Viola:
A stringed instrument that is bowed or played with varying techniques. It is slightly larger than a violin and has a lower and deeper sound. Since the 18th century it has been the middle or alto voice of the violin family, between the violin (which is tuned a perfect fifth above) and the cello (which is tuned an octave below. The strings from low to high are generally tuned to C3, G3, D4, and A4. My lessons always start out with the basics! We start out by learning notes by plucking the strings and then the bow is soon incorporated. The goal is to eventually learn all the notes on the fretboard and also learning how to read and play chords. As the student progresses advanced techniques are introduced, music theory and learning how to solo.

Karen is an incredibly skillful teacher. She is very passionate about music and it easy to be comfortable with her. She shares her training and knowledge very clearly. The vocal exercises seem very unique and holistic for body and voice health. She is very encouraging, caring, and soul-uplifting. I feel like I have a new connection with my voice and all that is connected to using it... as an instrument and the journey is only just starting. 45 minutes went by so fast. I am looking forward to my next lessons.

I thought I wanted to take viola lessons. Then I read her website and I realized that she might be able to help me get my voice back! I thought there was no hope ever. She has been extremely generous with her time, and I haven't seen her yet, but I'm not buying the viola I was planning on buying. I play cello, and piano still, but I am going to see if she can help me with my voice. She sounds incredible. I never dreamed that I could even have HOPE like this!

I am a professional violinist and violist in the Boston area. I am a graduate of the New England Conservatory where I have studied with Miriam Fried, Donald Weilerstein, and Martha Katz. I have performed extensively throughout my life as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player on both the violin and viola in a variety of professional ensembles including substitute viola work with the Borromeo String Quartet. I draw from this performing background to teach my students of all ages and abilities.

I currently act as Adjunct Instructor of Violin and Viola at Merrimack College, where I serve as a primary instrumental teacher to enrolled students. I have also acted as the primary violin teacher for Main Street Music, LLC, in Waltham. Additionally, I run a private studio of 5-10 students as young as 6 and as old as 60. Of these, some never touched an instrument before our first lesson, and some are serious conservatory-bound musicians intending to make a career as a performer.

Luther loves to teach. At every lesson he is there for you, ready to help you. He has an extensive musical background, after studying violin at New England Conservatory with Meriam Fried and Donald Weilerstein, as well as performing and studying at many prestigious summer music festivals, including Ravinia’s Steans Institute, the Perlman Music Program Chamber Music Workshop, the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, and the Taos School of Music. In addition, Luther is an excellent violist, studying with Martha Katz, also at New England Conservatory.

Luther loves to answer all of your questions. He will analyze and dissect your technical questions about how to play the violin: concerning tone, bowing, left hand issues, and how to use your arms, shoulders, back and your whole body while playing the instrument. He can help you with fingering and answer your questions about written music. He will demonstrate and help you play musically. He is able prepare you for your orchestral audition, help you learn concertos and other solo music and help you with chamber music. Thanks Luther for continuing to help me attain my dream to become an excellent violinist!

I had my first lesson with Luther today. He is personable, informative, gave constructive feedback and encouraged me. I found his style of instruction helpful.
I’m looking forward to my next lesson with him.

It's a blaze to work with Luther! He identified my problem very quickly and provided concrete advices on improving the sound. His understanding on how beautiful sound is made is very clear and systematic. There are so many dimensions in the sound making for violin but he always breaks it down and works on each individual part of my postures and bowing. My sound is now much fuller than before! He also not only teaches violin but also how to think about music in general. I feel like I am constantly critically thinking on how I can experiment with each phrase after I take lessons with Luther. I will highly recommend Luther if you want to find a violin teacher!

Music making is the ultimate form of communication, it transcends languages and speaks directly to emotions. My goal is that each student will understand this method of communication and discover their individual way of communicating through the viola or violin. This is achieved through a supportive learning environment where students feel free to experiment with their personal musicality while also honing technical skills necessary for viola and violin playing.

Students will learn to read music proficiently, in alto clef, read and play rhythms, and play all major and minor scales and arpeggios. Along with music reading, students will learn technical skills pertinent to viola and violin such as intonation, sound production, shifting, vibrato, and various bow strokes and patterns. These skills are crucial for making music with other musicians; therefore form the core elements of private lesson learning. While the learning outcomes are similar for many students, I tailor my teaching ...

Green is a dedicated, caring professional who quickly connected with our daughter and developed an ongoing plan to facilitate her growth and development as a musician. Green is well-prepared for each lesson, and communicates expectations clearly with encouragement, challenge, and appropriate support to our child. Our daughter says that studying violin is fun again, and possibly more than ever! We have observed a great measure of improvement just in these last 3 months of lessons with Green, and are so thankful for her musical mentorship to our daughter. You will be blessed and very grateful to enroll with Green while she still has space for students in her teaching schedule. I predict that one day soon there will be a long waiting list and many flourishing young artists benefiting from their study with a world-class talent and first-rate person.

About Hannah

After studying piano for almost 10 years I decided to learn a new instrument and began taking violin lessons when I was 16 years old. In spite of being told that I was “too old” to learn to play the violin, I continued practicing and one year later I joined my first orchestra. In 2011 I moved to Bo

Great experience

She did a wonderful job teaching Tara. Tara's viola technique really improved this year thanks to Dorothy's patience and hard work. Dorothy never missed a lesson and always came prepared for the next challenge. I must admit that I was hesitant to find a teacher using an on-line service but, Ihave been extremely pleased with our instructor and will miss Dorothy's guidance in our viola lessons.

Feedback for Dorothy

Dorothy has fabulous teacher. She is easy to learn from and doesnt get anoyed when you dont get things on the first try. This is great because as an adult I dont learn as quickly. Also, I am a college student (age 20) and she works with my school and work schedules. I really cant say how pleased I am with the quality of her teaching.

"Kendra is an amazing viola teacher. Since this was my first online lesson ever, I was skeptical at first. However, Kendra's kindness and positive attitude assured me that I had made the right decision. She covers many aspects of both the technical parts of handling the viola, as well as perfecting intonation and handling a wide variety of styles of music. She also is attentive to specific needs, and accomodates for different paths depending on individual goals. Thanks for all you do for me Kendra!"

"I just completed my first lesson with Elisa. I felt so good at the end of the lesson. As an adult learner, I am often uncomfortable with my beginner skill levels and end up feeling embarrassed and apologetic when working with a teacher (silly I know). But she did not make me feel this way at all.

She quickly assessed where I was with my playing and identified quick and easy technical practices to enhance my technique as well as took in my own personal goals. I feel super motivated to practice and look forward to my next lesson with her. I'm so glad I found her!"

"Megan is so pleasant and fun! She has strong focus on technique, and explains these practices in a way I can understand. Since I am a beginner, and adult learner, it's important that my music teacher is patient and cheers me along throughout the process - Megan definitely has that gift. I also appreciate that she writes down technique tips and exercises for me to practice at home (so I remember what she taught me in class.) I'm looking forward to continuing to learn from Megan, and play music beautifully on my Viola one day."
