Konnichiwa!!!! My name is Mari and I am a native Japanese speaker fluent in both English and Japanese. I grew up in the States but speak Japanese regularly with my parents and Japanese friends.
Are you going to japan and want to learn some key phrases? I can help!
Do you need someone to practice Japanese with? I can help!!
My lessons are in 30 minute increments.
Let’s start learning!!

About Mari
Welcome to my music studio!

This will be a fun, incredible way to start or continue your music instruction. I have been a private violin and piano instructor since 1991. I took a break in 2005 while my kids were little. Now that they have grown up a bit, I am so excited to come back to this!

My teaching methods involve reading notes. I do not teach the Suzuki method. If that is what you are looking for, I can refer you to some wonderful local teachers. I will have 2 recitals a year and some workshops and clinics in between.

Thank you and I am looking forward to taking this musical journey with you!

Recitals and Performances: I will schedule 2 recitals a year and I highly encourage students to attend and participate in both.

Practice: A student's progress is 100% based on the practicing that takes place at home. I recom
mend having a scheduled time everyday that is dedicated to uninterrupted practice time. For 30 minute lessons, I recommend a 30 minute practice.

Books and Materials: On the first day, I will have books that you can buy from me. Please bring books to every lesson.
PIANO STUDENTS: It is crucial that you have a working piano at home. While I understand it's a huge commitment to buy/rent a piano, playing on a keyboard is not the same. The exception is if you have a full size keyboard (88 keys), with touch sensitivity.
VIOLIN/VIOLA STUDENTS: PLEASE consult me before you buy/rent a violin. There are several places that you can buy a violin 'package' for $99. For not much more, you can have a violin that is higher quality and will sound better. Remember, you only sound as good as your instrument! I know several reputable places that rent instruments that are of high quality.

Summer Schedule: I will try and be as accommodating as possible for the summer. If you know already which days you will be gone, let me know and we can work it into the calendar.

My approach to teaching lessons has always been with a gentle, calm demeanor. However, that said, I do want my students to excel and feel challenged. If at any time, you have concerns, please don't hesitate to talk to me about them. I want this to be a fun experience and the only way to ensure that is to make sure that the port of communication is always open. Thank you and let's get started!

I absolutely loved learning from Mari for my piano lessons! As an adult learner, I felt like my brain doesn't work as fast as it used to, so learning a new instrument was difficult, but Mari completely caters each lesson to my learning speed and maximized my abilities. She takes into accounts the areas and types of music I wanted to learn and helped me to achieve being able to play that type of music. I also loved and appreciated that she works around my busy work schedule and accommodating lessons when plans change throughout the week. I would highly recommend Mari as a music teacher to anyone interested in learning a new instrument at all ages!

O genki desu ka?
Hi, I'm Richard, and I can teach you simple Japanese. I graduated from BYU in Japanese and lived as an LDS Missionary in Tokyo for two years in 2003-2005. I love teaching everything that I know in a simple, understandable way. So I can help you learn the basics faster than you would normally. I know what it's like learning in school where you seem to take forever, and don't get very good. I also know what it's like talking to many people in Japan, and learning very quickly, and knowing the difference. I want to help you learn as efficiently and as quickly as possible. I also have a one hour presentation of the basics of Japanese grammar, that basically covers like the first 2 years of college Japanese classes! No joke, it's a powerpoint presentation I've put together that will really give you the "big picture" with the backwards grammar that we try to understand. Ask me any question, and I'll do my best to help you out! Mata ne!

About Richard
My goal is to help students ENJOY the piano by finding ways to make it easier and doable. I have a very useful approach in helping students become self sufficient to sight read very well, to see patterns, understand music theory to either help them play well, or to even create their own music(I compose a lot of great music as well)

I couldn't sight read very well until I was 16, but I had a great sight reading teacher that showed me how to develop it, and now I can say that I'm one of the best sight readers out there that I know. I was a ballet pianist at Brigham Young University for several years where all I did was sightread binders full of ballet/classical music. I play for choirs, church congregations, jazz bands, or musical jam sessions all the time, and I couldn't do that at all if I didn't learn how to sight read well.
I would love to help you learn the piano, and I will do my best to make learning as effective as possible. I especially enjoy teaching those who quit and would like to try again, because I know what that is like.

Concerning my musical background, I've played, arranged, and composed piano for choirs, bands, jazz combos, singers. I've been in bands all my life, and have composed for jazz bands, choirs, and orchestras at BYU and in Eastern Europe. I also play about 10 different instruments. I won two Student Emmys in Hollywood for my compositions to BYU's animations in 2010 & 2014.

I am currently writing music for video games.

I grew up speaking both Japanese and English at home and understand the difficulty of trying to juggle both languages! Whether you want to learn a new language, or simply want to brush up on your Japanese skills, I am always happy to be of help! Lessons will include reading, writing, listening, and speaking (both formal and colloquial styles). I typically use the Genki and Tobira books and also like to introduce students to classic and modern Japanese literature as a way to enhance the students’ cultural knowledge. I welcome beginning and intermediate Japanese students!

About Mona
I'm an active flutist and Japanese enthusiast currently living in Seattle, WA! I hold degrees in Flute Performance from New England Conservatory and the University of Washington, and will continue my studies on Fulbright at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland this fall. I believe that learning music should be fun and inspiring, but that 95% of artistry is simply hard work! I therefore create a positive and encouraging environment for all of my students, while still setting challenging goals. Additionally, I tailor my teaching to fit each student’s needs so that learning potential can be maximized. Stylistic choices in musical expression/phrasing are encouraged through the incorporation of music theory, music history, and ear training skills into lessons. I also believe that body awareness is important, and will include stretches and
practice methods into each lesson, so students can practice efficiently and prevent injuries!

