After spending about 25 years in the financial business, I've been teaching and tutoring math for 10 years and my students have found that I'm very patient, good at explaining math concepts, and successful in increasing their confidence when dealing with math problems. Rather than just have students memorize rules or procedures, I help students derive ways to remember and understand concepts. I also help students improve their study habits and test-taking strategies.

About Jim

I changed careers from being in the investment industry to teaching and tutoring math because I believe that for many people achieving happiness and success in today's world requires strong math skills. I have always had fun with math and I am saddened when I hear people say, "I'm not good at math"

Lessons with me are highly interactive. Active learning is what I'm striving for; an engaged student can learn. As many a professor of mine has said, math is not a spectator sport. It is learned by actively engaging with the concepts and the mechanics.

I focus on finding out where the student is in terms of understanding, and meeting them intellectually wherever they may be. A lesson with me is truly where there is no such thing as a dumb question. Understanding why things are the way they are is central to my approach. Understanding is a "force multiplier" that takes a student far beyond mere rote memorization of rules that are otherwise quickly forgotten.

Of course, the goal is to be able to demonstrate understanding, which typically requires being able to solve problems. Once understanding of a concept seems to be emerging, I am happy to help guide the student through a variety of exercises to give the student the confidence that they "really get it", and can work ...

About Andrew

I am both experienced and patient as a teacher. I have clear memories of what it was like to learn new things for the first time in math, and so I empathize with the student who may be wrestling with new and different ideas. I began teaching back in college in the early 1980s, when I was a teachi

I have been helping others learn math for four years now, and I enjoy watching it click for others just as much as I enjoyed it when math first began to make sense to me. From experience, I know that mathematics can be very easy, or seemingly impossible to learn depending on how the information and concepts are presented. Whether you need help with fractions, factoring polynomials, trigonometric identities, solving triple integrals or anything in between, I can break everything down to first principles, and help you attain that deep understanding of the concepts that will get you that A on your next test.

My students can expect to learn the basics of elementary level math such as fundamentals like how to solve addition/subtraction algorithms using a variety of strategies. In addition, I would love to help with specific areas of concern such as concepts like place value, rounding, fractions, counting money and much more. I can help my students overcome any challenges and weaknesses while learning math and excel.

"Rod has been tutoring my eighth grader for the past month or so, and all I can say is that I wish we had met Rod years ago. My daughter has always struggled with math, and after several sessions with Rod I feel like the struggle was unnecessary. Even before our first session, Rod took the time to discuss exactly what our concerns and goals were and asked the type of questions that indicate a genuine interest in her success. As a former educator myself, I know that a true teacher is one that invests in the student before and after class, and that is precisely what Rod does. Not only does he assign relevant homework in between sessions, he is diligent about inquiring what her class is working on, ensuring he follows the same curriculum. He not only remembers when she has had a mid term but reaches out between sessions to find out the result. In addition to knowing how to make concepts understandable, he provides praise and encouragement, while still having high expectations and moving her steadily forward, her confidence bolstered. Before her midterm, Rod offered to adjust our schedule so that he could meet with her the night before the test. In one month's time Rod was able to prepare my daughter so effectively for her midterm, that she achieved a full grade higher than her previous assessment. If your child needs not only an academically qualified tutor, but a dedicated one, then Rod is the tutor your family needs."

"Rod worked with my daughter weekly for a couple of months leading up to the NYC state tests. With Rod's careful, concerted planning and diligence, my daughter's score went from 2.4 on the 7th grade Math state test, to a 2.8 in 8th grade, which equates to a move from below the 50th percentile, to between the 50th and 75th percentile. My daughter's in-school math instruction was chaotic and disjointed, and I attribute her improvement to Rod's intervention."

"We absolutely loved Erin. What a sweetheart! She was recommended to us by friends and we were so happy to have her work with our son, Joey. Erin helped him with his Calculus work and preparing for the ACT his senior year of high school. Joey's scores improved (ACT score went up 5 points) and there was a definite positive change in his self-confidence and attitude. Erin was dependable and went out of her way to be thorough in keeping my husband and I informed during the process. We've had quite a few tutors over the years, and sometimes it's hard to find a good one, so we were really glad we found Erin!"
