Students can expect a teacher that addresses every single aspect of learning orchestral upright bass: from honing bow technique, to left-hand formation and fingering choices, to reading musical notation, interpreting music and learning rhythm.

My goal is to help students develop a technical foundation on the bass for playing just about any kind of music that they are interested in, and to support students with practicing tips for areas in their playing where they want to improve. My specialty is symphony orchestra training, so I primarily use both the Essential Elements for Strings books and Suzuki Bass School series at the beginning, and then later as students make progress, I begin to introduce standard orchestral repertoire, sonatas, and concertos written for the bass. I have been teaching since August 2016 and so far I have helped students get into All-States, ensembles at the New England Conservatory Preparatory Division and Berklee College of Music, Districts/Regional ...

My 11 year old has attended an after school music program in our district for a few years playing the double bass. When Covid hit, she was no longer able to continue learning, but her music teacher recommended her to audition for a selective music program at Berklee College of Music. That's when I reached out to Darren via his website to see if he could work with my child for the 8 week period to prepare for the online audition submission.

Darren worked with her every week on a completely new song, introduced great techniques that enabled her to learn quickly and develop new skills. Those 8 weeks were very productive as my she learned the entire song, did the audition and was accepted into the Berklee music program. Darren is a very knowledgeable and dedicated music instructor and I am grateful to him for helping my daughter get into a selective music program. The online lessons from Darren are exceptional. You will not be disappointed with his instructions.

My son Ethan started working with Darren early this summer after Ethan's previous instructor for 5 years had decided to retire . I was surprised how quickly Ethan was bonded with Darren in this virtual setting. Due to Covid 19, all lessons have been conducted via Skype. Here is what Ethan was talking about Darren. "I have nothing but good words to say about my experience with Mr. Sacks. within a few weeks, I improved a lot. He was able to help me fix fundamental issues with my playing. He was also incredibly kind and patient with me. Mr. Sacks was also always able to explain things well and give me new ways to improve my playing. He doesn't let go of my mistakes but very encouraging when providing advice."

I specialize in playing the upright bass, and I have a great time teaching it. I enjoy giving the student perspective on the instrument, explaining the entire double bass and the intricate methods I've used to master it, from Simandl to Rabbath.

I studied upright bass at two Midwest Universities, Northern Kentucky University and University of Cincinnati CCM. I have been playing the bass professionally in ensembles for years. I have experience playing jazz, blues, bluegrass, rock, folk, musical theatre and classical music.

About David

My name is David and I'm a professional musician who just moved to North Austin. I came from Cincinnati, where I went to the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, taught dozens of students at all levels and played regular gigs every weekend. I have been teaching for over fifteen y

I searched for an excellent upright bass teacher for a good while. Then I found David Lloyd. David is patient, humorous, friendly, knowledgeable and very professional. He carefully taught me all the necessary groundwork to enable me to continue on my own for a while. In a few months I will, without question, continue my studies with David. I would, without hesitation, recommend David to anyone interested in seriously studying the Upright Bass.

I teach blues, bluegrass, rockabilly, country and some swing. Ive been playing for 10 years professionally in many venues around the east coast. My degree is what amounts to a double major double minor in Jazz piano/Recording engineering and jazz and classical guitar and having toured and played as a jazz pianist and being around and playing with so many upright players it was a natural progression for me. (on piano we learn to walk bass lines like bass players)

About Robb

Hi! I'm Robb: .piano, guitar and bass teacher. I’d like to tell you a little bit about myself. I started playing piano at 6, all classical music, and by 10 was playing in piano guilds and scoring very highly. However, around 11 or 12 i was searching for something other than 200 year old music a

"Spencer has been giving lessons to my son for the past couple of years for Upright Bass and Bass Guitar. We started with In-home and now, due to the current environment, have moved to virtual lessons. My son loves Spencer's friendly personality and is always looking forward to his lessons. I appreciate the flexibility of the schedule and the ability to work on multiple instruments when needed. Having a great teacher has always been important. We consider ourselves lucky to have met Spencer and continuously recommend him to our friends and family. My son has advanced tremendously in both instruments, and I credit Spencer for that."

"Can't say enough great things about Daniel. We are very experienced when it comes to music teachers, my daughter (9) has been learning Suzuki violin for 5 years with multiple teachers and last year she decided to also start taking Bass. Her lessons are both challenging yet inspiring at the same time- a combination that is hard to do. Daniel listens to the student and has a natural knack for knowing how to change up the lesson when needed while still focusing on building a solid foundation. He understands that playing an instrument also needs a growing appreciation for music/songs that the instrument can play and he continues to grow her repertoire of song styles far beyond the classical that she is used to. Most importantly she looks forward to her lessons and loves playing to songs she is learning."
