the mid-70s. I became an assistant to composer and author of "The Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization" copyrighted by George Russell. I also leaned music theory traditionally. Students can learn all definable chord types, intervals and rhythms etc. I am a composer, guitarist and percussionist, who has the ability to share this information with my students !

I have had extensive jazz a rock studies from attending The Guitar Institute of Technology in Hollywood, to becoming George Russell's teaching assistant at The New England Conservatory of Music in Boston before he retired. Gregg was my musical instructor during the early 1980ties. What I learned in a few lessons with him was more that I could have expected. I was primarily focused on percussion, of which his vast knowledge was highly dynamic. I learned about poly-rhythms, Indian ti-hies, and complex time signatures. He had available much reference material that he provided me. And over the years his musical insights have not only supplemented my inquiries, but made me a better musician and person. I hope you have a chance to study with Gregg, as you will be introduced to a new and better way of musicianship!

Hello,
I am Vasiliy M, Boston University School of Music Alumnus (DMA in Composition). We dwell in Boston since Fall 2002; before that time , we lived in New York, where I studied Composition at Mannes College, The New School For Music. I received both BM, and MM degrees from Mannes in 1999, and 2001, respectively. Before an arrival to US, in 1994, I studied Jazz Performance, Electric Bass Major, and Classical Composition, at Moldova State Conservatory, from 1988 to 1993, respectively.
I was raised in the family, where music is an essential part of its daily life; my father, Grigoriy, before his retirement, was a military band trombone player, and, quite naturally, I was exposed to music, and encouraged by my parents to learn playing an instrument of my choice, from my early childhood.
My mother, Anisia Kondrat'ievna,
possesses both beautiful vocal abilities and perfect pitch , although she has never had a chance to develop her natural gifts any further. But I have heard my mother singing, and these moments remain one of the most touching and impressive musical experiences, that I have ever received, and remember to this very day.
Only after a considerable life experiences, abound of trials and mistakes, at the age of twenty five, I have come to a clear realization, that music remains my greatest passion, and that I would have to become a professional musician. With help and support of friends and colleagues, I have entered Community College in Soroki city, Moldova Republic, where I have studied Choral Conducting for Amateurs. I have graduated from school in May of 1988, having written a few instrumental and vocal compositions of my own, and, quite unexpectedly for myself, was invited, that summer, to visit Moldova State Conservatory, with the prospect of audition for the Composition Major. After the meeting with the Chair of the Department, I was offered an opportunity to be accepted to the Master Degree Program in Composition, provided I will have completed two years of preliminary studies of Music Theory, Music Harmony/Voice Leading, and many other related disciplines.
Why do I bring all of these facts to this Essay? I know for the fact now, that I was not ready for what was awaiting ahead of me, back then. There was no way, that I could cope with the demands of Composition Program curriculum. But I have had love for music, that my parents have implemented in me throughout my childhood; I have had natural abilities, that Heavens supplied me with: and I have had a chance to make my dream a reality, providing I do everything that I will have to, during the following years of struggles and study.
The decision was made, and my studies have begun. I have come through every mistake, defeat, and mind-barriers imaginable, and if it would not be a continuous stream of professional help and support, that I have received from my numerous teachers, mentors, and professors, along the years of study, my goals could never be attained to any modest, but real degree.
Whenever I have a chance to teach, tutor, or assist other musicians with their study, my past experience always reminds me, that any person may experience some difficulties of various nature with the learning material, from time to time, and that those difficulties should be addressed by student's teacher with the highly individual approach, however time-and effort-consuming it may be. Patience and respect, in regard to the students, have become as important aspects of teaching to me, as those of discipline and professionalism.
My studies have come to an end; I see now, that the world of music is an endless entity, for it has no boundaries, and we all have to maintain our further progress, in order to move to our chosen destinations, and to help others with their own advancements.

I graduated from SUNY Purchase with a BA in Studio Composition in 2007, and from Hebrew College with a Masters' Degree in Jewish Education in June, 2016. I have been working in after-school, Hebrew school, camp, and other supplementary educational settings for the past ten years. Most of my students are learning piano, and I also have a few Hebrew students. My Hebrew students are either studying for their bnei mitzvah, maintaining their conversational Hebrew, or learning for the purpose of competence of services or Torah study. My piano students have ranged from age 4 to young children learning Classical pieces to teens learning to play the songs they like to adults working on their songwriting and improvisation. My strengths are improvisation, music theory and ear training, accompaniment of popular songs - rock, theater, pop, folk, etc.

My first lesson was everything I hoped for from start to finish. I haven't played piano for many years & wanted to begin by using a keyboard as a learning tool--to recapture dexterity and reading ability. I emerged with a better grasp of basics & even a little music theory--exactly as I had requested. Itai is a wonderfully patient teacher & I am looking forward to next week.

Ricky is an amazingly creative and inspiring teacher.

Ricky has been teaching my daughter for last 5 years. My daughter is now 15 years old. She already played piano for a couple of years before Ricky started working with her and at that time was getting disinterested. We were looking for someone who would bring that interest and spark back into her playing piano. I was looking for a special teacher who can teach basics of improvisation and accompaniment to a young child. After talking with several potential teachers, we decided to work with Ricky.

Ricky has proven to be an amazing teacher for my daughter. He is patient, creative and able to adjust to the child’s needs. I was amazed when couple of months after my daughter started working with him; she was already improvising and playing really cool pieces of music. That kind of teaching has inspired my daughter to continue playing piano for the last 5 years. She has accompanied two of her friends singing at her school talent shows and graduation ceremony with encouragement and inspiration Ricky has provided her all along.

