About Kareem
A native of the Pacific Northwest, saxophonist Kareem K is a performer, composer, and educator, who is in high demand for his talents both on and off the stage.

Growing up in the northwest with its vibrant music scene allowed Kareem the opportunity to study with, listen to and perform with world class jazz artists residing in the area. Artists such as Tracy Knoop, Jay Thomas, Don Lanphere, Bill Ramsay, Hadley Caliman, Julian Priester and many others had a large impact on Kareem early in his musical education. This direction and guidance continues to inspire and lead Kareem as he continues his lifelong passion undertaking a career as a professional musician.

Today, as a performing artist he spends most of his time leading his group for which he composes and arranges most of the music. The band is constantly on the move as a sought af
ter performing group and spends most of its time performing in and around the Pacific Northwest. When not leading his own group Kareem can be seen and heard performing as a sideman with many other top notch musical acts and projects, most notably The Paperboys from Vancouver BC.

As an educator Kareem divides his time teaching jazz improvisation as an artist in residence at The Tacoma School of the Arts, directing the award winning student jazz ensemble at Pierce College, conducting masterclasses and workshops at schools around the Puget Sound area, and maintaining a full load of private students. Along with his teaching duties Kareem is the director or The Tacoma Jazz Association, serves on the Tacoma Arts Commission, and is a D'Addario Woodwinds performing artist.

Kareem holds a Bachelors Degree of Music from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle Washington which he attended after receiving a full scholarship.

Throughout his years of teaching Kareem has worked with students of all ages and abilities, from beginners just getting started, to advanced players who simply want new ideas and direction.

Lessons are relaxed and are focused on what you would like to learn.

I usually begin with assessing where students are in their abilities and then come up with a lesson plan based on what they already know and what they would like to accomplish.
They can be geared towards a 5 year old with no musical training whatsoever, or to an advanced musician who wants to further develop their skills.

Topics that I cover in lessons throughout a typical day of teaching include: Instrument technique, sight reading skills ( note and rhythm recognition ), memorization skills, music theory, ear training, improvising, and composing.

After 3 to 6 months of lessons and regular practice a beginning student should have a good command of their instrument and a strong foundation of sight reading. At this point we normally will also have started some music theory as well. For students wanting to focus on jazz we will have already begun improvising as well.

*** Studio Equipment ***
5x10 room w/ piano and seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
I focus on the basics of learning to read music and basic technique on the instruments that I teach. From there I proceed with theory, ear training, improvising, composition etc. It all depends on what the students want to learn. I am comfortable teaching classical music as well as jazz, rock, composition, and improvisation.

I've played saxophone for about 18 years. I enjoy teaching all levels of saxophone students! Saxophone is a fun and versatile instrument.

About Tina
Hello!

I've been teaching private lessons for over 15 years. I was a high school music teacher & band director in the Philadelphia area for 7 years, and I now live in Miami, FL where I am working on a doctoral degree in conducting. I also work as a freelance musician. I'm looking forward to making music with you!

Your lesson specifics are up to you! If you know what you want to learn, I'll help get you there. If you don't know where to start, I can lead you through the fundamentals and help you set goals.

I like to keep things positive in music lessons. Music is, after all, for fun and enjoyment! I like to blend teaching technique and musicianship, while keeping things fun.

If you're a beginner, we'll get started with all the fundamentals you need to begin making music. If you've been playing for a while, I'll help you perfect
things you've been working on, expand your musical experience, and help you reach your fullest potential as a musician.

Online lessons are a wonderful option! I am flexible with scheduling and allow changes up to 24-hours before a scheduled lesson. My home studio has chairs, music stand, and areas for parents to sit in on lessons. Garage band is available for recording. Students need an instrument and books.

You can learn to play anything on the saxophone if you know the right practice methods! I've been playing saxophone for over 10 years, and I earned a bachelor's degree in music 14 years ago with a woodwind proficiency. I want you to learn the proper technique, understand what it means to make music, excel in reading music, and enjoy the ability to play by ear. All of these are important to the well-rounded musician.

About Jason
I graduated with my music degree (woodwind proficiency) in 2003. While in college, I studied under a teacher who was a student of Mike Guerra, widely recognized in his generation as one of the greatest technique instructors on clarinet and saxophone.

After graduation, I went on to teach private lessons for two years on the high school and college level, after which I took a position at a church as music director. I taught lessons, directed choirs, and organized music performances for twelve years before moving to Washington. I'm now in my first year of specific focus on private instruction.

I've learned that proper technique, sight reading, playing by ear, and listening to great artists are all critical to becoming a well-rounded musician. I would love to help you find the same love for music and the clarinet that I've found!

A
little about me: I've been happily married since 2003, and I have four children 12 and under. I love a large variety of music and I love the outdoors.

