I started studying classical piano at the age of 6 and continued through high school before going on to study with Robert Shannon at Oberlin Conservatory, where I majored in music history and theory (as well as English and creative writing - I've always had a lot of interests!). I also sang in choirs from a early age, including my high school's Madrigal Singers, the MMEA Northeast District Chorus, and the Oberlin College Choir, a select group which performs regularly with the Cleveland Orchestra. After graduation, I tried out a variety of musical activities, including singing with a semi-professional a Capella group, None of the Above, and appearing in local community theatre productions. But I finally realized that I'm most comfortable behind a piano, whether playing and conducting for musical theatre, coaching singers, writing music for
youth productions, or teaching the next generation of music lovers how to navigate the keys. And while I perform mostly Broadway-style music now, my classical training continues to serve me well; using good technique not only allows me to play more accurately and expressively, it also protects me from injuries that might otherwise arise from long rehearsals and a busy performance schedule.

I'm excited about where my musical journey has taken me, and I look forward to helping you start or continue yours.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm serious about making sure my students learn basic skills, like reading notes and rhythms and learning to interpret music artistically, that will serve them not only as developing pianists but in any future musical endeavors. To that end, I choose method books (such as the Faber Piano Adventures series) and supporting materials that build a strong foundation of musical knowledge, and I help each student construct a practice schedule that's appropriate to his or her level.

However, although I do maintain a certain amount of structure, I am very patient and relaxed in my approach to each individual student. I recognize that not everyone learns at the same speed or in the same way, so as long as I can tell you're putting in the effort, I will also try my hardest to find what works for you! And I know it's easiest to stay motivated when working on music you love, so I like to supplement the regular lesson materials with music of the student's choice, whether that means offering a selection of level-appropriate classical pieces, helping locate an arrangement of a favorite song, or coming up with our own arrangement if a good one doesn't already exist. And while my own background is strongest in classical and Broadway styles, I'm happy to have students work on music from any genre. One of the best parts of teaching is when I get to learn something new as well.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Malden studio: Dedicated studio with 88-key weighted keyboard, recording equipment, and large collection of sheet music. Parents can sit in on lessons or wait downstairs. Parking in driveway or on street. We have cats.

Bedford studio: Front room setup for lessons with upright piano and stereo. Laptop available to record lessons. Parents can sit in on lessons. Parking available in driveway and street.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would expect the student to provide a piano or suitable keyboard (88 keys, weighted keys or at least somewhat touch-sensitive, with a clear piano sound). For vocal students, it would be helpful for them to have a separate music stand as well.

*** Specialties ***
In terms of vocal music, I am definitely most comfortable with Broadway-style repertoire, but I have experience with some of the classical repertoire as well. As a pianist I have a solid classical background but am also very familiar with Broadway playing styles; I think I've done a little of everything at this point, so I could adapt to any interests my students might have. I am trained in the Taubman piano technique, which focuses on healthy, effective motions, so I try to incorporate some elements of that in my teaching, to the extent
that I think a particular student will benefit from it.

As for methods: for beginning and intermediate piano students I tend to use the Faber Piano Adventures series, supplemented by additional exercise books (Dozen a Day, for example), simple classical pieces (Bastien publishes a book that I like), or other materials depending on the student's interest and level of achievement (pop, Broadway, etc.). For advanced students I would use different exercise books (Hanon, Czerny, etc.) and focus more on repertoire than method, continuing to teach theory and technique as it comes up.

For vocal students I have mostly stuck to whatever materials/repertoire the student was most interested in, plus vocal exercises to support any problems or challenges they might be working on (e.g., range, vowel formation, learning a healthy mix/belt technique).

Kelly is my daughter's fourth piano teacher in 8 years. I am impressed by Kelly's efforts to select pieces that align with the individual student's unique musical preferences and instincts. What's more, I appreciate how they stay with a piece and work on it until it is really mastered, focusing on different elements that need attention from week to week. I am extremely pleased with my daughter's growth as a pianist after just one year with Kelly, and delighted by her new confidence in her abilities at the keyboard. My student will now--unprompted--sit down at the piano to practice just for fun because it is finally fun now that she likes what she's playing and is convinced of her own ability.

Lessons with me will be fun and constructive. I gear my lesson plan to your individual needs with a strong focus on fundamental technique, proper grip and stroke as well as helping you find your balance and relaxation behind the kit through posture and ergonomic set- up.

