I'm a first generation half-Japanese American currently living in Boston, MA! I spent my childhood surrounded by Japanese language and culture, followed by 7 years of formal language training, culminating in a Japanese language minor at the University of Washington. My thesis focused on the manifestation of gender in Japanese performing arts.

Growing up bilingual, I understand the difficulty of trying to juggle two languages! Whether you want to learn a new language, or simply want to brush up on your Japanese skills, I am always happy to be of help! Lessons include reading, writing, listening, translating literature, and speaking (polite, casual, and formal styles). I use the Genki and Tobira books and also like to introduce students to classic and modern Japanese literature as a way to enhance the students’ cultural knowledge. I welcome beginning and intermediate Japanese students!

Great first lesson Mona. I learned quite a bit during my first lesson. She made me feel comfortable speaking Japanese which is what I've struggled with the most.

As a native Japanese speaker, who has spent the last 30 years in the United States, I understand the structural and grammatical differences in the two languages. This gives me both the teacher’s and the student’s perspectives, which I find valuable as a language instructor.

I have taught Japanese to college students and adults, using beginning Japanese textbooks, and I am most comfortable teaching high school/college students and adults.
I can also teach conversational Japanese and/or customize the lesson to meet each student’s particular goals and needs.

Send me a message to find out if we are a good match!

I am a native Japanese speaker from Tokyo. I have served as an instructor at the Greater Louisville Regional Japanese Saturday School, which provides courses entirely in Japanese. I have helped students prepare for JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test) and the Japan Kanji Aptitude Test (Kanji Kentei). Whether you want to improve your reading or writing skills, or you are simply looking for a conversation partner, let me know!

If you are not sure if Japanese lessons are for you, I recommend signing up for shorter lessons first and then switch to longer lessons if you enjoy it:-) I would love to hear from you. Thank you!

"Prior to the beginning of my lessons with Taro, I had little to no knowledge of Japanese, so I took weekly lessons for Japanese lessons for a little over half a year, and I am proud to say that I feel confident in my understanding of the basics in Japanese grammar and knowledge. He was excellent in adapting to my learning goals and ensuring that I received what I expected from every lesson. I was able to retain much of what we went over because the lessons effectively covered material that I can relate to my personal life. Taro is definitely my favorite teacher since he goes the extra mile and genuinely cares about his students as well as their goals. If you're thinking of beginning lessons and aren't sure where to start, Taro is the perfect teacher for guiding you to identify and reach your learning goals, whether you're a beginner or have moderate experience with Japanese!"

15 Fun-to-Say Japanese Onomatopoeias (With Audio)

What Are Japanese Onomatopoeias? An onomatopoeia is a word where meaning is derived from a sound, or when a word sounds like how it looks. In English, we have onomatopoeias like "cock-a-doodle-doo" for the sound a rooster makes, or "crunch" for the act of crushing things. Onomatopoeias are quite common in many, if not all languages. We tend to notice them most in comics as sound effects: zippers "zip" and light switches "click." They're fun to say and they certainly aren't hard to learn. …
