Viola:
A stringed instrument that is bowed or played with varying techniques. It is slightly larger than a violin and has a lower and deeper sound. Since the 18th century it has been the middle or alto voice of the violin family, between the violin (which is tuned a perfect fifth above) and the cello (which is tuned an octave below. The strings from low to high are generally tuned to C3, G3, D4, and A4. My lessons always start out with the basics! We start out by learning notes by plucking the strings and then the bow is soon incorporated. The goal is to eventually learn all the notes on the fretboard and also learning how to read and play chords. As the student progresses advanced techniques are introduced, music theory and learning how to solo.

Karen is an incredibly skillful teacher. She is very passionate about music and it easy to be comfortable with her. She shares her training and knowledge very clearly. The vocal exercises seem very unique and holistic for body and voice health. She is very encouraging, caring, and soul-uplifting. I feel like I have a new connection with my voice and all that is connected to using it... as an instrument and the journey is only just starting. 45 minutes went by so fast. I am looking forward to my next lessons.

I thought I wanted to take viola lessons. Then I read her website and I realized that she might be able to help me get my voice back! I thought there was no hope ever. She has been extremely generous with her time, and I haven't seen her yet, but I'm not buying the viola I was planning on buying. I play cello, and piano still, but I am going to see if she can help me with my voice. She sounds incredible. I never dreamed that I could even have HOPE like this!

About Hannah

After studying piano for almost 10 years I decided I wanted to learn a new instrument and began taking violin lessons when I was 16 years old. In spite of people telling me that I was “too old” to learn to play the violin, I continued practicing and one year later I joined my first orchestra. In 20

Lisa is a fantastic instructor. I'm an introverted adult, and I was nervous about taking lessons online, but she made me feel comfortable and natural. I feel like I have learned so much in just three lessons. Lisa peppers music theory throughout the lesson, without taking from the time spent playing. It is like everything is in balance and fits in to a bigger picture. She also makes me laugh from time to time, which is the icing on the cake. I highly recommend her as a teacher.

My young daughter has been taking lessons from Lisa for awhile now. She is absolutely wonderful with her. She teaches her not only how to play the violin, but also the history of music along with it. She is very knowledgeable. My daughter has progressed a tremendous amount since she started violin lessons with her. I would highly reccomend Lisa as an instructor for students of all ages!

I've been taking violin lessons with Susanna for over 3 months. I'm 36, and had never picked up a violin before, although I did know how to read music. She has been great to work with. She adapted the classes to my strengths and weaknesses, and is very easy going. Exactly what I was looking for!

I had decided to pick up the violin during the pandemic, so remote was the only option. I was a little worried that remote lessons might make it hard for my teacher to coach me on form, particularly. That hasn't been an issue at all. Susanna regularly gives me notes on bowing, fingering, and tune. It works quite well, and she's been flexible about which video conferencing system we use.

Can't recommend Susanna enough! She's amazing.

"Kendra is an amazing viola teacher. Since this was my first online lesson ever, I was skeptical at first. However, Kendra's kindness and positive attitude assured me that I had made the right decision. She covers many aspects of both the technical parts of handling the viola, as well as perfecting intonation and handling a wide variety of styles of music. She also is attentive to specific needs, and accomodates for different paths depending on individual goals. Thanks for all you do for me Kendra!"

"My daughter has been taking lessons from Will for about a year. We are lucky enough to live near Athens, so lessons take place at our home. I have been so pleased with Will. He is a great teacher - enthusiastic, kind, patient, and knowledgeable. Even though he has many students, he always remembers exactly what they were working on. He takes interest in my daughter's life and will ask her how marching band is going, or other things about school. I especially like that Will is someone that she can look up to as an example of hard work and perseverance. He's not only a great teacher, but he's just a good person, and I am so glad we found him!"

"I have taken three lessons with Megan so far. Megan is highly professional but friendly. She has exceptionally good ears, even when the lessons are conducted online. I just picked up viola a couple of years ago. As an adult viola learner, I appreciate Megan's style. She knows that we (adult learners) will improve with practice. She combines the basics (scales), techniques, and tone in each lesson. It seems that she sees my strengths and areas of improvements and adjusts her teaching style to match my skills. I highly recommend Megan to viola adult and child learners."

"Rebecca teaches with the Suzuki method. She accommodates my previous experience with music, filling in some gaps and skipping over what I know. She also accommodates other needs: I take a lot of notes, slowly, and she waits while I finish.

In person lessons are the dream, but Rebecca works around the limitations of the internet beautifully. Her instructions are sometimes a direct how-to, other times about exploring by myself as I practice.

Finally, it's clear she loves the instrument. Now viola lessons and practice are the highlight of my day!"

"She's the best! My daughter started on violin with the school and then moved on to viola. Finding a viola teacher is no easy task! In fact, finding anything for the viola - music, strings, etc ... is difficult! But Kimberly does a great job and got her off to a wonderful start. We are so incredibly happy to have Kimberly teaching our daughter. Do not rely on your child's school to teach viola - go directly to Kimberly."
