Hello,
I am Vasiliy M, Boston University School of Music Alumnus (DMA in Composition). We dwell in Boston since Fall 2002; before that time , we lived in New York, where I studied Composition at Mannes College, The New School For Music. I received both BM, and MM degrees from Mannes in 1999, and 2001, respectively. Before an arrival to US, in 1994, I studied Jazz Performance, Electric Bass Major, and Classical Composition, at Moldova State Conservatory, from 1988 to 1993, respectively.
I was raised in the family, where music is an essential part of its daily life; my father, Gr
igoriy, before his retirement, was a military band trombone player, and, quite naturally, I was exposed to music, and encouraged by my parents to learn playing an instrument of my choice, from my early childhood.
My mother, Anisia Kondrat'ievna, possesses both beautiful vocal abilities and perfect pitch , although she has never had a chance to develop her natural gifts any further. But I have heard my mother singing, and these moments remain one of the most touching and impressive musical experiences, that I have ever received, and remember to this very day.
Only after a considerable life experiences, abound of trials and mistakes, at the age of twenty five, I have come to a clear realization, that music remains my greatest passion, and that I would have to become a professional musician. With help and support of friends and colleagues, I have entered Community College in Soroki city, Moldova Republic, where I have studied Choral Conducting for Amateurs. I have graduated from school in May of 1988, having written a few instrumental and vocal compositions of my own, and, quite unexpectedly for myself, was invited, that summer, to visit Moldova State Conservatory, with the prospect of audition for the Composition Major. After the meeting with the Chair of the Department, I was offered an opportunity to be accepted to the Master Degree Program in Composition, provided I will have completed two years of preliminary studies of Music Theory, Music Harmony/Voice Leading, and many other related disciplines.
Why do I bring all of these facts to this Essay? I know for the fact now, that I was not ready for what was awaiting ahead of me, back then. There was no way, that I could cope with the demands of Composition Program curriculum. But I have had love for music, that my parents have implemented in me throughout my childhood; I have had natural abilities, that Heavens supplied me with: and I have had a chance to make my dream a reality, providing I do everything that I will have to, during the following years of struggles and study.
The decision was made, and my studies have begun. I have come through every mistake, defeat, and mind-barriers imaginable, and if it would not be a continuous stream of professional help and support, that I have received from my numerous teachers, mentors, and professors, along the years of study, my goals could never be attained to any modest, but real degree.
Whenever I have a chance to teach, tutor, or assist other musicians with their study, my past experience always reminds me, that any person may experience some difficulties of various nature with the learning material, from time to time, and that those difficulties should be addressed by student's teacher with the highly individual approach, however time-and effort-consuming it may be. Patience and respect, in regard to the students, have become as important aspects of teaching to me, as those of discipline and professionalism.
My studies have come to an end; I see now, that the world of music is an endless entity, for it has no boundaries, and we all have to maintain our further progress, in order to move to our chosen destinations, and to help others with their own advancements.

I would be more than willing to assist my prospective students with their various musical endeavors, and people's willingness to either play music instruments,take voice lessons, or to study Music Theory/ Musicianship disciplines will serve us as a starting point for our work. Through the diligent preliminary talk we will discuss various aspects of interest that my students have developed in relation to music, so we could plan and design our future lessons according to an initial discussion. My job and responsibility will be to make an intelligent assessment of my students' natural abilities for the given subject of study, to create vigorous learning atmosphere during our meetings, and to give my students professional instructions to the best of my humble abilities, for the benefits of their musical , aesthetic, and personal development. I will encourage my students to learn as much as they can, at the given moment, but I will not ever attempt to exceed people's natural capabilities. Participation in Music with love and fun should be as rewarding and valuable to the music amateur, as professional performing career ( with its highly demanding standards) stands for classically trained musicians. During our study sessions, we will work upon the goals and tasks that we have discussed at the beginning of our meetings. My ultimate goal as a teacher was and will always be to help my students discover and bring forward their best creative potentials through the intensive musical studies and practice, and, at the same time, to favor heir initial interest's transformation into a deep, serious passion.

I have taught voice on faculty at Camp Encore/Coda, music composition with Classroom Cantatas, and private voice lessons out of my home studio, currently in Somerville. I've also taught for 2 after school programs and 3 summer camps. I've studied piano, both classical and jazz, for a total of 15 years. I have studied a variety of musical topics at college, from theory and composition to singing and conducting, to music technology, recording and engineering. I can reliably reach students 5 miles away, traveling by bike or public transit depending on the student's location.

I prefer students to have a piano or keyboard, though we can work without one if necessary. My keyboard is too bulky to be carried around for each lesson. If a keyboard is not available, we can work without one, and I will bring a tuning fork for starting pitches.

I sing in a variety of styles, including classical, broadway, and jazz, both sacred and secular, from around the world. I have extensive knowledge of music theory, and 15 years experience as a pianist. Although I do not currently teach piano, my ability to accompany vocalists during lessons is very helpful for students.

About Albino
Albino was born in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, a country in southern Africa known for its rich musical and cultural heritage. Fueled by the resourcefulness and determination that have always characterized Mozambicans, he built his first guitar at 16 from a 5-liter can of oil, scrap wood, and strings made out of electrical cords.

Drawn to the sounds of neighborhood street musicians in Maputo, Albino began to play in a number of local bands. As with his home-made guitar, Albino wanted to combine styles and incorporate diverse elements in his music. For his talents to grow, he knew he n
eeded experience new places, cultures, and sounds.

