My name is David, and I am a music teacher of many different subjects. These include guitar, piano, bass, ukulele, recording, music theory, production, composition and film music composition.

All styles, and all ages. Classical, Rock, Alternative, Slide Guitar, Blues, Jazz, and more!

I have a Masters Degree in music from The University of Melbourne in Australia, as well as having the distinction of a Bachelors Degree in Music from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle.

I had been playing guitar for about 5 years and had only been self taught. I found myself completely stuck playing the same chords and not able to play riffs or solos at all. I love guitar period, but it's overtly frustrating when you have no idea where to start, or how to play at all. I went through multiple guitar instructors trying to learn how to play and each of them weren't very specific, or didn't hone in on any one thing at a time so you could really start to get it down and process it. I have had 4 different Blues guitar Teacher in the last 6 months, getting nowhere as far as really playing some Blues until I ran across David. The other teachers just wanted me to learn the pentatonic scales, Major and Minor. That took a lot of boring weeks and I am sure I will need to know those scales but I just wanted someone to show / teach me Blues chords, related to Blues songs and the timing to the chord changes so I could start playing some kind of Blues. I have had 6 one hour lessons so far with David and I am playing the Blues. The first 4 hours Dave showed me a E, A, B7 blues chord progression with some step up and step down notes. The 2nd 2 hours Dave showed me a A, D9, A7,E9 Blues chords and Blues timing with slides.

I take one hour Lessons every Thursday and in 6 hours I am playing the Blues. I picked up the guitar about 6 months ago, started teaching myself and not really getting anywhere. I am not a fast learner, about average in learning something new. Now I set a home Learning my guitar and polishing the Blues songs that David has taught me, starting to get FUN.

“I started receiving lessons from David a few years ago, to improve my guitar abilities. I always used to tell people, "I've been playing guitar since the Eighties, though you would never know it." At the time I started, I knew some Metal riffs, three-chord Punk Rock progressions, and simple 12-bar blues. Though I took two guitar classes and first-year Music Theory in college in the early Nineties, the only scale I could say I knew was "blues pentatonic," emphasis on the quotation marks.

My goal was to relearn Modes/Scales, and brush up on theory, so that I could write more complex material. David taught me that, and so much more. Over these few years, I've learned Progressive Rock, Fusion/Jazz, and even some Country styles, as well as a great deal more about Metal and, yes, even Punk from David. He has also helped me read music better, construct more professional-sounding compositions, and has started me on my own path to produce my own recordings, from recommending and using recording software, to capturing dynamics with mic placement, to mixing the rough takes to get the most out of the sound.

For a musician of any level or caliber, having an instructor like David is a true asset--for he has the knowledge and skills to take an entry-level musician every step of the way to becoming a professional performer, recorder, mixer, engineer, and producer. The only limit to the lesson's potential is your own level of determination, which David quite expertly helps you to improve with every session. Even if your goal is to simply learn to play one song on one instrument--and David teaches MANY instruments--he will have you playing that song like the musician who wrote it before you realize it--as long as you stick with your practice between lessons. I have had one lesson with David, and it is enough to tell that he is a great teacher. He clearly knows how to play guitar. He is both encouraging and firm. He explained to me the expectations for my practice and what he wants me to learn by next week, but was also very understanding whenever I made a mistake. I told him about my experience in other hobbies, and from that he was able to use analogies that made sense to me that would help me learn the techniques he was teaching. I am very happy to have David as my guitar teacher.

*** Lesson Details ***
Within a lesson, students can expect to be given instruction on developing proper technique. (scales, chords, basic music theory etc). The learning environment will be laid back and fun, with the student and teacher setting goals together, and reasonable expectations will be held for both the student and teacher.

Jean will ask what it is in particular that the student is wanting to learn, and will seek to develop curriculum centered around the student's goals. Weekly practice (5 days a week, 20-30 minutes a day) will be the encouraged minimum. This will vary slightly depending on individual student needs.

Students will have the opportunity to learn to play music by composers such as Mozart and Bach. They can also learn how to play movie soundtracks, tunes from their favorite Broadway or Disney songs, and more! Vocal students will have the opportunity to learn show tunes, Italian arias, German songs, praise and worship songs, their favorites from musicals, and more.

Jean is a phenomenal teacher! My 14 year old son Ethan had started lessons with her 6 months ago and with her guidance he has learned piano super fast. I enjoy working with most of my students, especially those who practice hard. I find all students unique and they response differently to my requests or questions. I feel that very often I need to react spontaneously to their responses. For the beginners I mainly focus on reading musical notes and learning correct rhythmic values. With beginners who haven’t played the piano at all I teach finger exercises written finger numbers only. Then I use Piano Adventures theory, lesson, technique and artistry, performance, and popular music books. Although Alfred’s and Bastien’s methods are well known, I prefer Piano Adventures because they introduce the coordination of right and left hand in more progressive manner. At the beginning the following will be covered.
• Postures at the piano, finger numbers, high and low on the keyboard
• Music alphabet, Intervals
• Musical form, Dynamic marks
• Staff; line notes, space notes

