I learned to play chess from my dad when I was seven. Ever since, I have been playing in national and international chess tournaments. I was a four-time state high school chess champion. I'm an experienced tournament chess player (14 Years) and chess teacher (10 years). I have a masters degree in education from Harvard University. I have taught chess with the US Chess Center in Washington, DC. I have created several after school and in school chess programs in DC, Ohio and Boston. I was a program officer for a small nonprofit that taught chess in hospitals, libraries and schools throughout the Massachusetts area. My approach to teaching is that the lessons have to be customized for each student. I start beginner lessons with exercises that help familiarize them with the movement of each piece. They will also develop a sense of the powers and unique abilities possessed by that piece.

My focus on intermediate and advanced students is to help them develop their tactical ability. Chess is primarily an exercise in pattern recognition. I helped them develop that pattern.

We will then customize the lessons based on the student's interests and the topics that I feel will improve their game. We will play over the games of the great grandmasters and develop endgame technique. We will utilize openings that promote tactical situations.

Finally, we will have a lesson on chess etiquette.

About Richard

Chess is an exciting game that provides mental stimulation. It is a good way to increase math and reading ability. It is also a good way to avoid Alzheimer's. I try to make chess instruction as interesting as possible. I will show the student how to build on their knowledge.

I have been coaching chess for many years. What makes chess lessons unique with me is that I make the chess lessons exciting, fun to learn, I point out mistakes/weaknesses in a very kind way, I give good examples of moves/positions relate to real life, I teach people the psychology of playing chess, and I improve people's game through love and repetition. I teach several opening variations as well as middle-game and end-game tactics. But I focus on what people's weaknesses are and I make those weaknesses their greatest strength.

About Mathew

I have been coaching chess for years. I have been passionately studying the game of chess for 13 years. I am currently a 1987 USCF player (Class A player). I have been playing chess for 35 years. I play generally three times a week and win regularly. I have taught the game to over 100 people in my life. I mentor a number of young people who strongly believe that my chess instruction and the applicable thought logic lessons I inculcate have escalated their job options. I prefer students at the introductory levels to eliminate bad habits.

Knowledgeable, friendly, listens to you and caters the puzzles as per your requirement. Also, if requested to change the class date in case of emergency - she is very flexible with her schedules and alters the class date (instead of marking canceled - which Takelessons will deduct the amount). Glad I chose her for my son!

"My first chess lesson with Atousa was WONDERFUL! Besides being a chess Grandmaster with a thorough grasp on the entire game, she was also personable, engaging, encouraging, and willing to work with me (although I am not a very good player yet). I thoroughly enjoyed working with her, and am looking forward to future lessons and becoming a better player."

"I engaged Matt's service and knowledge to improve my game. I wanted to be able to compete and hold my own against players in the 1600 to 1900 range. Matt instilled in me that you have to have a mental toughness and you have to concentrate on every move if you want to play at a higher level. My game has stepped up. Recently I played a 2300 rated player...and though I lost a tough game, my opponent complimented me saying " you are good but you made a mid-game that cost you." I think with Matt's help I will avoid these mistakes in the future and my game will get even better."

His ability to work with kids and not only make the game fascinating, but convey complex ideas in easy to understand ways is unmatched! In addition, his many years of international tournament experience and ideas gathered from the best in the world is clearly evident. 10/10 recommend.