We will be able to explore the techniques of your favorite drummers. Through my wide range of experience I will be able to give you the skills nec
essary to function within your favorite genre of music. At the same time, I may introduce you to some forms of music less familiar to you. You can then use that experience to bring a fresh approach to your chosen style.

The name of the game is time-keeping and time feel. You will be expected to practice with a metronome, but also with recorded tracks. We will record your playing and listen back. This is one of the best ways to improve your playing.

Double bass and/or double pedal also taught as well as left foot clave, Latin percussion, piano, and music theory.

Two drum sets, full PA, fender rhodes piano, congas, timbales and hand percussion, frame drums, bongos, DVD player, audio recording capabilities. Parents can sit in on lesson.

All students are required to learn the basics in piano, such as,
the lines, spaces in both clefs, time signatures, note values.
Once the students have mastered the above, they can go on to learn
major and minor scales along with music pieces.
Students play songs that are in the John Thompson book and also
plays some supplementary songs.

I generally use the Schirmer and Thompson books for piano lessons. I don't consider myself strict but I do expect students to practice at least an hour a day.
3-6 months I do expect them to be able to start playing the piano and to know their notes and their locations.

I am one of those individuals for whom teaching is just something that I have to do. I started giving music lessons sometime in the 80's and have loved working with all levels of skill and experience. My students say that I am patient, adaptive and encouraging, committed to making music fun.

I have a Masters of Music from New England Conservatory in Jazz Piano and am comfortable and fluent in a number of musical styles, including pop, rock, gospel, traditional hymnody, jazz, and R&B. Although I love and study classical music, it is not something I teach at this point.

In addition to private lessons and performing, I do music transcription, workshops, and all forms of vocal and instrumental arranging. Bil Mooney-McCoy is a life-long Boston resident who has been playing music all his life. Having served as a church musician for more
than 30 years, I am currently the Director of Worship for the chapel at Gordon College, a small Christian school north of Boston. I'm often involved in city-wide music events in Boston’s faith-based community and in demand as a featured musician for church services, parties, concerts and other events.

I hold a Masters of Music from New England Conservatory in Jazz Piano and am comfortable and fluent in a number of musical styles. There are at least two ways that might set me apart from other teachers.

Firstly, I have honed and developed "people skills". I am an ordained minister and have held positions where I was formally and informally in a mentoring/pastoring role. I bring that sensitivity to my music lessons, understanding that personal and emotional issues can be triggered by the engagement with the music and skills being worked on.

Secondly, I've had a remarkable broad base of experience. My coursework has exposed me to a wide breadth of ideas and tools; my work life has been long and varied; I have had extensive experience in many different cultural contexts, both musically and otherwise; and I work well with many age groups and skill levels.

Regarding my teaching approach:
For beginners, I have a fairly consistent set of topics and skill sets to cover. Generally, in a few months, piano students (particularly those in middle school through adulthood) should know how to play major, minor and seventh chords, how to read simple chord charts and some very basic accompanying skills. Guitar students should know a dozen open chords and have been introduced to barre chords, and to have learned several styles of finger picking as well as strumming. Bass students should know how to find notes on the board and will have begun to learn how to fill out a song with an expressive but non-obtrusive bass line.

For intermediate students, the pace, direction and focus on lessons depends upon the goals and passions of the student along with the amount of time he or she has to practice. My goals for students at this level and beyond is to learn how to learn. I will use outstanding recorded examples of particular skills or stylistic idioms to help my students understand and master each new concept. I often will check in with my student to make sure that we are on track with what they are hoping for.

For advanced students, we will generally target very specific objectives. I also try to add elements of theory, history, culture, and even life lessons to apply to the topics we address. Because of my background in pastoral ministry, I can serve as a mentor addressing the emotional and relational issues of playing music as well as its technical aspects.

After Anastasia’s Carnegie Hall Debut in 2006, the New York Concert Review wrote: "For a critic, hearing a new pianist with a truly warm, luscious tone is like breathing in the scent of jasmine blooming - a pleasure to be recalled again and again - and so I'm happy to report that from the first note she touched at her Weill Hall recital, Anastasia S. was a genuine pleasure to listen to. Every piece, every measure, every note - no matter how complex the texture, no matter how many strands of melody and accompaniment - was wrapped in a halo of golden tone..."

Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Anastasia S. gave her first solo recital at the age of eleven. Ms. S. is a graduate of the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg, Germany, and holds a Master’s and a Doctorate degrees from The Hartt School at the University of Hartford.

