Have you ever wanted to know why a song makes us feel a certain way? How can some people listen to a song only a couple times and know how to play it? This is all rooted in music theory. From co-teaching the AP Music Theory class to studying contemporary composition at Boston University, I can help you learn the foundations for songwriting, composing, and learning music by ear.

From grade school to high school I took rigorous classical piano lessons. In 2006-07 I attended two summer programs at Berklee College of Music where I studied jazz/rock performance, and continued to study jazz piano at Washington University.
At Boston University, I studied classical music composition/theory, and was accepted to for a dual degree in Music Composition, Psychology, but decided to pursue music as a minor in order to allow more time for gigging. Since relocating to Boston, I have performed 250+ shows in various ensembles around the greater Boston area.

As your private instructor, I am here to give you the most rewarding, interesting, and enjoyable lessons in the UNIVERSE. My lessons are are catered to your specific goals and where you are at, beginner to advance, 5-1000 years old. I am here to get you to where you want to go, whether that's taking up a new hobby or becoming a virtuoso. Together, we will do it!
In our lessons we will work on:

- Writing your own music
- How to learn music by ear
- How to read music notation and chord sheets.
- How to record/produce yourself
- really, seriously, ANYTHING YOU WANT!
I know what it's like to have a teacher that is uninspiring, or to be told that a certain kind of music is the "right kind to learn," when all you want to do is jam out to your favorite songs on the radio. I've been there. That's not what I'm about. I'll teach you how to play whatever it is you want to learn, whether that's the complete works of Bach or the latest One Direction song. Let's do it.

The beginning student of Music Theory will be expected to read music, or be swiftly taught to do so. We will explore what all of the notations on a piece of music mean, and the basics of harmony and melody.
The intermediate student of Music Theory will begin working with the rules of functional harmony and explore these via composition and exercises. Ear training will also be incorporated into this lessons. We will analyze and listen to the great classical pieces to understand these principles of functional harmony.
The advanced student of Music Theory will learn when to break from the rules and how to do so coherently. We will touch on Music History to see how past composers have done so, and continue work with composition and analysis.

Learn the ins and outs and all-abouts of music theory! All types of scales, key signatures, chord construction, diatonic chords, and much, much, much more. I have a B.M. degree from Berklee College of Music and have been teaching students these ins and outs since 1982. I can help you unravel music's myriad mysteries, too!
I also have over four decades of experience as a professional jazz, rock, and theater musician. My experience has taken me from nightclubs to concert stages to churches, as well as television studios, radio stations, and many recording studios.
Finally, I am a published author with several titles dedicated to helping musicians becoming the best they can be.
**** MY TEACHING STYLE ****
My teaching style is often referred to as laid-back, gentle, informative, and very supportive. My focus is on enrichment, encouragement, and results.

I teach real music -- students begin playing music they love almost from day-one. For example, many of my piano and guitar students pride themselves on learning to play every song on the Beatles One album ... playing right along with the CD! Reading, playing by ear, improvisation (jamming), singing while you play ... there are so many ways to play and avenues to explore in music.
**** MY STUDIO ****
My studio is spacious (very spacious – no cubicles here!), well-appointed, and very quiet. Unlike music stores and multi-lesson facilities, there are no other lessons on the premises, no drummers going crazy on the other side of the wall. This means students can concentrate better and learn faster. There is also plenty of room for parents and siblings who may wish to sit in on lessons.
**** STYLES / GENRES ****
I believe that students make the most progress learning music they love and I am very happy to teach every student the style of music he or she loves most.
My most requested genres are: pop, rock, country, blues, classic rock, jazz, and classical. Some students arrive knowing exactly what they want, but most are happy to explore various styles that interest them in search of the perfect fit. It is not at all uncommon for a student to spend part of their lesson polishing up a Beethoven piece or jazz standard, then finish up playing the chords to “Hotel California” along with the CD. Another student might start off their lesson learning a Taylor Swift hit, then move over to doing some blues improvisation. Variety is a wonderful thing and it is highly encouraged!
**** MY STUDENTS ****
Over the years, I have taught students from four years old to eighty-somethings. I’ve taught absolute beginners (most of my students start from square-one), hobbyists, seasoned professionals, even a Grammy nominee and a Grammy winner! Many of my young students have gone on to perform in school bands / jazz bands and/or professionally. In all cases, they acquire a skill that will last for a lifetime and provide joy, enrichment, and satisfaction.

