REACTIONS TO FIRST LESSONS...

"Amazing! Simply amazing! I've taken lessons before, but none have ever stood out as much as this first one... Can't wait for the next one!"
- Nestor C. online from Texas (R&B)

"I’ve been singing all my life and I never met such an amazing coach... I learned so much in one session and I cannot wait to learn more."
- Yasmine K. in-studio (Jazz)

"Bulent worked with me - a total stranger - with great care, deep knowledge, and a gentle desire to see me improve. And this is all the FIRST LESSON... I give my highest recommendation."
- Geoff L. online from Tennessee (Pop)

"... just in one lesson I vocalized to high C with the knowledge he gave me. I actually, for the first time, knew how I did it. It was incredible. I was so happy that for the first time in years of voice training in upstate New York, 10 years in Manhattan, New York City, studying with teachers who sang at New York City Opera and the Metropolitan Opera, and not one of them was able to teach me what Bulent taught me in one lesson..."

I was looking for a teacher who could introduce my elementary-school-age daughters to basic music fundamentals, and Bulent exceeded my expectations! He created a lesson plan that combined vocal work with piano study, and tailored it to my girls' respective ages. Both girls worked with a standard piano method book and the Concone sight-singing book, developing both their piano technique as well as their knowledge and use of solfege. In addition, Bulent helped the girls build a strong musical vocabulary (with correct pronunciation!) along with a solid understanding of rhythm and meter. As they got older, my daughters became interested in learning different instruments, and they were able to transfer so much of what they learned from Bulent to their new studies. Bulent nurtured an appreciation and understanding of music that will stay with my girls throughout their lives, no matter what they choose to do. We were very lucky to find him!

In my very first lesson Bulent draft the anatomy of body to explain me how human body works as an instrument, no one didn’t really explain the functions of each part of this instrument so thoroughly, he opened my eyes of how to treat and use my body to create better voice experience. He also has different exercises focusing on different purposes, whether to sustain your air flow, or to correct your enunciation have better control on harder pitches and extra... I feel his class is all in all scientific. He finds where my problem is when practicing, and after his explanation I could already feel my performance was getting better. He’s very friendly and encouraging, the class is serious yet relaxing, we often end up laughing (usually I started it) when doing new exercises. I recommend going to him if you are looking for a vocal trainer.

"Amazing! Simply amazing! I've taken lessons before, but none have ever stood out as much as this first one. Over the last 2 years I've built up bad habits that have left my voice strained after singing just one song, but with Bulent's guidance and knowledge, I was able to immediately feel the difference in my vocal stamina and range. Furthermore, Bulent emphasized the importance of proper breath control with simple but effective techniques - something that I essentially lacked. It was overall a wonderful experience!! Can't wait for the next one!" - Nestor C

Each lesson includes studies of fundamental techniques, ear training, and music history in order to facilitate the development of a whole musician.

About Stephanie
Hello, and thank you for your interest!

My name is Stephanie, I am a teaching-artist from El Paso, Texas. I currently reside, perform and teach in the Boston and greater Boston area.

I am a recent graduate of The New England Conservatory of Music with my Masters in Saxophone Performance. I received my Bacherlors in Music Education from New Mexico State University.

“A teaching artist, by definition, is a two-career professional: a working artist and a working educator. As a working artist is they are involved in an ongoing process of discovery, problem solving, discipline and refinement of skills in their discipline. As a working educator, it is essential that the artist is also developing a knowledge base and skills to be an effective partner in education. Achieving a meaningful balance between these two professions, whereby one
feeds the other, is an ongoing process that requires a deepening awareness for the teaching artist of what their teaching brings to their art and what their art teaches them about learning.”

I am devoted and dedicated to helping find each of my students strengths, weaknesses and style of learning. Once I have identified these traits, I am able to develop lessons and repertoire that helps each students become the most efficient learner and best musician they can be.

