About Thomas
Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.

Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.

He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.

I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.

For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.

My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

After understanding a student's level and what their interests with piano are, I help the student pick a song or a piece to use for lessons that is according to those interests. After a student gains a good understanding of playing a song or a piece, I like to go over ways to change the dynamics (rhythm and note alterations) of the music to explore other kinds of expression through the piano. With this approach, my students may learn to bring logic (technique, scales, theory) and feeling (how the music is played) together. It is also a great introduction to improvisation.

I go over improvisation with students, if desired. This includes such concepts as playing comfortably with both hands, creating melodies, exploring the use of various scales and voice leading. Lastly, if desired, I can include singing in the lessons!

*In order to avoid an awkward schedule, I have limited my availability to a few evenings during the week. However, I am open to working another time that may work best for you.*

I have experience working with people individually and in groups, as an undergrad Psychology intern, a cognitive skills trainer, a counseling student, an adjunct instructor and an academic coach. As an undergrad intern, I worked with elementary school children as a tutor and a mentor. As a counseling student, I have worked with various populations, from grade school students (grades 4-8; making healthier choices) to adults (stress, anxiety, career decisions, bereavement, etc.) to older adults in hospice care. I have facilitated psycho-educational groups with individuals suffering from a mental illness as well. Lastly, I worked with college students at a local u
niversity as an academic coach. In this role, I helped students process concerns and create goals regarding developing time management skills, coping strategies for anxiety, study skills, information processing and motivation. These experiences have helped me gain a continually growing understanding of facilitating the learning process with individuals and with groups.

I teach student development classes (critical thinking, motivation theory, study strategies, time management, stress management, etc.) at a local community college, I teach an upper-level learning and development course (views of learning, motivation, the memory process, memory strategies, critical issues in education, etc.) at a local university, and I work as an academic coach at another local university.

As the information above may suggest, I hold education to such a high, passionate regard. It is what promotes a healthy, well-informed society. As an auto-didactic learner, I believe that everyone has the ability to learn anything one desires. It is a matter of how one approaches it. Therefore, my approach is one that is peculiar to each of the individuals I work with.

I present concepts with the idea that the combination of experience, discourse, and meaning-making is the key to learning. This aside from my teaching tools based on the views of learning. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT COACHING: Using my insight gained as a counseling student, I am happy to offer my personal development coaching service. In this role, I help individuals develop their path of change, making sure motivation and focus is well-maintained. I provide a judgment-free and understanding atmosphere for one to reflect and process concerns as well as work towards making personal changes (e.g. self-actualization, career, anxiety management, lifestyle, life changes) from an existential perspective. I believe that such a space should be available for everyone, so I am especially happy to provide it.

My approach to personal development coaching is based on my therapeutic orientation called Gestalt Therapy (GT). The underlying idea of GT is that awareness is the key initiator of change. Awareness allows one to discern where such things as anxiety, unhappiness, ambivalence, etc. stem from. I believe that it is important for every human being to go through such a process so that peace and awareness within brings peace and awareness to the outer world. I am inspired by and influenced by the ideas of Carl Jung (Analytical Psychology- particularly the Psychological Types) and Carl Rogers (Client-Centered Therapy). I work with grade school students and adults. I am absolutely loyal to the idea of confidentiality; therefore, I ensure that information of anybody I work with is not at risk of being shared with a third party.

ACADEMIC COACHING/STUDY SKILLS: Using my passion for education and my insight gained in my few years (so far) immersed in the world of education, I help students (grade school and college) develop areas of their academic life needing improvement. As suggested above, I help students develop time management, learning strategies, coping strategies for anxiety, and motivation (i.e. help them to see the value of learning). Though it is a valuable tool, it is presently not a service that is offered at most schools in the area.

WRITING: As a lover of reading and writing, I understand the value of expressing thoughts, feelings and ideas. As a writer, my focus is on creative writing (mostly short stories presently) and essays. Given my undergraduate and postgraduate experiences, I have written many academic papers, in APA format and in MLA format. I edit and revise papers as well as help individuals develop their writing voice, develop their ideas, develop an approach to structuring writing, maintain consistency with writing and provide genuine feedback. Beyond that, my help with writing is limited to the goals of the the individual.

TWO IMPORTANT THINGS: I strive to maintain a positive collaboration with those I work with. I believe this is one of the most important parts of the process. Also, I promote the idea of Soul. To me, Soul is any sincere display of passion. With Soul, we perform in a most genuine and graceful way. I personally believe that whether one is playing the piano, writing a story, living life, singing, giving a speech or anything (necessarily peaceful), one should do it with Soul.

LASTLY, I am open to: Going beyond my travel radius, at an agreed-upon adjusted rate; working with multiple students, at an agreed-upon adjusted rate; meeting at a public place that is convenient, if it is preferred; and meeting at a student's location, depending on the preferred time and the distance.

