to continue improving with her help in the future!

I have engaged with both classical and contemporary repertoire throughout my vocal training. An understanding of how the human voice works, as well as technique are crucial components to any form of singing, whether it is pop, rock, jazz, or classical. The first few lessons will involve developing proper breathing techniques. If you are looking for a teacher with many years of experience on stage in various ways including musical theater, bands and also in the recording studio, you've come to the right place. If you are looking for someone who will not try to change you nor try to force you into singing songs that you do not like or change the love that you have for certain types of music by molding you into someone else, then yes, again, you have come to the right place !
My goal is to take what you have already and to improve upon it by giving you some warm-up techniques and structure so that you can preserve your talent as well as expand upon it. Want to try to sing a little higher? We will work on that. Can't hit those low Adele or Christina Perri notes? We'll tackle those. It is all about breath technique and placi
ng your voice in the right spot and we will warm up so that we can do that and focus a lot on the breath.
Do you find you lose your voice easily? I have many students that have that trouble and many of them are using their voices incorrectly on the soccer field or the softball field because they are encouraged to "be loud". One of my main concerns with my students is preserving their voices, and I focus a lot on getting them to work with me on that. It is important to preserve the voice even out of the lesson, 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. Having lost my voice when I was younger, I learned the hard way about the things we have to do to preserve it. If you are to be a singer, then this is serious and is something I focus on a lot.
Do you want to be part of a team instead of someone demanding things of you? Do you want to sing pop but have come across teachers who will force you to sing opera or classical? That will not be me. I find that whatever is in you guys that is natural is what I need to focus on as the core and I build around it and upon it. That works out so much better and having you guys choose your own songs shows me that you are engaged and interested and excited to have a lesson as opposed to having to drag your feet because you don't like what you're working on. There are songs that just don't work or are not challenging enough, and in that case I will absolutely say that we should move on to another but we do start with what is in your heart and what inspires you.