Ricky frequently encourages my daughter to pick her own songs she would like to work on. Ricky has a strong knowledge of music theory and has incorporated that in his lessons. I love that my daughter is learning music theory, improvisation, accompaniment and reading music all with the same teacher. It is not easy to find a teacher who is so creative to include all of these in his teaching method. I would highly recommend Ricky as a piano teacher for any age.

I generally use the Schirmer and Thompson books for piano lessons. I don't consider myself strict but I do expect students to practice at least an hour a day.
3-6 months I do expect them to be able to start playing the piano and to know their notes and their locations.

After Anastasia’s Carnegie Hall Debut in 2006, the New York Concert Review wrote: "For a critic, hearing a new pianist with a truly warm, luscious tone is like breathing in the scent of jasmine blooming - a pleasure to be recalled again and again - and so I'm happy to report that from the first note she touched at her Weill Hall recital, Anastasia S. was a genuine pleasure to listen to. Every piece, every measure, every note - no matter how complex the texture, no matter how many strands of melody and accompaniment - was wrapped in a halo of golden tone..."

Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Anastasia S. gave her first solo recital at the age of eleven. Ms. S. is a graduate of the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg, Germany, and holds a Master’s and a Doctorate degrees from The Hartt School at the University of Hartford.

In 2003 Anastasia received
First Prize in the 14th International Piano Competition for Young Pianists in Rome, Italy, and was awarded a Special Prize. In year 2006 Ms. S. won the Puigcerda International Piano Competition in Spain. Anastasia’s recent engagements included a performance at the Bolshoi Hall of Moscow Conservatory as well as solo appearances with orchestras in the United States and Germany featuring concerti by Prokofieff, Mozart, Grieg, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, and Stravinsky. In 2014 her new CD "Music of Russian-Jewish composers for oboe and piano" was released. Currently, Anastasia is working on her two new solo CD's for Centaur Records.

As an adult beginner, I chose Anastasia for more personalized instruction, especially in technique, after learning the basics through community center group lessons. I have not continued only because another equally well-qualified instructor who lives close by, within walking distance, has become available. I am very pleased with the lessons and pointers that I have received. Anastasia is professional, encouraging, and friendly. An especially helpful part of her instruction is the set of comments and suggestions that she writes down to guide practice between lessons. If the neighbor instructor does not work out, I’ll be back.

The beginning student of Music Theory will be expected to read music, or be swiftly taught to do so. We will explore what all of the notations on a piece of music mean, and the basics of harmony and melody.

The intermediate student of Music Theory will begin working with the rules of functional harmony and explore these via composition and exercises. Ear training will also be incorporated into this lessons. We will analyze and listen to the great classical pieces to understand these principles of functional harmony.

The advanced student of Music Theory will learn when to break from the rules and how to do so coherently. We will touch on Music History to see how past composers have done so, and continue work with composition and analysis.

I have taught private instruction and group instruction in such varied subjects as Music Theory/Ear Training, Woodwinds, and Crochet. I completed a B.A. of Music at University of Massachusetts - Boston, in August, 2014. As a working musician, I currently perform oboe with the Brockton Symphony Orchestra (Dir. James Orent) and the University of Massachusetts - Boston Chamber Orchestra (Dir. Dr. Jon C. Mitchell). My daughter just took her first lesson with Tegan. Tegan was very professional, friendly, patient and put my daughter at ease right from the start. I really enjoyed working through beginner/intermediate classical guitar with Gene. He was always prepared and very knowledgeable about the different pieces we were working on. He helped my technique tremendously, and structured my progress in a way I wouldn't have been able to do myself. If you are serious about wanting to learn guitar I strongly recommend getting a teacher, and if you live in the Boston area I highly recommend Gene.

I'm an active flutist and Japanese enthusiast living in Boston! I recently graduated from the University of Washington with a flute performance degree and Japanese minor and am now pursuing graduate studies at the New England Conservatory. I believe that learning music should be fun and inspiring, but that 95% of artistry is simply hard work! I, therefore, create a positive and encouraging environment for all of my students, while still setting challenging goals. Additionally, I tailor my teaching to fit each student’s needs so that learning potential can be maximized. Stylistic choices in musical expression/phrasing are encouraged through the incorporation of music theory, music history, and ear training skills into lessons. I also believe that body awareness is important, and will include stretches and practice methods into each lesson,
so students can practice efficiently and prevent injuries!

Terrific first lesson. Almost immediate improvement in tone thanks to a few simple, easy to remember cues. Stretching exercises and body stance were emphasized as a foundation to build for quality sound as well as care to prevent injury.
I almost can't wait for my next lesson.

Mona knows what she's doing and is very kind. Not only are the links that she sends you during the lesson helpful but she explains when you'd use the words and helps you understand the appropriate situations for when you use them. She is very friendly and a wonderful teacher that will listen to your questions and answer them and her answers are never halfhearted. I completely would recommend her as a Japanese tutor/Instructor if you wish to learn how to speak and write Japanese while still having that relaxing environment.

Benjamin is great. He has the task of teaching a 46 year old longtime electric bass player and a 12 year old electric bass player (father/daughter). He is teaching us both the fundamentals of the upright bass, which is such a different instrument. We look forward to continued lessons with Benjamin.

Hello! My name is Elias, and I'm a classical cellist, pianist, and an aspiring symphony orchestra and opera conductor. I recently graduated from Harvard University where I studied music. Before transferring to Harvard, I attended the New England Conservatory of Music where I was a cello performance major and Tufts University where I studied history. As a cellist I have attended various music festivals including the Aspen Music Festival and School and the Bowdoin International Music Festival, and I have performed in concerts and master classes across the country. As a pianist, I have served as a rehearsal pianist and vocal coach for numerous operatic productions, and I frequently accompany both singers and instrumentalists. I am looking for piano and cello students of any age and level!