I have to give Andrew 5 stars for the first lesson. He really cares about meeting goals specific to the person he is teaching. He started out with some basic exorcises that I can do at home and then we talked about how the lessons can be structured in the future for what I think I need to improve. He was very nice and I highly recommend him!

I have a diverse background teaching students of all ages, from 3-year-olds to retirees alike, customizing what we learn to the individual student. Thomas is a great piano teacher who is incredibly professional, patient and helpful. He is fantastic at noticing deficiencies in your playing and is able to get you to fix them without ever being overbearing or too harsh. He's incredibly patient, knowledgeable and incredibly flexible in his schedule. There were times when I had to change my lesson times and he always made sure to find time for us to get our lesson in. Thomas offers the best lessons for the best price! Whether you're a casual player or looking to help improve your chops, Thomas should be your first choice.

I've just picked up flute after (literally) 50 years and been taking lessons with Thomas for several months. Lessons are enjoyable, and Thomas has taken great pains to gear them toward my goals for learning. Every lesson includes technique, musicality, and theory, with the theory taught through practical application rather than just as an abstraction. He also gives me guidance on how to practice, which was one of my key goals for taking lessons. I was concerned about whether I could find someone who understood how to teach adults - and am very pleased that I succeeded!

I am a jazz guitarist based out of beautiful Los Angeles, California. I received and Associate of Arts degree in Music in 2015, and have been pursuing a bachelors in Jazz Studies since then.

While in community college I really grew into my own as a musician and discovered that I love jazz. Not only the music, but the history of how it formed as well as the differences from classical music. When at school I stood out from the other guitarists because I was hungry to learn and that attitude will hopefully follow me for the rest of my life.

Thats what I'd hope to pass on the students; that knowledge, be it music, english, math, physiology, etc. is the key to everything. And that it doesn't have to be all stuffy and boring! I tailor my lessons to the student whether its guitar, piano, ukulele, etc. and my main objective is to learn and
have fun, so the learning is reinforced with good natured thoughts. This will set up the student to actually want to practice!

As a musician I've been in a couple of groups, and starting to get a jazz group together recently. I also try to utilize the computer to produce when possible so I can learn about that aspect of music. My passion is improvisation/composition, because I hope to one day leave songs behind that people can play forever and be influenced by them like so many have influenced me.

Mr. Chris is really pleasant and fun teacher. He was on time and made his first lesson very interesting. He reviewed my son patiently for whatever he has learned before and then introduced him to some new notes. He didn’t rush with the time and made sure my son is comfortable with him.

Chris has been an excellent teacher and has done a fantastic job of helping me not only improve my playing ability, but also improve my understanding of music theory. He is clearly very educated in all styles of music and he had great lesson plans that were specifically tailored for my level of playing. Lastly, he does a fantastic job of making sure I'm having fun while learning music.

My son has never played a musical instrument so I wasn't sure how this would go, but Christopher has really connected with him. He came home and actually practiced during the week! And Christopher always comes out after the lesson and gives me a little update which matters to me as a mom. I also appreciate how he doesn't just boot him out the door at the end of the lesson. AND my son is actually talking about music! Definitely learning more than just some chords. Good instructor who obviously loves and respects music. :)

My name is Ben Rosenthal, your future teacher! I hold a BA in Music from Westfield State University. I am also 90% complete with my Masters degree in Music Therapy from Saint Mary-of-the-Wood's College. I have been playing the trumpet for 20 years, guitar for 15, and piano for 10. My horn of choice is a Bach Stradivarius model 37. I assist with coaching the trumpet section for the Youth Wind Ensemble of Springfield at Community Music School of Springfield. My name is Chris. I am 35 years old. I have been playing piano since the age of 5. This is when I began taking piano lessons. At age 5 I was playing very simple tunes like mary had a little lamb , and twinkle twinkle little star. As my ability progressed the next few years, my piano teacher, Tina put the sheet music to Fur Elise by Beethoven in front of me. I was only 9 years old. I thought to myself, what an order, there is no way I can play this. I'm only 9. With her instruction, and patience, little did I know that song was the first building block to advancing my level of talent and ability, and was increasing my technique and sight reading skills. I practiced 4 hours a day from that moment forward, and in 2014 I placed 3rd nation wide in a music competition hosted by world renowned song writer Jim Brickman, and had the honor of pl
aying live on stage with him during one of his concerts at Symphony Hall in Springfield Massachusetts. Due to the technique that I was taught, my teachings mirror exactly how I was shown how to play. The ability to read music is the first step in developing your technique, and finger stretching ability, and through my instruction you too can elevate your ability. Practice makes perfect, and perfect starts with me.

I've had the opportunity to work with people as young as three and as old as 62. But as far as piano goes I've had mostly students in the Pre-K and early Elementary age range. My piano lessons are fun, engaging and comprehensive. I don't use one method, but have studied many methods, developed my own and customize lessons to best fit the student. My goal isn't just to impart information about music or technique, my goal is to help my students develop within themselves a living musicality that will be with them throughout their whole lives, no matter what they choose to do with their practice.
