Flute:
A musical instrument in the woodwind group. Unlike woodwind instruments with reeds, a flute is an aerophone or reedless wind instrument that produces its sound from the flow of air across an opening. Starting with the basics we would first learn breathing and fingering techniques, notes, reading, rhythms, and songs. As the student progresses scales, theory and soloing will be taught.

Karen was not prepared for the lesson. She spent 15 minutes trying to send me photos from a beginner Tabla book available on Amazon. She did not own a set of Tabla drums. She ensured me she could teach anything, but could not pronounce the words used for proper Tabla technique, knew no history and could not even teach me to tune. She literally was reading out of the book figuring it out along the way. I lost a lot of trust from this and asked for a full refund for future lessons.

Karen is an incredibly skillful teacher. She is very passionate about music and it easy to be comfortable with her. She shares her training and knowledge very clearly. The vocal exercises seem very unique and holistic for body and voice health. She is very encouraging, caring, and soul-uplifting. I feel like I have a new connection with my voice and all that is connected to using it... as an instrument and the journey is only just starting. 45 minutes went by so fast. I am looking forward to my next lessons.

I always begin lessons with some form of warm up to focus on beauty in tone and then I follow that with exercises that build technique. I am happy to work with students with whatever method book they are currently using but I am also happy to suggest method books and literature that I feel could further guide their growth. My lessons are very student-centered in that I see what the student's goals are and work from there. I adjust my lessons based on how the student is performing that day. I am happy to teach students of any age and of any ability level!

I'm a musician, a music educator, and music researcher. I enjoy teaching and sharing my passion for music with students of all ages. I teach flutists of every age and level. In the beginning I like to ask each student what their goal is so that we can work towards that, whether it is to become first chair in band, make All-State or youth orchestra, play for Solo & Ensemble, perform with their church, or to just have fun and learn a new skill. In my lessons, I use positive reinforcement and encourage regular practice.

For beginners, I usually recommend doing a 30 minute lesson once per week and then increasing the lesson time and/or frequency as they become a stronger player. I use the Rubank Method for Flute as well as Pares Scales for beginning students. Once they have become more advanced I assign more challenging etude and scale books. When the student has a grasp of the instrument, I present solo repertoire and orchestral excerpts tailored for each level. I try to keep each student's goals, ability, age, and interests in mind when choosing music to keep the lessons engaging and fun!

"Julie is a superb teacher. She seeks to improve a student's musicianship in all relevant areas. She challenges students to improve their playing and not settle for merely passable results.

She seems to constantly be cultivating new methods and teaching techniques which means she is likely putting in as much work--or more work--than her students. If one particular teaching technique doesn't work for a student, Julie surely has an alternative path in mind that will probably lead to success.

Her knowledge and teaching course is deep and if a student desires an improvement in any specific area Julie certainly has a solution or multiple solutions tailored to specific needs of individual students.

Her schedule flexibility and openness to feedback are also top notch."