I grew up speaking both Japanese and English and welcome beginning Japanese students! Students and I work out of the Genki I, Genki II, and the Tobira textbooks. Japanese lessons focus on reading, writing, and speaking standard Japanese at the conversational level.

Ever since I discovered Dragon Ball Z on Toonami back in the early 2000's, I have come to develop a love of all things Japan, specifically anime and J-pop. My experience with learning Japanese started back when I started studying at home with my older brother back in 1999 or so, and then started studying Japanese at college, which culminated in the completion of a minor in Japanese as part of my BA. I have also visited Japan one time to visit my older brother who was teaching English over there at the time. I love Dragon Ball (among many, many other anime) and T.M. Revolution.

About Paul
I hail from Walla Walla, Washington, home of the "famous" sweet onions. I can't begin to express how much I love languages!! I have studied 8 so far (Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Italian, Swedish, and Dutch) and I teach 5 (Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and Japanese), and want to keep learning new languages throughout the rest of my life. I love to work with students so that's why I've kept my rates low--to make sure more people can have the opportunity to learn these languages. I have a down-to-earth style and I allow my students to guide their own learning in a student-structured, individualized way. As of June 2019, I have taught multiple students different languages, among whom are three students I have been teaching between 7 and 9 months, who have all improved considerably and continue to progress steadily
. I am positive I can help you come to understand the wonderful world that is language and to learn how amazing it is to be able to say the same thing in so many different ways, and how much better it is to be able to communicate with someone in his/her native language instead of having to resort to English. Let's do this!!

Note: I have not had any connectivity problems for quite a while now so be assured that I can provide quality instruction with no issues.

Today, I have full Japanese fluency, and have worked in both Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture--the deep countryside--and the hectric center of Tokyo. But, like so many of you, I started learning Japanese on my own, with only textbooks and cassette tapes. I am almost fully self-taught, and didn't take my first actual 'Japanese class' until my time at Florida State University. Starting out learning at age six, I understand what works and what doesn't when learning at home. My lessons consist of real-world examples and pop-culture related materials, that won't lose your attention.

I also cultivate lessons depending on what you struggle with. Having trouble with Kanji? I can help untangle all of that confusion. Need grammar help? We'll chat until the grammar just comes naturally. Just let me know your goals, and we'll work together!

About Carley
I'm a Japanese translator and teacher, who has lived everywhere from Tokyo, Japan to Salem, Oregon and everywhere in between. Currently based in Mississippi, I'd love to share the incredible gift of language with those who have a passion for Japan and Japanese culture!

I began learning Japanese at the age of six, when I fell into a world of anime and video games. Largely self-taught, I graduated from Florida State University in 2012 with a B. A. in Japanese Language and Culture, and moved to Japan three months later.

In Japan, I was an educator for a few years in the countryside, before moving to Tokyo to work at a financial company as a translator and editor. In 2015, I passed the JLPT N1, the highest level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, held in only six cities in the US.

I have worked as a translator for seven yea
rs, and In the past, I worked with emmy-award winning director Leo Eaton, as a translator and editor for the PBS documentary 'Sacred Journeys.'

As someone who loves popular culture, and sees anime, manga and video games as excellent outlets to help Japanese stick in the minds of students, my lessons are hand-crafted for every student, and not bland or regurgitated material. Japanese is difficult, but with some confidence and passion, it's a gift that young people can enjoy for a lifetime.

I am happy to teach from my home in Madison, but am also happy to teach at nearby establishments, such as Starbucks or the local library. Please don't hesitate to contact me with questions!

Do you want to understand your favorite anime show, movies or Japanese culture better? Do you want to learn to crack jokes in Japanese and win any crowd over? Would you like to do business in Japan and need someone who can not only teach you the language, but cultural differences and etiquette so you can win over any client?

Japanese and English are polar opposites in many ways.
Sentence structures are upside down. English is written horizontally left to right, but traditional Japanese is written vertically right to left.
Communicating can be difficult when what can be spoken directly in English has to be said in more subtle ways in Japanese, and this miscommunication can cause relationships to break down.

My passion is to help people cross cultural barriers and make new friends.
Learning a new language can build confidence and expand your mind in ways you never thought possible!

One of the signs that you have truly mastered a language is to understand the humor. I can ...

About me.

I was born in Fukuoka, Japan and moved to the US when I was 18.
I studied ESL then got a degree in marketing and worked in Real Estate and Finance for many years.
I learned English from scratch when I moved to California and am now completely fluent in English, so much so that people can’t believe I’m not from here.
My work takes me back and forth between Japan and the US, and I am so grateful to have a deep understanding of both the Japanese and Western way of life and be able to celebrate the two.

Masaki fosters a learning environment where he takes all of the hard work of learning a new language transforms it into fun. He has a bright personality, and the ability to not only translate the language, but the language in the context of the culture. He doesn't just teach you to speak Japanese, but how to be Japanese!

Talking to Masaki you would never know that English was not one of his native languages... I'm still shocked that he didn't begin learning until he was already an adult!

If you are wanting to learn Japanese, or if you are Japanese and you want to become as a native English speaker, you have found your guy!

It's hard to believe Masaki could become so fluent at a second language when he only started learning at the age of 18. It makes him a great teacher for adults because he himself started a second language as an adult.

His teaching style is so fun and so tailored to each student I highly recommend him as a language teacher, both in Japanese and English!