While studying music education and Performance at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Mozambique, he heard about the Berklee School of Music in Boston, USA, where he could expand his musical horizons. Soon after, he was one of the first students to receive a full scholarship to Berklee through the African Scholars program. In 2009, he settled in Boston, Massachusetts.

At Berklee, he was exposed to a variety of influences, but wanted to go deeper into the roots of jazz and expand his knowledge of music. He auditioned and was selected to participate in the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, which is directed by Danilo Perez and the residency teachers, including Joe Lovano John Patitucci, and Terri Lyne Carrington. The Institute emphasizes an artist's original vision in jazz, and has helped Albino find his own unique voice in the art form.

Albino still felt the absence of his own Mozambican traditions in his music. With the help of his mentors, Richard Bona and Lionel Loueke, two of the most prominent African musicians in the United States of America today, he began to bridge that gap.

Today, Albino's music succeeds in combining many disparate parts into an organic whole. It incorporates his musical experiences from Mozambique, the U.S., and many other places around the world, combining rhythmic patterns and musical concepts to create a unique Moz-Jazz sound. He will always continue to combine and capture the energies of different musical traditions to create a unified and original musical style.

Albino's original composition “Mozambique Dance” was recorded by Jazz Revelation Records, a student-run record label at the Berklee College of Music, for the 8th annual album released in 2011. He also recorded “Awusiwana,” his own composition, for the Berklee 2012 summer album. His debut album, also called Mozambique Dance, is to be released in Spring 2013.

Albino is an active musician, and has performed in several countries including Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Italy, the U.S., and Mexico. He has also produced and recorded various projects in Mozambique and in the United States. In 2012, he will graduate from Berklee College with a degree in Music Production & Engineering and Performance, and a minor in Acoustics and Electronics.

Dear Prospective "Upright Bass" Students,

Thank you for taking the opportunity to visit my TakeLessons profile and for wanting to either start upright bass for the first time or continue upright bass lessons, perhaps with a new instructor. For starters, I am a freelance upright bassist in Greater Boston and I perform for many ensembles throughout the area - I have been called to play for the North Shore Philharmonic, and I have performed in several musical theatre pit orchestras in the area, performing for shows such as "Into the Woods" or "South Pacific". Before I moved to Boston, I live
d in Connecticut and performed with the Waterbury Symphony, the New Britain Symphony, and the Wallingford Symphony Orchestra.

I started to get more heavily into teaching for the past two or so years and during that time, I have had numerous successes teaching students. This year, two of my students (one in-person student and one online student) will be attending music colleges in the Fall after going through a vigorous audition process. Many of the local high schools, music schools, and youth orchestra programs invite me as a guest to teach bass "sectionals" where I take the bassists aside and help them learn difficult sections in the repertoire they are preparing for an upcoming concert.

I am humbled to say that I am a graduate of the Boston Conservatory (now a part of Berklee College of Music), where I received my private training from members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra/Boston Pops Orchestra including Lawrence Wolfe and James Orleans. Before that I was in Connecticut, studying at the Hartt School of Music with Robert Black, bassist of a New York City-based ensemble called, Bang-On-A-Can, that regularly performs cutting-edge new compositions. I was able to attend both schools in part because I set the bar high for myself and worked hard to win music scholarships at the entrance auditions to both the Hartt School and Boston Conservatory. I started the bass late, at 17-years-old, practiced strategically to catch up to bassists playing far longer than me, and managed to obtain far more success than I ever expected to achieve, considering that late start.

Because of that experience, I can really show people how to practice efficiently and effectively so that they can get more accomplished and become excited about learning the bass; wanting to learn more and more. I started from scratch at 17 years old, meaning that I did not have any formal classical training prior to that age. It took one concert, a field trip with my high school to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, to convert me into an upright bassist and now I am a professional freelance orchestral bassist in a major US city.

Everyone who is familiar with my teaching personality knows that I'm passionate about what I do, I love what I do, I praise when praise is due and I am upfront with people when I tell them what needs to be fixed and how they can approach fixing it. Everyone knows that I like to figure out what is holding them back from achieving the next level in their playing and I like to make breakthroughs. Getting stuck in a learning rut can be a frustrating time and I know how to help people overcome those situations. I get the most amount of satisfaction seeing a student overwhelmed with joy because they didn't think they can play a piece in tune, or they couldn't make that big shift on the fingerboard and now, with a small adjustment to their practice approach, they are able to do all these things.

Alex is a Boston-based guitarist and educator. At the age of 17, Alex turned his musical interests from classical violin to bluegrass guitar, and has yet to reconsider. I've had 5 lessons with Alex and have already seen incredible improvement. Alex's methodology is to teach lessons but taking a song you really would like to learn, and walking you through the steps necessary to be playing it seamlessly and quickly. He throws in musical theory and other important elements of learning the instrument in there as well. I love that he always emails me a rundown of our lesson via email after the lesson so I can be reminded of things when practicing. He is extremely accommodating with his schedule, which I also really appreciate. Overall, it's been an incredibly enjoyable experience and I recommend Alex to anyone trying to learn!

I had a great experience with Alex. He is very flexible and catered each lesson to my learning style and goals. You can learn music theory, technique, and how to have fun playing music with your instrument. I kept finding that one hour flew by with the amount of music that was being played. I highly recommend to anyone on both sides of the spectrum; someone who knows exactly what they want to achieve and someone who doesn't know where to begin.
