*** Lesson Details ***
I am interested in teaching you what you need and want to learn so that you achieve your dreams. Please note that I only take serious students who will practice at least 30 minutes every day or 35 a day 6 days a week at home. I would like you to keep a log of how much you practice. This will enable you to make progress through the curriculum as you will be a beginner for the first 3.3 years, an intermediate for the next 3.3 years, and then an advanced student for 3.3 years. I will give you assignments to do over the week, and the next week we will go over them, learn something new and get new assignments. It takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert!

Dr. Maureen Spranza, is a great music teacher, my son is taking piano classes with her and I'm very grateful with her, because she always take the extra time to make sure my kid is learning, my kid loves Mrs. Maureen because she is a great teacher but also she is a great human being, she really cares about her students. And she not only plays the piano, she plays all the instruments, I hope to see my son become a great musician thanks to the dedication that Maureen puts in his classes, my kid loves his piano classes, every time after clases he came home very exited to practice what he learned and al of this if because Dr. Maureen encourage him to be better in Avery class

Dr. Spranza is one of the best piano teachers in the Bay Area. My two daughters take weekly lessons with her. She encourages them and empowers them to do their best. She teaches them both theory and practicals. They have participated in an informal recital and are now registered to take part in the MTAC Certificate of Merit program.

As parents, we see a big improvement in our daughters' piano playing skills. They even practice on their own, without us telling them to. All thanks to Dr. Spranza.

I grew up in music, and started playing the piano when I was 6 years old, and began composing and using Logic Pro two years after that. I have been playing saxophone for 8 years, and am currently working to gain my bachelors degree in music performance from California State University, Fullerton. During my saxophone instruction I also began learning clarinet as a supplementary instrument, and have been playing it for 3 years. What I love about music the most, is how deep it resonates with the human soul and how the music stems from the passion of the composer and the performer.

I feel that my job as a teacher is to instill a sense of passion and love for music in my students, in addition to teaching them the instrument and the rudiments of music. I also am a strong believer that the best way to grow as a musician is to perform, to play
with other musicians, and to listen to as much music as one can get their hands on. My teaching style emphasizes deliberate and consistent practice schedules and a very broad and visceral understanding of music as a whole.

We all know it’s not about being the best. It’s about having fun, and playing music well is definitely fun.

Practice makes perfect! Learning an instrument helps build self-confidence and discipline. If your child’s bored, distracted, or just needs a constructive hobby, music is a great place to get them interested in something that will help them feel better about themselves, and the effects will be felt across everything else they do, through better studying habits to a more patient, diligent work ethic.

It’s also relaxing! Stressed about work? Need an escape? Maybe you want to sound like [insert piano player here]. Everybody has the power to learn an instrument. Seriously, there’s no such thing as “talent.” Just start lessons and get practicing! It really is that simple, and I’ll guide you through every step of the way.

I have a diverse background teaching students of all ages, from 3-year-olds to retirees alike, customizing what we learn to the individual student. We’ll learn how to read music just as easily as you read words; improvise and compose music of our own; and feel good playing any style: classical, jazz, rock, and all. My experience as a working musician in films, musical theater, and pop music, as well as classical concert music, allows me to appreciate and teach styles that many other instructors overlook, and I know full well that learning an instrument is not about becoming a professional; it’s about being able to connect to others or oneself through music… and also to just have fun! There’s no need to learn music we don’t like! It’s not about stuffing Beethoven into your kids’ ears… we just want to make music, be that Beethoven or Billy Joel.

Music lasts a lifetime. I know that’s a terrible cliché, but it’s true, and few other skills can claim that. I don’t want to sugarcoat it: it takes time to learn an instrument. It takes practice, and sometimes it’s frustrating. But the results are well worth it, and like a snowball rolling down a hill, the longer you do it, the faster you get… or something like that. There’s a legitimate analogy in there somewhere.

“What’s that chord?” “Why does all my music sound the same?” “How do I fix this voicing?” “I just can’t get it out of my head!” …sound familiar? You’ve probably hit a rut. Or maybe you’re just starting out. Either way, you want your music to sound new, exciting, and to come out exactly how you hear it in your head. I whole-heartedly recommend Ryan as a private instructor. My middle school-aged son had enjoyed learning to play saxophone in his school band, but towards the end of his 1st year was getting bored by the slow pace. After beginning lessons w Ryan (through the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music) his interest, enthusiasm & skill improved dramatically & he began to excel as a musician. Ryan was soon guiding him through more complicated compositions, and the joy of playing was evident every time my son picked up his sax. With Ryan’s training, he learned to prepare for auditions, and as a result has won a seat (and solos!) in several State & city select bands, jazz ensembles and every group his school has to offer.