In 2003 Anastasia received
First Prize in the 14th International Piano Competition for Young Pianists in Rome, Italy, and was awarded a Special Prize. In year 2006 Ms. S. won the Puigcerda International Piano Competition in Spain. In the same year she recorded the complete works for piano and orchestra by Balakirev with the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra for NAXOS records. Her career continues with numerous appearances as a soloist both in concertos with orchestra, in solo recitals, and in chamber music concerts in Ukraine, Germany, Macedonia, Italy, Switzerland, France, Russia, USA, and Japan. Anastasia’s recent engagements included a performance at the Bolshoi Hall of Moscow Conservatory as well as solo appearances with orchestras in the United States and Germany featuring concerti by Prokofieff, Mozart, Grieg, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, and Stravinsky. In 2014 her new CD "Music of Russian-Jewish composers for oboe and piano" was released. Currently, Anastasia is working on her two new solo CD's for Centaur Records.

In 2013, Anastasia was granted the Extraordinary Abilities in the Arts permanent US residence, as one of a small percentage of those who have risen to the top in their field of endeavor. As an adult beginner, I chose Anastasia for more personalized instruction, especially in technique, after learning the basics through community center group lessons. I have not continued only because another equally well-qualified instructor who lives close by, within walking distance, has become available. I am very pleased with the lessons and pointers that I have received. Anastasia is professional, encouraging, and friendly. An especially helpful part of her instruction is the set of comments and suggestions that she writes down to guide practice between lessons. If the neighbor instructor does not work out, I’ll be back.

I enjoy working with most of my students, especially those who practice hard. I find all students unique and they response differently to my requests or questions. I feel that very often I need to react spontaneously to their responses. For the beginners I mainly focus on reading musical notes and learning correct rhythmic values. With beginners who haven’t played the piano at all I teach finger exercises written finger numbers only. Then I use Piano Adventures theory, lesson, technique and artistry, performance, and popular music books. Although Alfred’s and Bastien’s methods are well known, I prefer Piano Adventures because they introduce the coordination of right and left hand in more progressive manner. At the beginning the following will be covered.
• Postures at the piano, finger numbers, high and low on the keyboard
• Music alphabet, Intervals
• Musical form, Dynamic marks
• Staff; line notes, space notes
• Time signature, accent mark, legato, staccato

I was born and raised in S. Korea. I studied piano performance at Cleveland Institute of Music and University of Iowa and hold DMA in piano performance and pedagogy from University of Iowa. Other than music I hold BS in Computer Science from State University of New York, Albany. I began to play the piano when I was six and won prizes from the local competitions sponsored by Daegu Board of Education and Dague Division of Korean Musicians Association. I performed in major cities in Korea, the US and Europe such as Seoul, Paris, Vienna, Cleveland and Philadelphia. I participated in The Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition during my last year at University of Iowa and was mentioned by the judges as a technically very good pianist. Previously I was a rehearsal pianist of operas, II pagliacci by Leoncavallo with Daegu Opera, Snatched by the Gods and Broken Strings by Param Vir with University of Iowa Theatre department, and contemporary operas based on the works by Francesca Cavalli with Temple University Opera. Other than operas I worked with Missoula Children’s Theatre for the performance of Aladdin. As a collaborative pianist I performed in numerous concerts and performed in master classes of Joseph Silverstein, Steven Isserlis, Julliard Quartet, Isaac Stern and Richard Stoltzman. I have been teaching piano at the university settings (University of Iowa and Catholic University of Daegu) or privately for 10+ years. If there's one thing that I've learnt from my experiences so far, it is that there's no definite maximum age to start learning piano at. The only requirements for one to be able to learn to play any instrument are patience and the will to learn and work hard.
I focus mainly on helping students develop a healthy, efficient technique and good interpretative skills.

I took my first piano lesson when I was 5. I played Euphonium (Baritone Tuba) in concert band and marching band in Elementary School, Middle School, and High School. I taught myself guitar and played keyboards and guitar (really loud guitar) in rock bands. I took some flute lessons. I got Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Piano. I also studied pipe organ. I studied electronic music. I accompanied opera singers and choirs. I taught piano, music theory, harmony, and electronic music privately and for universities. I've played in the orchestras for operas, musicals and theatrical productions. I've worked as a church organist. I played keyboards in oldies bands. I've sung in church
choirs. I sang in a vocal quartet that performed early Renaissance music in Switzerland and France. Since I was a teenager, I've written and arranged music. Throughout all of this, I've played and taught piano. Like I said, I love music.
