Students studying voice with me can expect to gain a thorough understanding of their voice on both an anatomical and a functional level. My method is built upon the vocal training I received as an actor, and on the decade plus of experience I've had since as a singer, musician, music director and actor. It's important for every singer to understand what is really happening with their body when they sing, but that knowledge is only useful if a student is taught how to apply that knowledge in a simple, repeatable way. Each voice is different, just like each body is different, but through a combination of physical and mental vocal exercises, each of my students will learn what proper vocal support means for them. The repertoire of material we then apply this knowledge to is up to the student. I'm happy to teach through whatever genre you're looking to improve in. I also have the ability to make instrumental tracks for my students to practice with, and to make both audio and video ...

About Ian
Hello! My name is Ian, and whether you're young, old, a novice or a veteran, I can't wait to work together to help you achieve your creative goals. I've been singing for as long as I can remember, and began playing the guitar when I was 11 years old. I studied music and theatre at Salem State University, where I earned a B.A. in 2004, graduating Summa Cum Laude. For the last 15 years I've been working as a freelance musician, music director, sound designer and actor in and around the greater Boston and Providence areas.

I love teaching, and I try to make my lessons fun, engaging and personally tailored to help each student meet their unique goals. I've worked with individuals of all ages, ability levels and walks of life, and I have extensive experience helping students with a wide variety of special needs, such as those with autism,
ADHD, anxiety disorders, physical disabilities, etc. I love teaching beginners, because it's such a pleasure to help someone navigate their way through what can be a very intimidating subject at first.

Great teacher and nice guy!

I started singing lessons as a complete beginner, although I am in my 30s. Ian was happy to teach me the basics and then we dove right in to something I was interested in learning to sing. He was easy to talk to and encouraging, but willing to point out what I could improve as well. I would recommend him to others.

Awesome teacher!!!

Took a couple singing lessons in the past with a different teacher and I didn't get very far. Ian has a great teaching style and I can already hear a difference in my singing just in the first few weeks of lessons. He is very encouraging, especially for a beginner like me. His constructive criticism is equally helpful. Highly recommended.

In addition to thoroughly addressing all of the issues that initially spurned my desire for vocal lessons, we also examined and exercised other critical areas that he brought to my attention, and laid a strong foundation for singing technique.

Singing is one of the most challenging and rewarding areas of musical performance. It's so personal and expressive that a lot of us feel uncomfortable approaching the voice at all. I've been singing and performing for over a decade. Using proper breathing technique and customized warm-ups I can help you become the best possible singer you can be!

About Joshua
Hi! I'm Josh, a passionate music educator in Boston, MA. I have taught over 1000 lessons over the past three years to piano, voice, and theory students of all ages. From preparing for rock-vocal style auditions at Berklee College of Music to helping re-discovering the fun of classical piano lessons, there is nothing I enjoy more than working with students on achieving their goals. As a gigging musician and a lifetime student myself, I know what it takes to improve, master, and most importantly ENJOY your time at your instrument. Looking forward to helping you reach all your music goals!

About me:
I eat/breathe/sleep music. From writing and conducting my first A Capella piece in high school to playing in bands that have toured around the world, music is my passion and my life! I value nothing more than finding that passion in others an
d working together to turn musical fantasies into realities.

From grade school to high school I took rigorous classical piano lessons. In 2006-07 I attended two summer programs at Berklee College of Music where I studied jazz/rock performance, and continued to study jazz piano at Washington University.

At Boston University, I studied classical music composition/theory, and was accepted to for a dual degree in Music Composition, Psychology, but decided to pursue music as a minor in order to allow more time for gigging. Since relocating to Boston, I have performed 250+ shows in various ensembles around the greater Boston area.

- Your favorite songs, any style
- Writing your own music
- How to learn music by ear
- How to read music notation and chord sheets.
- How to record/produce yourself

I've been there. That's not what I'm about. I'll teach you how to play whatever it is you want to learn, whether that's the complete works of Bach or the latest One Direction song. Let's do it.

About Daniel
I love to sing, and I love to teach. Private lessons are a great place for both. Whether you're already passionate about music, or just dipping your feet in the water, I can personalize lessons to meet your needs. For me, seeing a student grow as a musician is a reward in itself. But the biggest rewards should be yours: a stronger voice, a deeper understanding of music, a whole body involved in making music, an enjoyable effort, and a growing independence to handle musical and technical difficulties over time.

My background:
I am an experienced tenor vocalist, with over 11 years of private vocal study, a BA in music from Williams College, and further study in vocal pedagogy (how to teach voice) with a Longy professor. I sing currently with the Cantata Singers, Labyrinth Choir, Stämbandet, MetroWest Choral Artists, Terpsichore, .
I have taught voice on faculty at Camp Encore/Coda, music composition with Classroom Cantatas, and private voice lessons out of my home studio, currently in Somerville. I've also taught for 2 after school programs and 3 summer camps. I've studied piano, both classical and jazz, for a total of 15 years. I have studied a variety of musical topics at college, from theory and composition to singing and conducting, to music technology, recording and engineering. I've performed and directed in diverse styles ranging from early music to broadway musicals, jazz to classic rock, American to Swedish.

*** Lesson Details ***
Your voice is simultaneously the most natural, intuitive instrument we know, and among the most complex. Every person's voice is unique, so lessons are not about fitting your voice to some imagined ideal. Rather, lessons are an opportunity to learn how to utilize your strengths, minimize your weaknesses, while maintaining your own unique sound.

