I design lessons individually according to the needs and "wants" of each student. I specialize in developing and correcting technique in technique to improve the student's overall skill. Students that dedicate the time and effort each week to practicing see rapid and sustained results.
However, if you have a busy life and merely want to learn guitar for personal enjoyment, I will design your lessons to develop your skill at a pace that works for you, which can fluctuate according to your schedule.
***Young & Special Needs Students***
I teach children as young as 13 years old and adults to the age of 70 years old. When teaching younger children and individuals with special needs, it is significantly beneficial for parents to attend each lesson - I have parent seating available. When parent(s) attend lessons, the parent can assist the younger student while practicing during the week at home.
In my experience, the overall musical development and progress of younger students improve considerably when parents are involved.
***Thoughts on Musical Talent***
Musical talent is a wonderful gift, but correct technique is not easily acquired without proper instruction. Your skill level eventually plateaus and your ability to learn and perform more complicated music is inhibited, unless you have a solid foundation in music theory as it applies to your instrument(s) as well as proper technique.
I can help you build this solid foundation and will guide you through the development of musical skills; correcting flaws in technique is my specialty.

I received my masters in social work from walla walla university in 2012. My thesis was on stress levels of police officers. In addition I have received my bachelors in history, where my paper on Air Cavalry in the Vietnam war won many accolades of my history professors.
My students can expect me to be fair and honest. Just as my professors were with me. A well written papers speaks volumes and I am passionate about mentoring young writers. Hard work and diligence are some of the words that my professors and friends would use to describe me. I will give all my resources to help students reach their potential. I currently play with four symphonies, chamber groups and substitute for other symphonies throughout Washington state. Because I have been through so many audition processes I feel as though I have excellent insight into the process. I would be able to assist my students in a process that can possibly be one of the most stressful events of their professional lives.
My string studies began at the age of age of eight with Jim O'Brian (served in Army orchestra). Following graduation from Kamiakin High School in 1998, I was accepted into the University of Iowa's school of music. However, I decided to stay close to home and study at Columbia Basin College. It was there that I met my next professor Robert Burroughs. My other university string professors included Maria Zlateva (graduated from University of Texas at Austin), Dr. Philip Baldwin, and Dr. John Marshall who is currently principal cellist of the Spokane Symphony.
My style of teaching is the Suzuki method or string basics. I was raised on the Suzuki method and have found that it provides an excellent foundation for string players. Many of my students have found this helpful with their technique and music theory. My youngest student participated in a talent show with their orchestra last year. Through her hard work and determination she was able to gain a substantial amount of information prior to entering junior high.
What sets me apart from other teachers is that I am strictly a viola instructor. Many viola teachers list themselves as violinists as well. I believe this has helped me because I understand the physical and mental challenges that "we" violists face on a daily basis. I feel privileged knowing that very few people can read alto clef and play such a beautiful instrument. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, don't hesitate to ask me a question.