I have been teaching Woodwinds for quite a few years and I love it! My students have seen results from learning to love to practice, to competitive success in solo competitions. When you first come you will start to think about music in a simpler way and will gain the confidence and understanding you need to play how you would like. Normally, I use The Rubank Method to develop a lot of technique in younger students. For those playing jazz or folk, we do a lot of play alongs while focusing on specific concepts.

As a performer I have played clarinet in various settings, musicals, jazz band, classical, and can therefore teach a variety of styles. In lessons we will cover basic music fundamentals but also work toward your personal goals. I believe it is important to find what makes music special to each student. Lessons should be fun and engaging! My students have auditioned successfully into regional bands and select bands at school every year. But we also play top 40 tunes or whatever interests them most.

I am a musician with an equal passion for performing and teaching. I have taught ages 8-67 at all levels from beginner to advanced. I believe in the importance of teaching a strong core of music fundamentals but I also want to find what makes music special for each individual student. I believe lessons should be fun and engaging, I try to disguise the learning as much as possible.

Lessons are individually tailored to meet the unique needs and interests of each student but here are a few things you can most likely expect to work on: basic music fundamentals like note and rhythm reading, learning/review of musical symbols and terms, good tone production, learning all the notes on the instrument, scales, technique work, and as soon as we have enough notes... FUN songs.

Many of my students lead their school bands and audition successful
ly into regional and honor bands. For students in band at school, the school music and tests will be our first priority but if we get all caught up or extra challenges are needed I will be happy to supply them. I also have recitals for my students 2-3 times a year to give them the opportunity to perform for friends and family and share what they have been learning.

If you are going to purchase an instrument or supplies before the lesson do feel free to ask for help in selecting your materials, there is nothing worse than an instrument that doesn't function properly or needs constant and expensive repairs! If you have any books feel free to bring them to the first lesson, if not then I would be more than happy to make recommendations after the first or second lesson when I've had a chance to assess the student.

Extremely helpful! We broke down a piece of music I had for class that I was having some trouble with and by the end of the hour I was much more comfortable playing it! What I really liked is that she pointed out things I would have not noticed that made the rhythms easier to understand. About Dylan
Dylan James is currently a graduate student studying clarinet with Charles Neidich at Mannes College of Music, The New School. His orchestral playing has been heard nationally at prestigious venues including the Kennedy Center, New World Center, Kimmel Center, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and at festivals including Miami Music Festival, National Music Festival, National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute, and Northern Lights Music Festival. Twice a winner of the Rowan Soloists’ Competition, Dylan has performed as soloist with the Rowan University Wind Ensemble and the Rowan University Orchestra, in addition to the Northern Lights Festival Orchestra and the Philharmonic of Southern New Jersey, with whom he is currently a member. Dylan is a past winner of the Clifton Foundation’s Emerging Artist Award and was also honored with
an Undergraduate Scholar Award through the Presser Foundation. He is a member of the national music Honor Society Pi Kappa Lambda.

Originally from Mullica Hill, NJ, Dylan graduated summa cum laude from Rowan University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music, under the tutelage of Rié Suzuki. Upon graduation he was awarded the Ann B. Ward Medallion for highest distinction in Fine and Performing Arts. Dylan is a former member of Philadelphia Sinfonia as well as a past student of Settlement Music School, Philadelphia, PA, where he studied woodwind chamber music with Shirley Curtiss. He currently serves as a clarinet instructor for Rowan University’s Community Music School, Rowan Prep.

An accomplished player and teacher, I offer lessons to any and all experience levels and ages in clarinet. For beginners specifically, my curriculum includes basic music theory and sight-singing skills, though these topics can be applied across all skill levels.

I specialize in orchestral clarinet and music theory, and can tailor my lessons to each individual student's needs. I believe technique is the foundation upon which all of music takes place. An apt comparison is language; if you cannot speak, say, French, how could I expect you to write poetry in French? The same holds true for music and clarinet - without a solid foundation in technique, it is not possible to express everything you want to say about a piece, beginner or advanced. All of my students begin with exercises in embouchure and finger techniques, which continue throughout our studies.

I recently received my Masters degree in clarinet performance from the Hartt School of Music, under Ayako Oshima. My previous instructors include Sarah Porwoll-Lee and Greg Balfany, during my undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-L