You'll learn how to:
- Use your breath effectively to support your voice.
- Reduce tension, to keep your voice healthy and help your voice last longer.
- Make more sound with less muscle work, through resonance.
- Involve your whole body, to produce a fuller sound.
- Make good artistic choices, which reflect your own unique perspective.
...and much more, according to your goals.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Studio room with full weighted keyboard and seating for parents.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can reliably reach students 5 miles away, traveling by bike or public transit depending on the student's location.

I prefer students to have a piano or keyboard, though we can work without one if necessary. My keyboard is too bulky to be carried around for each lesson. If a keyboard is not available, we can work without one, and I will bring a tuning fork for starting pitches.

*** Specialties ***
I sing in a variety of styles, including classical, broadway, and jazz, both sacred and secular, from around the world. I have extensive knowledge of music theory, and 15 years experience as a pianist. Although I do not currently teach piano, my ability to accompany vocalists during lessons is very helpful for students.

I work with students to improve their musicianship as vocalists. We will work together to increase: sight reading ability; basic understanding of the keyboard; ear training (scales, triads, sonority); understanding of rhythms; vocal range; singing with ease; vocal flexibility; proper use of breath; interpretive skills; character development; diction; and much more as singing is a true embodiment of music.

About Hannah
Hannah has been teaching private lessons since 2010 and is currently available to teach lessons at her studio in Arlington, or in your home, depending upon proximity. Hannah has helped students develop a solid musical foundation, reliable and healthy singing technique, broader interests into new genres of music, and most importantly, she helps them have lots of fun making music!

Hannah received her training at the Longy School of Music of Bard College where she received a master's degree in music as a vocal performance major. Her bachelor's in music was obtained at the University of North Florida. Hannah's teaching style is fun, challenging, encouraging, and devoted to developing healthy and efficient singing habits, regardless of genre.

Want to learn classical voice technique? I teach a curriculum that focuses on healthy breathing, purity of vowels, and freedom of tone that is great for beginner and intermediate singers of all ages! I believe in the joy of music, and would love to help you explore your unique instrument. I can also teach the basics of music theory, sight reading, and piano skills.

About Rebekah
I am a current graduate student in vocal performance. I previously studied voice performance at Mannes College in New York. I love to perform, and was most recently seen as a soloist with Opera Maya in Mexico.

As a teacher I strive to help students produce their voices in a free and healthy manner. In addition to technique, I encourage students to explore musically and dramatically through their repertoire. Everyone has a unique sound and a unique interpretation that they bring to music. I help students tap into that in a safe and fun environment.

In addition to studying classical voice, I also studied piano for 8 years and music theory for 3 years. I try to incorporate theory and aural skills into all lessons, so that student become well-rounded musicians while building healthy vocal technique.

You provide the dots, and I'll help you connect them. A solid musical foundation can prepare you for broadway, classical, gospel, or anything else you're drawn to. I take the time to identify where my students are musically, physically, and mentally, and I help them determine and reach their own goals. I teach my students to read and understand music, but I also teach them how to continue learning and teaching themselves. Everything I do in my teaching is meant to invite joy through music.

About Eva
Eva found new life and beauty through musical study, and she hopes to help others do the same. Her classical training has helped her perform opera, musical numbers, jazz, choral music, contemporary and traditional church music, and classical solo repertoire. Eva is most interested in teaching students how to teach themselves and develop their own sense of musicality.

Eva taught voice/piano for 3 years in Durham, NC where she worked as a Choral Scholar and sang with the Durham Choral Society. During this time, she also completed a Masters degree in theology at Duke.

The feedback from my former students is unanimous: I provide a comfortable, safe space for my students to grow in their awareness of themselves and their instrument. My students gain confidence as they polish their technique, and I have coached several high school stude
nts through the audition process and on to their undergraduate music program. They report being extremely well prepared, impressing their new voices teachers with their solid technical foundation and basic repertoire knowledge. I also have experience with adult students who have said their lessons are the best part of their week, a stress reliever, and the best thing they have done for themselves.

Eva and her family recently relocated to the Northeast so her husband could pursue a Ph.D. in theological ethics at Boston College. Eva now sings with the Marsh Chapel Choir at Boston University and teaches near Cumberland, RI.

Singing Basics: Exercises for Vocal Agility
Feats of vocal agility can be breathtaking – listening to singers who can pull off the most extraordinary vocal acrobatics in any genre is thrilling, and the likes of Joyce DiDonato and Cecilia Bartoli fill concert halls and opera houses all over the world with their technical fireworks. However, there are several things that you as a singer should be looking for in terms of singing basics when training your own voice – listening to recordings may make you think that a similar level of agility
How to Scream Sing Without Hurting Your Vocal Cords
Do you love metal, punk, or "screamo" music? As a vocalist, you'll need to take extra precautions if you're singing in these styles. Read on for tips from Austin, TX teacher Gfire M...   I live in Austin, Texas, the “live music capital of the world,” so I have worked with loads of vocalists who sing in touring rock bands. Some of these students only have one section of a song in which they scream -- others scream for an entire set -- so I work with them to not hurt their vocal cords.
Proper Singing Posture - What You Need to Know
Before you learn how to breathe, sing, or play any kind of instrument correctly, you need to ensure that you're creating the proper posture with your body. New singers frequently make the mistake of thinking that singing starts with controlling the vocal cords – those hard-working vocal folds we love to exhaust – but the secret to great singing is understanding how to use your whole body effectively. This starts with proper singing posture, enhanced by correct breathing techniques, and then furt
