Knowing at the age of 5 that music was my life, by being brought up surrounded by praise music and gospel, my early exposure to music helped me to find every Instrument and style just my thing! I wanted to play everything and learn all aspects of music. I started with singing in the children's choir and then developed into piano and music theory. At the age of 12 I began to learn classical guitar, and at 15 took on various styles like Flamenco, Jazz and Rock. I graduated from High School having played in the school band achieving recognition In national Institutions Like IAJE (International Association for Jazz Education) and state band finals. I was also composing from a very early age, and at 18 released my first album (self-titled) which can still be heard and purchased today through various music outlets, since i have released over 15
albums with various ensembles and bands. In college I already knew from my previous experience that I wanted to teach and pass on the joy that music brought to my life. I studied Music Theory and Jazz and finished my degree in Music Education. I have been teaching all in all for about 14 yrs. And I have enjoyed every minute I have spent with my students learning as much from them, as them from me. I am looking forward to meeting new and eager students who really want to bring their inner music out to share with the rest of us music aficionados! and develop their skills to the peak of their abilities.

My teaching method ranges depending on the student. I believe in my experience that everyone learns differently, therefore everyone develops at their own pace. I try to find key strengths in each student and expose this to their advantage, using their abilities to further develop their skills, this method has shown the most promising results and students usually find themselves playing and performing just a couple of months after their first lessons. Part of my method involves a lot of performance and recital opportunities to help break any fears and inhibitions a student may bring with them. Music is about sharing, so an early exposure to this method helps to strengthen and stabilize a core acceptance of a students style and path, giving them and those close to them a very clear picture of their development and achievements.

If you needed a reason

There is no question that music touches us instantly and activates images, emotions and memories that linger with us throughout our lives. As a casual listener or an obsessive music elitist, there are times in our lives when we get blown away by a sound so unique our entire body vibrates and resonates with the touch of something out of this world. I can honestly say when this happens to me I feel as close to a spiritual connection than anything I have experienced otherwise. I believe it is these exact events that have triggered my need to be completely involved in the making, performing and consuming of music. The creative process, to me, is the single obvious reason we exist in this world. We create and share, learn and interpret, build on previous ideas and inspire others to perfect upon this process. It is no doubt a very humbling experience to realize you are part of it all. During this process you come to realize how important you are as an Individual, how there is no other vessel like you in this world, nor has there ever been or ever will. You are here now and your voice, your talent, your gift is an instrument to the great choir of the human spirit. No one but you can relate this, a reason to be, to create, to give.

I have experience working with people individually and in groups, as an undergrad Psychology intern, a cognitive skills trainer, a counseling student, an adjunct instructor and an academic coach. As an undergrad intern, I worked with elementary school children as a tutor and a mentor. As a counseling student, I have worked with various populations, from grade school students (grades 4-8; making healthier choices) to adults (stress, anxiety, career decisions, bereavement, etc.) to older adults in hospice care. I have facilitated psycho-educational groups with individuals suffering from a mental illness as well. Lastly, I worked with college students at a local u
niversity as an academic coach. In this role, I helped students process concerns and create goals regarding developing time management skills, coping strategies for anxiety, study skills, information processing and motivation. These experiences have helped me gain a continually growing understanding of facilitating the learning process with individuals and with groups.

I teach student development classes (critical thinking, motivation theory, study strategies, time management, stress management, etc.) at a local community college, I teach a learning and development class (views of learning, motivation, the memory process, memory strategies, critical issues in education, etc.) at a local university, and I work as an academic coach at another local university.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT COACHING: Using my insight gained as a counseling student, I am happy to offer my personal development coaching service. In this role, I help individuals develop their path of change, making sure motivation and focus is well-maintained. I provide a judgment-free and understanding atmosphere for one to reflect and process concerns as well as work towards making personal changes (e.g. self-actualization, career, anxiety management, lifestyle, life changes) from an existential perspective. I believe that such a space should be available for everyone, so I am especially happy to provide it.

My approach to personal development coaching is based on my therapeutic orientation called Gestalt Therapy (GT). The underlying idea of GT is that awareness is the key initiator of change. Awareness allows one to discern where such things as anxiety, unhappiness, ambivalence, etc. stem from. I believe that it is important for every human being to go through such a process so that peace and awareness within brings peace and awareness to the outer world. I am inspired by and influenced by the ideas of Carl Jung (Analytical Psychology- particularly the Psychological Types) and Carl Rogers (Client-Centered Therapy). I work with grade school students and adults. I am absolutely loyal to the idea of confidentiality; therefore, I ensure that information of anybody I work with is not at risk of being shared with a third party.

ACADEMIC COACHING/STUDY SKILLS: Using my passion for education and my insight gained in my few years (so far) immersed in the world of education, I help students (grade school and college) develop areas of their academic life needing improvement. As suggested above, I help students develop time management, learning strategies, coping strategies for anxiety, and motivation (i.e. help them to see the value of learning). Though it is a valuable tool, it is presently not a service that is offered at most schools in the area.