As a cello performance major in college, music theory courses were a requirement for my degree. Born in Minneapolis, MN, Victor Mooney began playing cello at the age of 7. While in Minneapolis he studied with Tom Austin, former member of the Minnesota Opera. Victor completed a Bachelor of Music Performance degree from Iowa State University, where he studied with George Work. Upon graduation he was awarded the Outstanding Senior in Music award, the highest honor the Music Department at Iowa State gives. While in undergrad he also received a scholarship for excellence in performance. In the fall of 2015, Victor pursued a Master's of Music degree in Cello Performance at The Boston Conservatory, where he studied with Andrew Mark. He has participated in master classes with Anthony Ross, Tanya Remenikova, Narek Hakhnazaryan, Hong Wang, Bruce Uchimura, Wes Baldwin, Theodore Buckholz, and Joshua Koestenbaum. From 2013 to 2015 he played regularly with the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra. While at Iowa State University he had the opportunity to sit Principle Cello in both the Iowa State University Symphony Orchestra and the Iowa State University Chamber Orchestra. Along with teaching privately in his Boston Studio, Victor also teaches for the Brookline Adult and Community Education Center. Outside of music, Victor enjoys reading, cooking, watching hockey and soccer, and visiting with family and friends in Minnesota.

I like to start by asking why my students are interested in learning Music Theory so that I can tailor my lesson plan toward each students personal goals and aspirations. Music Theory students can expect to work each week on understanding core music theory concepts. Some of the practice each week will include analyzing classical pieces, and writing out exercises on staff paper, but a large portion of the lesson is about applying the concepts to contemporary music and even to original compositions by the student. I teach beginner and intermediate piano students. I've been playing piano for 10+ years with a concentration in contemporary keyboard and musical theater. Depending on the needs of the student, we can work on sight reading and classical technique, or learning how to read chord sheets and tabs online in order to play contemporary songs.
As a professional touring and recording artist, I like to work songwriting into all of my lesson plans. For any student particularly interested in songwriting, I can make that a much larger portion of the lessons. Songwriting is a uniquely intimate art. Rather than tell a student how I think they should write songs, I strive to empower the student to be able to make the artistic decisions that they want. By making conscious decisions based on their musical knowledge, the student can grow his or her's own unique songwriting voice.
My personal passion is contemporary songwriting, but my own musical journey included many genres like Classical, Jazz, Blues, Folk, Theater, and more. I would not be the songwriter I am today without all these different experiences, so my goal has always been to foster passion and excitement for the material any student is learning.

I started Music Theory in high school when I first took the AP Music Theory. It was by far one of my favorite classes. I loved it so much that it pushed me to major in music and picked up a Composition major in 2014. I even became a Music Theory tutor and assistant at University of North Texas.
I am currently a semester away to graduate from Berklee College of Music. I am currently double majoring in Music Production&Engineering and Electronic Production&Design.
Before then, I was a student in University of North Texas double majoring in Flute Performance and Composition.
I have played flute since 15 years ago every week. I have won many awards as a solo artist, with an ensemble, and with an orchestra. I have been involved with Seattle Youth Symphony, PLU Orchestra, Northwestern All-State Orchestra, and more.
Besides being a flute player, I am a Music Producer, Recording Engineer, and a Beatmaker. I have been in this industry for 4 years and landed a position as a Head Engineer of an R&B Ens