I did not take private lesson from Jason, but was in the church choir that he directed. As a director he was excellent. He was very easy to follow. Our choir improved tremendously under his direction. His ear for music is amazing. He can pick out the parts of a piece of music that need work and works with the singers to get the part right. I know some of the students he taught at our church and they always talked highly of him and how easy it was to work with him. I have also heard him play the clarinet and the clari-sax and the saxophone. He is a phenomenal performer. I would have my child take lessons from him anytime.

I want to make sure that you learn not only how to play the saxophone, but that you also have a firm grasp on everything else that goes into great musicianship! If you'd like, I can bring a strong emphasis on music theory, so that you can better understand and appreciate the music you are learning. On top of theory, I would love to open up the opportunity for you to compose your own pieces. I also want you to have a good understanding of how your instrument actually is working, physically speaking — my goal is to make you a well rounded musician!

I prefer to have you learn real repertoire versus working from a methods book, because I want you to be excited about the music you are learning. I will let you explore the rep that you want, from medieval to contemporary, as well as non-western. Contemporary classical music is my specialty, and I'd be more than happy to dive into this with you!

About Kevin
Hello! My name's Kevin, and I'm a composer/musician based in Brooklyn. I went to the College of William and Mary where I studied both music and physics. Following that, I received a master's degree focusing in music composition from the University of Chicago.

I would love to help you have a stronger understanding of your instrument and music in general! I started playing clarinet in the 8th grade, and continued playing all through high school, undergrad, and grad school. Clarinet is my primary instrument, but before clarinet I began saxophone, and before saxophone, I began piano. Music has been a central part of my life for such a long time, and I can't imagine life without it!

My primary career pursuit is music composition, so I would love to dive into some music theory with each piece that you learn. I feel that understanding the mu
sic itself builds a stronger appreciation for the act of playing music. I have written a lot of pieces for myself on clarinet, and would be thrilled to help you on your own compositions if that is something your interested in. Contemporary classical music is my passion, but I want to help you explore the repertoire that fascinates you.

I am an award-winning saxophonist with experience teaching students from beginning elementary to advanced high school levels. My style of teaching is interdisciplinary, tailored to each student's needs and goals, and focuses on artistry and technique equally. Students should expect to not only see noticeable progress in their first few lessons, but also develop the skills and knowledge to grow into competent and compelling musicians ready to leave their mark on the world!

About Soren
After a decade of studying and performing music around the country, I have recently returned to my roots in the Puget Sound region! I hold an MM from Bowling Green State University and a BM from the University of Oregon, both degrees in music performance but focusing specifically on the saxophone.

Every saxophonist has a unique sound, unique aspirations, and a unique musical identity. I believe that with focused regular practice, a solid grasp of technique/sound concept, and clear personal goals, students can take ownership of this identity and reach their full potential in any style or genre. I happily teach all ages and ability levels; my students have ranged from beginning fourth grader, to high school senior preparing for music in college.

My background is primarily in classical and contemporary music. I regularly take on a wi
de variety of performance projects, from traditional saxophone fare to the avant-garde. Recent performances include:

-radio broadcasts on KING FM, WGTE FM (Toledo, OH), and the nationally distributed program Performance Today;
-guest recitals at Ball State University and Fredonia State University of New York;
-new music festivals across the Midwest;
-a tour of public schools and remote community centers throughout western Washington; and
-Diving Santa at the Seattle Aquarium.

I am also passionate about chamber ensembles. Currently, I perform with a flute/saxophone/French horn trio, which, in less than a year together, has commissioned 6 new works for this new combination of instruments. One of the greatest joys in music is the special bond we make with others -- musicians, composers, and audiences -- through the creation of new music. I live for this joy, and strive to pass it on to each of my students.

Please message me before purchasing lessons! TakeLessons does not allow messages between you purchasing and me accepting new lessons. I am more than happy to answer any questions, and look forward to meeting you and helping you/your child become a better musician!

I am now following my musical passions and, besides playing saxophone regularly, I also am a singing pianist that plays at various piano-bar/restaurants in New York.

I began playing saxophone and piano in the 2nd grade. I was a member of the New York State ‐ All State Jazz Band in High school. I performed regularly at Ossining High School where I was a member of the elite Woodwind Ensemble and played 1st alto sax and flute in the Jazz Big Band and Jazz Workshop ensembles. I also performed periodically in Westchester County and New York City with groups from the Lagond Music School where I studied and had taught privately starting in 2003.

At an ea

I studied saxophone, flute and clarinet privately with Jon Irabagon (winner of the 2008 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition) and with Charlie Lagond at the Lagond Music School in Elmsford, New York.

During High School I was a regular attendee at the SUNY Summer Jazz Institute in Purchase, New York where I had the privilege of attending Master Classes led by Ralph Lalama and played alto sax in workshop ensembles led by Ralph as well as Doug Munro, Jon Gordon and Charles Blenzig.

In college, at New York University, I had the distinct pleasure of working with musical masters, Lenny Pickett, Chris Potter, Kenny Werner, Rich Perry, John Scofield, Wayne Krantz, to name a few. My time at NYU helped me hone my creativity and prowess as an artist.
