I am a professional violinist and violist in the Boston area. I am a graduate of the New England Conservatory where I have studied with Miriam Fried, Donald Weilerstein, and Martha Katz. I have performed extensively throughout my life as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player on both the violin and viola in a variety of professional ensembles including substitute viola work with the Borromeo String Quartet. I draw from this performing background to teach my students of all ages and abilities.

I currently act as Adjunct Instructor of Violin and Viola at Merrimack College, where I serve as a primary instrumental teacher to enrolled students. I have also acted as the primary violin teacher for Main Street Music, LLC, in Waltham. Additionally, I run a private studio of 5-10 students as young as 6 and as old as 60. Of these, some never touched an instrument before our first lesson, and some are serious conservatory-bound musicians intending to make a career as a performer.

Luther loves to teach. At every lesson he is there for you, ready to help you. He has an extensive musical background, after studying violin at New England Conservatory with Meriam Fried and Donald Weilerstein, as well as performing and studying at many prestigious summer music festivals, including Ravinia’s Steans Institute, the Perlman Music Program Chamber Music Workshop, the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, and the Taos School of Music. In addition, Luther is an excellent violist, studying with Martha Katz, also at New England Conservatory.

Luther loves to answer all of your questions. He will analyze and dissect your technical questions about how to play the violin: concerning tone, bowing, left hand issues, and how to use your arms, shoulders, back and your whole body while playing the instrument. He can help you with fingering and answer your questions about written music. He will demonstrate and help you play musically. He is able prepare you for your orchestral audition, help you learn concertos and other solo music and help you with chamber music. Thanks Luther for continuing to help me attain my dream to become an excellent violinist!

I had my first lesson with Luther today. He is personable, informative, gave constructive feedback and encouraged me. I found his style of instruction helpful.
I’m looking forward to my next lesson with him.

It's a blaze to work with Luther! He identified my problem very quickly and provided concrete advices on improving the sound. His understanding on how beautiful sound is made is very clear and systematic. There are so many dimensions in the sound making for violin but he always breaks it down and works on each individual part of my postures and bowing. My sound is now much fuller than before! He also not only teaches violin but also how to think about music in general. I feel like I am constantly critically thinking on how I can experiment with each phrase after I take lessons with Luther. I will highly recommend Luther if you want to find a violin teacher!

Violin:
A wooden stringed instrument in the violin family; it is the smallest and highest-pitched. The violin typically has four strings tuned in perfect fifths, and is most commonly played by drawing a bow across its strings, though it can also be played by plucking the strings with the fingers (pizzicato). Violins are important instruments in a wide variety of musical genres. They are most prominent in the Western classical tradition and in many varieties of folk music. They are also frequently used in genres of folk including country music and bluegrass music and in jazz. Electric violins are used in some forms of rock music; further, the violin has come to be played in many non-Western music cultures, including Indian music and Iranian music. The violin is sometimes informally called a fiddle, particularly in Irish traditional music and bluegrass, but this nickname is also used regardless of the type of music played on it.
Lessons always start with the basics: Tuning, hand/bow

Karen is an incredibly skillful teacher. She is very passionate about music and it easy to be comfortable with her. She shares her training and knowledge very clearly. The vocal exercises seem very unique and holistic for body and voice health. She is very encouraging, caring, and soul-uplifting. I feel like I have a new connection with my voice and all that is connected to using it... as an instrument and the journey is only just starting. 45 minutes went by so fast. I am looking forward to my next lessons.

I thought I wanted to take viola lessons. Then I read her website and I realized that she might be able to help me get my voice back! I thought there was no hope ever. She has been extremely generous with her time, and I haven't seen her yet, but I'm not buying the viola I was planning on buying. I play cello, and piano still, but I am going to see if she can help me with my voice. She sounds incredible. I never dreamed that I could even have HOPE like this!

After studying piano for almost 10 years I decided I wanted to learn a new instrument and began taking violin lessons when I was 16 years old. In spite of people telling me that I was “too old” to learn to play the violin, I continued practicing and one year later I joined my first orchestra. In 20

I’ve been taking online lessons from Connie for 6 months now and couldn’t be happier. She helped me develop a good foundation and has been so encouraging along the way! I love that she pays attention to detail and goes out of her way to write weekly lesson notes, make recordings for me, adds in music theory and is helping me towards my first exam. Connie’s passion for music and teaching is evident and I’m thankful I found her online!

My son has been taking lessons from Connie and we love having her as his teacher! She helps him with his confidence playing solo and also working through school orchestra music... he’s now one of the more advanced in his group! Connie focuses on the details to set up a good foundation and has been great helping him with some bad habits he devolved years ago. She has lots of experience with every age group and teaches all the way through very advanced level. Thankful she came recommended to us!
Jeanne
She's very good. Very patient and clear. She'll tailor the lessons to your level of understanding. I'm an older adult learner with no musical knowledge at all and am learning fast thanks to her. I look forward to continuing my lessons.

"Evan has transformed my life. As a concert pianist and a former student trainee of Opera Memphis, I have had innumerable music teachers throughout my life. However, I have never had a teacher like Evan. He took me from absolute beginner - starting with learning how to even hold a violin - to decently proficient in a relatively short amount of time. He tailors his instruction in such a way that each student can understand. He has enormously high standards but he inspires students to achieve them. Evan's lessons are incredibly convenient, located close to a metro and with flexible hours to accomodate a hectic work schedule.

I cannot overstate what a transformative impact meeting Evan has had on my life. It's made me a better musician in all of my instruments, because he instills a deeper understanding of theory and musicianship. Violin is a challenging instrument, if not the most challenging, but Evan skillfully guides students to mastery. Randomly deciding to buy a violin and doing a quick search for local teachers one day was the best decision I've ever made, and it's all because of Evan. I can't imagine life without my violin teacher!"

"Our family cannot speak highly enough of Miriam-Rose and her talent and teaching ability. She is still, by far, our 10-year-old daughter's favorite IU student violin teacher. Miriam-Rose has such a gift for being an incredibly patient and supportive teacher, yet she is firm and affective in her corrections. Our daughter learned so much in just the short time she was instructed by her. She is such a caring, friendly and fun person with lots of energy, and you can tell she loves what she does by the way she teaches. She will be a blessing to any student she instructs. We have two other daughters that also know her from the ballet world and she is known there as well for her talent, teaching and friendliness, which I think speaks volumes for the individual that she is. She is just an all-around wonderful and talented person who also happens to be a very gifted teacher. Students of any age will learn so much from her! We so appreciate what she has done for our family!!"
