Sitar:
A plucked stringed instrument used mainly in Hindustani music and Indian classical music. The instrument is believed to have been derived from the Vena, an ancient Indian instrument. Besides learning how the instrument is held and plucked the student will learn how to tune, play and read notes, rhythms, songs and the basics of music.

I thought I wanted to take viola lessons. Then I read her website and I realized that she might be able to help me get my voice back! I thought there was no hope ever. She has been extremely generous with her time, and I haven't seen her yet, but I'm not buying the viola I was planning on buying. I play cello, and piano still, but I am going to see if she can help me with my voice. She sounds incredible. I never dreamed that I could even have HOPE like this!

I've been teaching sitar for 5 years and my students have gone on to develop a love for Indian classical music and culture. Within the first few lessons, you'll be properly holding the sitar and playing notes and phrases. Then, we take particular ragas and begin layering in raga and tala theory and more advanced techniques. My greatest joy is taking a student who started with no musical experience and getting them to the point of successfully performing on stage with tabla accompaniment.

I have always loved the sound of the sitar but did not think it would be practical to play it. Mat proved me wrong put me at ease by opening the door to this wonderful instrument, and he has made it not so daunting. It is a pleasure to learn from him, and I am really enjoying the fun challenges of the sitar.

I studied Sitar with Allyn Miner who is in the lineage of Allauddin Khan, Ali Akbar Khan and Ravi Shankar. Raga theory is also essential to how I teach other genres of music such as the Blues. I can teach you about buying a Sitar and using it to play both Hindustani Classical and adaptiations of other styles of music.

About Jonathan

I studied music therapy and music theory at Temple University from '06-'10. Learned a lot. Then again, I learned even more teaching at a school for kids with learning disabilities and working as a traveling street performer. "Matt is a joy to have as an instructor. He’s very experienced and knowledgeable in not just the sitar itself, but how best to teach it. He figures where you are at, what you need, and helps you to set realistic goals for yourself. I would highly recommend him as an instructor! Additionally, I really appreciated his flexibility and willingness to help me continue my lessons when I lost my job which necessitated a move across the country and he was willing to try online courses. I think you definitely need an in-person foundation but the online classes have been really great and I’m so glad we could continue our lessons!"

"I've been taking lessons for over a year and have progressed significantly. Mathew is patient, supportive, and flexible. I had no prior experience with Indian Classical Music or stringed instruments. Mathew strikes a great balance - supporting traditional techniques, principles, and terminology while making sure I'm not overwhelmed. And, he also has a knack for figuring out just how much to challenge me to ensure that I'm constantly improving without getting in over my head."

"There's not enough stars for Omar. Omar taught me Sitar, Guitar, Ukulele, Vocals and Indian Classical music. He is super patient, supportive, professional and tailors lessons to your goals. Plus he makes his own videos to support his students! I have never met a more passionate music teacher and his knowledge of music comes from all over the world.
I know someone who started taking lessons from Omar who couldn't afford more then the broken guitar he had. Omar traded him a guitar he BUILT for the broken guitar [and later on fixed it up].
If that's not enough because of Omar I've been on tour. No one else has been able to help me in understanding and appreciating music as much as Omar has."