I pride myself in creating a fun and safe learning environment in which I establish a firm musical foundation for my students. Lessons include: scales, etudes, articulation, dynamic and sight reading exercises, standard saxophone repertoire, recording and analyzing performances, saxophone/music history lessons, and exploration of the sounds, genres and artists of the saxophone.

Simultaneously, my students cultivate many other skills while learning how to play saxophone. Students enhance their fine motor skills and ability to memorize, students increase their overall self-confidence and become self-sufficient and creative problem solvers. I am passionate about educating and empowering my students and I enjoy connecting with a wide array of musicians of all ages, playing levels and backgrounds.

Feel free to contact me to inquire about lessons, I hope to hear from you soon!

Stephanie is a patient, knowledgeable, enthusiastic educator and collaborator who loves to perform and teach. I had the honor of working with her for nearly four years while we pursued similar degrees at New Mexico State University. She consistently brought a level of maturity and preparedness beyond her age to our rehearsals and practices. If I was limited to only one word to describe her, it would be "professional".

Some press:

Phil's compositions showcase a variety of ideas and are quite effective at setting up the soloists to explore the various permutations suggested by his tunes. His compositional originality is matched by his incisive playing which ranges from "inside" lyricism to hard edged, riff based, screaming rock and satisfying surreal textures aided by his intelligent use of electronics."
- David Kane, Cadence Music

"With demonstrative technique, Phil is cognizant of the tradition but thinks outside of the box."

Although I'm not technically a student of Phil's, I learn a lot from him every time I play and teach with him. We perform regularly at Berklee, where I'm a professor, and we give concerts and masterclasses all over the Northeast together (most recent was at Cornell). Phil's a warmhearted, patient, brilliant teacher and an outstanding and creative musician, seamlessly putting together everything he knows--jazz, shredding, classical--there's no boundaries for him! He's great at explaining things, and he never belittles a question, no matter how dumb you might have thought it was. Phil's a great friend and a great teacher. -John Funkhouser, Berklee College of Music, Boston

In addition to being the most talented guitarist and musician I have ever had the opportunity to play with, Phil is an astoundingly good teacher. I've played guitar for 8 years and taken private lessons the entire time. Phil has been my teacher for the past 2 years and in that time I have progressed as a musician more than I could have ever imagined. Phil has been the biggest factor in my decision to major in music, due to his unrivaled musical talent, his kind, unassuming, (and funny) demeanor and his seemingly limitless knowledge of the fretboard. He is well versed in so many genres of music, and has such an effortless grasp on improvisation. Any guitarist, from immediate beginners to seasoned professionals, can learn so much from Phil. Experienced teacher, pianist, and composer with two music master's degrees (composition from the Guildhall School of Music and jazz performance from the New England Conservatory). I teach all ages and levels in classical piano, improvisation, composition, songwriting, and music theory. I have a flexible schedule and want to make sure our time fits your needs.

About Phillip
I think we live in a great time to be making music as more and more genre-bending art takes center stage. My lessons reflect this. I have extensive training in classical music and jazz as a performer, composer, and improviser. I want to give lessons that are exciting to you, but also bring in new perspectives from overlapping musical practices. For example, I will create graphic-score compositions with your seven-year-old beginner piano student, I will improvise with a high school aged composition student, and I will assign some classical repertoire to an adult jazz student. I will always teach with the aim of providing technical knowledge in service of your artistic goals, as my own best mentors have done.

My own studies have taken me from Harvard (BA in English, where I also studied with jazz pianist Vijay Iyer) to London (Master's in
Composition from The Guildhall School of Music) and back to Boston (Master's in Jazz Performance from The New England Conservatory). I play in a number of bands that play improvised music. I also have many composition projects and extensive training in classical piano repertoire. I split my time between the scenes in New York and Boston.

I hope I can be of use to you to teach classical piano, improvisation, music theory, songwriting, composition, or jazz vocabulary!