I was born and raised in S. Korea. I studied piano performance at Cleveland Institute of Music and University of Iowa and hold DMA in piano performance and pedagogy from University of Iowa. Other than music I hold BS in Computer Science from State University of New York, Albany. I began to play the piano when I was six and won prizes from the local competitions sponsored by Daegu Board of Education and Dague Division of Korean Musicians Association. I performed in major cities in Korea, the US and Europe such as Seoul, Paris, Vienna, Cleveland and Philadelphia. I participated in The Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition during my last year at University of Iowa and was mentioned by the judges as a technically very good pianist. For additional studies I participated in Aspen Music School and Music Festival, Claude Elffere's Master
Class (Paris, France), Mozarteum Summer School and Music Festival (Salzburg, Austria) and Vienna Music Seminar (Vienna, Austria). I was awarded scholarship when I attended Cleveland Inctitute of Music and Aspen Music School. My teachers include Jinsook Kim, Donald Walker, Paul Schenly, Gabriel Chodos, Viktor Teuflmayr, Claude Elffere, Anne Epperson, and Vivian Hornik Weilestein.
Previously I was a rehearsal pianist of operas, II pagliacci by Leoncavallo with Daegu Opera, Snatched by the Gods and Broken Strings by Param Vir with University of Iowa Theatre department, and contemporary operas based on the works by Francesca Cavalli with Temple University Opera. Other than operas I worked with Missoula Children’s Theatre for the performance of Aladdin. As a collaborative pianist I performed in numerous concerts and performed in master classes of Joseph Silverstein, Steven Isserlis, Julliard Quartet, Isaac Stern and Richard Stoltzman. I have been teaching piano at the university settings (University of Iowa and Catholic University of Daegu) or privately for 10+ years. Recently I taught at Half Note Music School in Bellevue, WA and was a pianist at St. Columba's Episcopal Church and United Christian Church in Renton, WA.

I am a passionate multi-instrumentalist.

If you'd like to try out a teacher who truly loves what they do, I may be right selection. My primary instrument is piano, though I play several others such as flute, clarinet, guitar and violin. I am most proficient on piano, flute, clarinet and guitar so I feel more comfortable teaching these instruments in order to give students the best possible musical foundation. All students are welcome to learn from me, and I have a soft spot and understanding for special needs students.

Music has been in my life since I was a young child, as my grandfather who was proficient on both organ and clarinet
, taught me how to read music and play keyboard. Music is something that can never escape my life! I practice my instruments on a daily basis and avidly compose my own music as well. Besides being involved with piano at school, I was a member of the William Paterson Symphony Orchestra where I played second violin, as well as a member of the school's flute ensemble. I am someone who truly has a passionate love for music, as it is what my whole life is about and brings me immense happiness on a daily basis. I am a college level jazz musician.
My primary instruments are jazz guitar and upright bass.
Growing up I have always wanted to sing but never could find a qualified teacher.

Luckily, after extensive research online for vocal teachers I discovered Kara.
I have been taking lessons with her for a while now and she's wonderful.
I always have many questions for her in my lessons and she always has a knowledgable response.

I feel like I'm progressing and finally learning how to sing properly with someone who knows their stuff.

My own proficiency in music theory and technique drives each student's lesson that they may have a proper foundation from which expression is born. My educational philosophy does not reduce music to a mere hobby, nor does it apply rigorous standards that discourage pupils: rather, I open up students' minds to the joy of music, and its necessity in education.

As a classically trained musician, I focus on technique, theory, music history, composition, and performance in my lessons. I received my Bachelors of Arts at the University of Dallas in English and Music and began teaching lessons shortly after. In addition to teaching, I dedicate my life to art, literature, poetry, and maintaining curiosity.

Before I am a teacher, I am first and foremost, a performer. I believe this puts me at an advantage as a music teacher because I not only have formal training to educate, but I also have the experience of performing. I know how music involves our passions, emotions, our dreams and our fears, that all our complexities as human beings can perfectly be communicated through music. This is why I turn to performance time and time again. I went into this very nervous as an adult trying to work on my singing to accompany my guitar playing. She really made me feel at home and comfortable. I improved drastically and get cheers when I do karaoke even now. She even helped me improve my musicianship while playing guitar and singing. My confidence is at an all time high. I highly recommend her.

Do you want to learn about jazz piano, improvisation, harmony, composition, arranging, and be able to sit in at a jam session anywhere in New York City or in your hometown? I’m thankful that I’ve had the opportunity to go through all of these exciting steps in the life of a musician myself, and I’m definitely looking forward to sharing this experience with you. I began to learn jazz piano in Paris (France) as a teenager, and later attended Berklee College of Music in Boston on a full tuition scholarship. I recently moved to New York City to continue to grow as an artist in this utterly inspiring metropolis, full of talent and creativity.

REPERTOIRE

The repertoire studied during the lessons can be as vast as jazz is diverse. I curate a playlist on Spotify you can dig into entitled “FunJazz Piano Lessons”, which is a selection of standards, jazz tunes, latin tunes, rhythm changes, blues, and ballads performed by a wealth of diverse musicians, and covering a wide range of styles and eras. In fact, exploitable melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic elements for the purpose of these lessons can be drawn from most music, within and beyond the scope of jazz… I’m therefore open to – and encourage – students’ suggestions: practicing a piece one actually knows and enjoys can be a strong motivational factor and often enhances the learning experience.