WRITING: As a lover of reading and writing, I understand the value of expressing thoughts, feelings and ideas. As a writer, my focus is on creative writing (mostly short stories presently) and essays. Given my undergraduate and postgraduate experiences, I have written many academic papers, in APA format and in MLA format. I edit and revise papers as well as help individuals develop their writing voice, develop their ideas, develop an approach to structuring writing, maintain consistency with writing and provide genuine feedback. Beyond that, my help with writing is limited to the goals of the the individual.

TWO IMPORTANT THINGS: I strive to maintain a positive collaboration with those I work with. I believe this is one of the most important parts of the process. Also, I promote the idea of Soul. To me, Soul is any sincere display of passion. With Soul, we perform in a most genuine and graceful way. I personally believe that whether one is playing the piano, writing a story, living life, singing, giving a speech or anything (necessarily peaceful), one should do it with Soul.

LASTLY, I am open to: Going beyond my travel radius, at an agreed-upon adjusted rate; working with multiple students, at an agreed-upon adjusted rate; meeting at a public place that is convenient, if it is preferred; and meeting at a student's location, depending on the preferred time and the distance.

I have to give Andrew 5 stars for the first lesson. He really cares about meeting goals specific to the person he is teaching. He started out with some basic exorcises that I can do at home and then we talked about how the lessons can be structured in the future for what I think I need to improve. He was very nice and I highly recommend him!

Having previous experience with many different math tutors, Ouray is BY FAR the best. As an ASU business student, I have been required to excel in math and this would have been absolutely impossible without Ouray. He is the friendliest, most relatable and enjoyable tutor there is. My name is Woodley and I am a 25 year old male from New York, NYC. At age 4 I told my mother that I was “born to talk” and I have been carried by the forever talkative philosophical spirit within, ever since. I am otherwise an avid reader of all things academic and philosophic. I love kids, I love asking questions, as well practicing martial arts, playing drums in a band, engaging in pick-up stype ultimate frisbee game, traveling, pizza, meditation, and, scuba diving.

The history of my academic-philosophical-work extends back to my senior year of high school, during which I was afforded the opportunity to participate in two philosophy seminars: one on normative ethics, and the other on existentialism. These two courses confirmed some of what I had suspected all my life but had not yet found the words to express — that we are not a
t all sure what we know or how we know it; that types of truth are potentially distinguishable; that meaning might be contingent; that experience does not directly dictate a finite reality; that the cause of something is often indeterminate; and that how best to live is not so clear. Once I could begin to express these ideas, the flood gate had been opened, and I knew that I had found my calling.

In college I focused on philosophy, in particular, ethics, epistemology, metaphysics, existentialism, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, and philosophy of religion. And in addition to studying and writing I co-ran Hampshire’s philosophy club. I also became the Teaching Assistant for my professors Introduction To Philosophy seminar. I wrote a thesis during my senior year on the Scottish philosopher David Hume’s empirical account of personal identity — and his related confession(s).

In the two years since my graduation from Hampshire, I have continued to write about and ponder consciousness. Over the course of the past year, I have been teaching a philosophy course at two middle schools in Brooklyn through a New York City-funded after school program called “Play Study Win”. Teaching this interesting age group, has caused me to realize that I want to become a philosophy professor one day. And now I tutor.

I have a passion for science, critical thinking, and teaching, and earned my B.A. in Biochemistry and Policy Studies from Grinnell College in 2016. I grew up homeschooling until high school age, and I believe being self-directed and self-taught much of the time, is what allowed me to truly love learning for the sake of learning. I often struggled in the confines of how science was taught in the public school system, and frequently found myself wishing I had better teachers who seemed more excited and invested in the topic than some of mine did. After attending college and getting to take sciences classes with some of the most amazing professors I ever had, I became extremely motivated to tutor and mentor fellow students as well as high school students, and share concepts and ideas that I had learned about and thought were extremely inters
ting. I saw clearly the difference that having a good teacher who was truly motiviated and invested in what they were teaching could make in the learning outcomes of students.

In addition to science, I also love music and traveling. I studied piano for about 12 years and taught a few beginning piano lessons several years ago. During college I studied abroad in South Africa for a semester, and while I was there I also worked with a small local tutoring company, helping grade school and middle school age children prepare for their science and math exams.

I enjoy working with students of all ages and levels, however I feel like high school and college level chemistry and biology is what I have the greatest base of knowledge and experience in. I especially love AP chemistry and college level general chemistry.

I am a student at Carnegie Mellon University and have been teaching or tutoring for close to a decade now. This includes paid and volunteer private tutoring, classroom teaching, teaching assistant, and even a summer camp for elementary and middle-school students to learn computer science and programming skills. I also competed in math club during high school and was particularly successful in my senior year competing in statistics (6th place in the individual Nationals statistics event).
